This thread is dedicated to people who had opinions about some subject related to Dragon Age (lore/companions/decisions/gameplay), but after time, they changed their mind on it.
I'll start with some of my moments:
1) Reaver being boring and overrated: I actually managed to love playing two-handed Reaver Warrior. It's far more risky than being Champion (I tend to get reckless sometimes and Reaver is ironically good teacher for unlearning that) and far more fun than Templar (WotH/SP gets boring soon and individually I don't find them that spectacular). Also, it's part of underrated warrior class, which leads as to...
2) Warrior class in general: I feel that warriors are often seen as walking shields and strong stupid testosterone guys and ladies who just smash things and do nothing else. Well, it's time to smash those stereotypes with warhammer while reading some good poetry! Seriously, after crafting some non-typical warrior equipment, I have more fun than with mages or (ranged) rogues. The only class that have the same thrill for me as Reaver is dual-wielding Rogue.
3) Vivienne the bitch: She can be still a bitch, but now I kinda see her as Phillipa Eilhart of DA with redeeming qualities. She might just follow her interest most of the time (hell, this is probably why I liked her from the start - I can always predict she's probably going to do whatever gains her more influence), but you can see she cares about people you work with. She's one of the few companions who approves of saving people in Haven (they are easily replacable, yet she approves of this "waste of time"). She's one of the few to actually ask you how you feel after first encounter with Corypheus. While it's quite vitriolic friendship, she seems to respect Dorian and his privacy and she protects his reputation when his activities are questioned. Also, it would be boring to be surrounded by "oh, we have exactly same opinions and we're awesome! Let's change the world together"-type-of-company the whole time.
4) Zevran the sexual maniac: I liked Zevran from the start, but some 7 years ago, I wasn't able to appreciate some of his depths - he was just a horny bisexual. Now I'm regretting you can't get him before completing at least one main quest after Lothering - he's very perceptive, he has an interesing comment about almost every interaction with any NPC and getting under his skin is really rewarding.
5) Parry (dual-wielding ability in Inquisition): Alright, stop laughing. It's not as effective as warrior's block and slash and many people would argue it's just a waste of ability slot, but there's something strangely satisfying about wrecking a guy with big sword to the ground with a pair of tiny daggers. Also, I love duels.

Also, I love duels. 1. Reaver is fun! Reaver/berserker (DA2) is a crazy kamikaze: deadly and dead... 4. Zevran's great. His romance arc shows, how deep is his love. Yes, sometimes he's annoying with his flirty behaviour, but this is just the cover. Many people don't see, that his life was not really better than Fenris' life.
I love the second (third) chance. 1. At first sight (and second...) I didn't like Fenris, I found him annoying. But I started to bring him everywhere and romance him. His romance also great, and he's not so narrow-minded, as I thought, he's smart and an entertaining companion. 2. The Iron Bull. I still can't find an excuse for his acts, but I like him as a companion, and like his cameo in DAI. But I tried and failed to like Vivienne (I can't bear her manners) and I still find Sera annoying.

