Media links are blocked - did anybody post the "I'm attacking the darkness" D&D parody yet?
I had a few friends who were into it in middle and high school in the early '90s. I never really tried it myself. Not that I'd have been opposed, I just didn't get around to it. I don't recall it being a particularly big deal in the sense of anyone thinking it was dangerous or evil, though, and my friends and I were already regarded as nerds and weirdoes for plenty of other reasons.
I vaguely recall a story from when I was younger, maybe mid to late 80s, that involved something along the lines of kids LARPing and actually injuring or killing somebody in the process. I have no idea if that's what actually happened or if it was just one of those erroneous rumors that took off somehow.

I didn't get into P&P RPGs until several years after high school, but I can remember some of the panic surrounding D&D and how it somehow translated into satanic worship. Like any hysteria it was based on people who didn't know what they were talking about acting as 'experts' of the subject in question.
My first major campaigns I played were in D&D, as I assume most everyone has dabbled in at some point, I was a halfling thief by the name of Snevil Broadfoot. Though I have to say, that as I developed my roleplaying palette, I found settings like Warhammer Fantasy to be much more varied and interesting than D&D for sword and sorcery games.

I read your post, and I get this: 1) an enigmatic comment that has nothing to do with the thread, and displays potentially somebody too lazy for words, or someone missing balls for words 2) a weak attempt at a triggering, with again someone who has nothing to do with this thread and with a topic that has nothing to do with the topic. Great post.

-------------------- The Radical Freedom of Dungeons & DragonsYou might not recognize the name Gary Gygax. But even if you've never rolled a critical fail on a d20, you have almost certainly consumed some movie, TV show, book, comic, computer game, or music influenced by Gygax's most famous creation: Dungeons & Dragons, the world's first and most popular role-playing game. Joanna AndreassonJoanna AndreassonThe FBI certainly knew who he was. Between 1980 and 1995, agents compiled a dossier on the gaming company TSR Inc. and Gygax, its founder. In 1980, a note on TSR stationary about an assassination plot drew the FBI's attention, leading to a search of the company's offices in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The note turned out to be materials for an upcoming espionage game. In 1983, an FBI field report about an investigation into a cocaine trafficking ring in Lake Geneva cryptically references Gygax—but whatever his alleged role was, it has since been heavily redacted by the Bureau. The company appears again in FBI reports from 1995, as part of the agency's sprawling investigation into the Unabomber. The FBI was apparently looking into a possible tie between the string of then-unsolved bombings and a bitter legal dispute between TSR and a rival gaming company in Fresno, California. In an FBI field report describing the convoluted history of TSR, one source at the company describes the father of role-playing games as "eccentric and frightening," a "drug abuser" who is "known to carry a weapon and was proud of his record of personally answering any letter coming from a prisoner." He would be extremely uncooperative if the FBI tried to interview him, the source warned. The report also claims Gygax set up a Liberian holding company to avoid paying taxes and "is known to be a member of the Libertarian Party." The FBI's source could have been any number of professional and personal enemies Gygax made in the turbulent decade between the debut of Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 and his eventual ouster from the company—once one of the fastest-growing in the United States—as it foundered under mismanagement. ... --------------------

According to "Mazes and Monsters", the dangers of tabletop games and LARPing can drive even Tom Hanks insane; Yes, this is a real movie and he was in it.

The DnD = Satan thing has to be purely an American thing. My entire Advanced English class use to play instead of doing the assigned period work .....never leave nerds alone to police themselves.

Never heard of any Satanist ties either. If there was any criticism, it was the ol' song about it being "nerdy" and "for kids". I've played a lot of backgammon in my time. A discussion could sometimes turn into a pissing contest of which type of game required the most "skill". DnD being at the lowest tier, backgammon in the middle and chess at the top was apparently the consensus...
