This might just be my imagination, but does anyone else a vaguely human-like face in this tree from the Fallow Mire? There are actually four of them. I found another of these trees once in the Hissing Wastes, so it may be linked to the thinning of the Veil in these zones.

I saw one of them too. Had no idea, there were four in the Fallow Mire. My first thought was 'The North remembers'

It may be a face. There are still meant to be traces of the old animist worship around Thedas and of course it is near enough to the Avvar for them to have made them as well. Uvolla who accepts living sacrifice was associated originally with the Wending Wood but presumably is still acknowledged. Someone had set up old idols to animist gods in the same area. However, it could have something to do with the elves. The constellation Fervanis the Oak Tree is associated with Andruil (also a goddess of sacrifice apparently) and in WoT p.120 there is a picture of a face in a tree just above the information on the elven pantheon.
So if you are seeing faces in trees, it could be a deliberate choice by the design team.

Is that tree telling you to listen with your heart?

I thought they were just skulls for an effect to make the mire creepier.

The first one is very clear to me, not so much with the others. It could be intentional, but it could also not be. Humans can see faces in chairs and things -- Jesus in a grilled cheese sandwich and whatnot. Because it's not an uncommon phenomenon, that other people see them as well doen't necessarily mean anything. Thanks for pointing this out, though. I'll definitely have to look for them the next time I play.

Wow I had no idea those trees existed!
I am guessing that they are the remnants of what the ancient Elvhen did? In World of Thedas book has a tree with a face in one of its art work in when talking about elves.
I wonder if it has to do with Mythal? Or maybe Forest Spirits?
After digging up on it there's only 1 (so far) codex entry that talks about faces imprints on trees:
According to Dalish lore, a spirit punished a clan for cutting a tree (that was host of a spirit?) in Brecilian Forest.

I made another visit to the tree to see if I could learn more about painting with the Colours of the Wind and I found two more “faces” on top of the four faces I spotted earlier, I found two more.