davesin I completely agree about Zevran and Vivienne, also I loved them from the start. BTW: If you play on pc, there is a mod, that lets you get Zevran as soon, as you leave camp after Lothering: just look for Zevran ASAP at Nexus. A must have mod for me, since Zev is the only companion, whos romance I like - for exactly the debth later on, you mentioned. As for me, I have a few: - I was determined to hate Iron Bull, from the descriptions, I thought him to be a cliché, but I end up loving him and he has become a favorite of mine alongside Zevran, Varric and Isabella. - Fenris: same as Catilina . Hated him at first (he looked like a manga character and I don't like mangas), but on one playthrough, I took him with me more often and I did his romance for some reason and now I really love him. He has a very sarcastic humour, which suits me fine and he he has debths too. - Anders: I loved him at the beginning and romanced him in my first three or four playthroughs constantly, but I changed my opinion about him. I still find him an interesting character, but he annoys the hell out of me in act 3 (even without the big boom) and I really hate his comments about Avelines late husband Wesley, they are cruel stupid and totally out of character for Anders and Justice. Both of them have manners, so this dialogue always rubs me wrong. - Cullen: I hated him in DAO and DA2 and was determined to continue hating him, but he really came around in DAI and became an interesting character (I even did the romance once) - Solas: other way around: I started liking him, he is after all the Spock of Thedas plus trickster god - what can go wrong with that? But I did the romance and never finished that playthrough, I found it meaningless and boring. And I have the same issues with Solas than with Anders: he seems mostly be a polite and considerate guy, but sometimes, he is so full of shit and predjudices, it hurts: just play a dwarven inqui and hear what Solas has to complain about your race constantly. He loves my little Lia Cadash and tells her, she is the one exception of her kind, because dwarves are unimaginative and lack willpower and resourcefulness. Yeah right, that is the reason, they do so well in a potential life threatening environment and that's the reason, they managed to build machines and golems, because they are so unimaginative and have no resourcefulness. Since that dialogue, I basically think Solas is an ass and he should be stopped. I still like the guy sometimes, but I had similar dialogue about other races with him before: it's no secret, he has beef with the Dalish, he has some not so nice things to say about humans in general and probably Qunari too. He seems to constantly generalise everything, which is remarkable stupid and - to be frank - racist from an old being like him. ANd on the other hand, he tells the inqui stories about heroic dwarves, selfless humans, rebellious Qunari and so on, so he should know, that there a good and bad people in every race/culture - I never played humans in DA games (apart from Hawke of course and I love my Hawkes) until half a year ago, when I started making human protagonists in DAO and DAI and I love them too. Maybe some day, I will get myself to play QUnari and will like them too. Inara and Liora Trevelyan, Lyra Cousland, Lia Aisling (commoner origin in DAO - a mod) and Alighiera Amell are now as beloved to me as my dwarves and elves - I never was a big fan of knight enchanter, until one day, I made my mage Riya Lavellan one and really started to love it

For me it was Elves. At first I couldn't stand them, in Dragon Age and Fantasy in general. But after several years, and a more in depth look in to their lore, inspirations and history I've fallen in love with them. But I like that they are just as flawed and prone to errors as humans, the main difference is that because of all their 'superior traits' their **** ups always have a bigger impact on the world than any human one. Dragon Age was a big motivating factor for changing my perspective on Elves, so that would be my face-heel-turn.

the only thing i can remember now that has changed is the dark ritual, thought could be a salvation or escape, but then looking more in the lore and through the years in the series, changed my point of view and the dark ritual it's just cowardice foul act, a grey warden will and must always do the ultimate sacrifice, plus your gambling with the fate of the world and who knew at the moment what could happen if it worked. And now it only serves to empower that bland character the egghead is, so no, dark ritual is bad and a foul thing to do, disgusting.

Let's see..
I was mostly just confused about Fenris' moodiness my first PT. Couldn't figure out his romance. My 2nd PT with him, it wasn't until Act3 that it finally clicked how awesome he was, as I'd slept with him then bounced to Anders. And the jealousy dialogue changed my perception. Romanced him my 3rd PT, and now he's my favorite LI.
Opposite for Anders. I was sympathetic and supportive and loved him my first game. My second two games involved making him as miserable as possible. After getting that out of my system, I feel very meh about him, if not very irritated by his trying to OWN Hawke.
I thought Leliana was boring in DAO. Then I was quite mad at her in DAI. And the more I play DAI, the more I want to murder Lel. Or, at least, damn her to miss out on saving Fereldan from the 5th Blight by not entering the Tavern.
The more I play DAO, the more I think we should let Eamon die. Sten has the right idea of it to challenge a Warden for getting a dead woman's ashes to save ONE MAN considering the entire villages dying while you make the trek from the Darkspawn.
I think An Inquisitor Loyal Iron Bull telling the Qun that he will no longer follow them in Trespasser is a super warm moment that makes IB worth hanging out with for at least one game. Beforehand, I thought he was pretty meh.

Oh yeah. My first three games, I thought Cassandra was awesome. I looked up to her.
Then I put her in my party and romanced her. She is an elitist hypocrite who lies to your face about being okay with your differing religion. I dislike her now.

I liked Varric well enough. I was fond of him in 2. In DAI, he's just ok. I'm ready to not see him anymore in future games.
But at first I thought it was awesome he was in DAI.

Sera. I thought I was going to love her: a normal somebody who really cares for the little people. But then it turns out her definition of 'little people' is not that extensive. Elven? Well unless they are an city elf, she doesn't care. Not Andrastian? Sera thinks its demons, and that it needs to be put down and/or destroyed. Are they a mage? They're scary, so they should be put back in Circles preferably.
That's not to say that these opinions are totally unfounded, but her reasoning for it seems to be just general hearsay, and no matter the circumstances or the evidence pointing otherwise, she doesn't seem willing to even think critically about her own views. I'm not even saying she has to change her mind completely, but even Vivienne has put more thought into why she believes these things, and is willing to engage in thoughtful conversation with the protagonist on the subject. And while I know she is not the leader of it or anything, I still have qualms about how her "friends" do things....particularly when they murder someone.
So much for being for the 'little people'....

After DA2 and the Dawn of the Seeker movie, I thought that I was not going to like Cassandra at all in DA:I, but she's now one of my favourites.
I liked Leliana in DA:O, but I became indifferent toward her by the end of DA:I. I don't need to see her.
I felt sorry for the elves in general, but now I only feel sorry for the city elves since they're just living their lives, but are discriminated against both humans and (depending on clan) Dalish elves.
The Dalish elves are very fragmented. I would say inconsistent based on what we knew from DAO and 2, but I guess they want us to know that each clan varies significantly on how they deal with stuff.
Red Jennies. I thought they would be this mysterious order dabbling many different things .... then we got Sera as their representative.
Now that it's been years since DA:I ended, I can say that the execution of the story/plot we not that great compared to DA:O and 2.

I never took him anywhere because he seemed so antagonistic. I gave him a second chance and fell for him... He is now one of my all time favorite companions as well as love interest in DA. DA2 in general was something I didn't appreciate until my second PT. I remember thinking meh after my first PT and set it aside for years. I picked it back up again, discovered sarcastic Hawke and Fenris and have played the game probably 10 times now. I also felt the same about Iron Bull. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up enjoying his romance.

First, I had to look up "face-heel turn." Never heard that phrase before. Now I'm more educated, thanks for that! Second, so many to choose from. Some didn't turn until multiple play throughs later. But off the top of my head: - Artificer: I thought it was a dumb specialization. Then I actually tried it after min/maxers I respect sang its praises, and for me it's now the hands-down sustained DPS winner of all builds.
- In Hushed Whispers: I hate time travel MacGuffins and avoided that choice for several consecutive play throughs. But I tried it again recently AFTER playing Trespasser, and that kind of gave things a new light -- particularly since I planned for Solas to be in my party, so he could be corrupted by red lyrium and left to die, muhwaahhahahahhaha. REVENGE!
- Mark of the Rift vs. Dragons: It seemed lame as an ultra, Thousand Cuts (particularly in the ealry days, when you could spam it) was way better. But then I saw a vid of how an Assassin Inquisitor can use Mark of the Rift to lock a dragon down while you pour in damage, and then trigger Mark of Death -- wham, 5 to 6 digits of damage!
- Blackwall: eeewww! Super creepy beardy pervert. That was my first impression. It didn't help that he stalks Josephine if you spurn his advances. But then I added a no-beard Blackwall mod and got a chance to do his romance with a dwarf Inky and, to my surprise, it was pretty good.
- Non-paused combat: I used to use Tactical and Pausing pretty much second by second during combat for the first few runs. But then on the advice of folks in the forum, I remapped the Pause button so I wouldn't muscle memory it and ran combat full real time with no pausing, and enjoyed it! It takes a bit of a mental gameplay shift, but once I made the transition, I found I prefer it.
- Dual-Wield Rogue: Horrible Twin Fangs target lock, so many attacks into thin air instead of the monster beating on me, just endless frustration with combat mechanics. Gave it up and only played Archer rogues for several runs, but then saw a vid showing how to play a DW Assassin properly (by the same guy as the Mark of the Rift above), and now I love it. Twin Fangs targeting still sucks, but I know which target types to avoid now (anything a little larger than man-sized, but not dragon sized, with four legs) and DW is a lot of fun.

Thought Fenris will be the most incredible romance ever, could not wait to romance him on the 2nd PT. And... so meh.The whole build up really leads to nothing much and ends really fast & the dialogues just did not live up to my hype.

As has been mentioned above, I really disliked Vivienne at first but started to appreciate her as time went on. I even made her Divine in my latest playthrough.
I also came to appreciate Sera, who I just found obnoxious at first. There are still some things about her I'm not fond of, but overall I enjoy her as a character.
Cassandra used to be my favorite warrior for the party but that changed to Iron Bull, just for the hilarious banter.
I didn't care about Cullen in DAO or DA2, never could understand how people could ship him with someone. Then DAI happened.
Blackwall romance: I thought it would be right up my alley, but I played it through to completion and...nothing. It just didn't work for me.
WEWH: I used to let Celene live and reunite with Briala, until I read The Masked Empire and learned the full extent of what she's done for the Game. Now I'm happy to see her assassinated and Briala ruling.

1) At first I had no interest shipping The Warden with Morrigan at all and only picked Leliana as my OTP. Now I find her dull and boring and meh and I pick Morrigan as much more interesting and thematic. Still is. Maybe it has something to do with defrosting an ice queen.
2) At first I liked a Dwarf protagonist. Now I'm fucking bored with the idea of playing one now. DAI contributed to this.
3) At first I was interested and excited about Orlais. Now I find it stereotypically boring.

I also came to appreciate Sera, who I just found obnoxious at first. There are still some things about her I'm not fond of, but overall I enjoy her as a character. Oh, yes, Sera. I simply told her to get lost on the first attempt at the PT because she came across as awful. The second time I had to take her in the party lacking other rogues, and played a full game with her. I managed okay till she started playing those pranks in the end of the game, and, finally, did another 180 in the epilogue when I hated her with a passion for that god-awful slide with red jenny and the inquisitor.

I've been all over the place with Blackwall. At first I loved his aura of gruff nobility, but obviously I couldn't quite see him in the same light after he turned out to be a murderer who'd been lying about everything and he came to annoy me. After Trespasser, though, I like him much more, seeing how he stopped pretending to be someone else and returned to his true identity.

I don't understand this. You only get that slide if you accept her invitation to join the Jennies. Why would you do that if you disliked her?

It’s the slide that I really disliked, and since it was linked to her, I disliked her as well. From the whole debacle of the Inquisition that rankled the most.

It's sensible to pursue the templars over the mages in DA:I. The Inquisition knows that to send the Inquisitor to Redcliffe castle would be to let them walk straight into a trap. It isn't worth the risk. And Champions of the Just is a better quest- another opinion I've come around to. I love Envy and the side quest inside the Inquisitor's mind. It was amazingly well done. It says so much about the nature of demons and the Fade and physical world in DA. The writers must be very familiar with psychoanalysis, also, because it represents the three levels of personality perfectly.
The quest starts in a basement- the ground level or id of the Inquisitor's mind where primal desires rule, and so where Envy reigns. The further from primal desire you get, the higher up you go in this structure, the less hold Envy has on you and Cole articulates that exactly. The Inquisitor then makes it to the first floor, or the level of the ego, the personality presented to others and that functions in daily life, and where Envy still has influence but not as much. The highest floor, or the level of the superego, represents the cultural teachings and morals society has instilled in you, and the most elevated structure in Therinfal Redoubt is the Chantry which, of course, rebukes Envy as sin. Envy has no power or place among people of faith, and once you cross through the Chantry's red door, Envy has no hold over the Inquisitor at all- it is exposed for what it is. It reminds me of the movie Psycho and how it made use of this levels theme. It was so well done.
The message about the darkness of one's own mind being the source of demons, that templars- just like anyone else- can be overtaken by demons, the continuity of mind and body as a theme, the mind's ability to make spirit real, along with the important role the Chantry plays in saving people from their own demons- very insightful. Loved it. And the Inquisitor gains more attribute points- a gameplay mechanic that, in my view, articulates a point about strengthening one's skills by strengthening the mind. The way to do that is to face the weaknesses of your psyche. I think this is the basis for the Rivaini and Avvar mages rituals of possession- to face their weaknesses and integrate the lesson or virtue the spirit represents. That's a very intriguing model. And also a strong counterpoint to those who say the Harrowing or similar tests are just anti-mage genocide plots. It seems you have a much higher chance of dying with what the Rivaini and Avvar mages do, and yet this is something they do of their own volition.

Loved it. And the Inquisitor gains more attribute points- a gameplay mechanic that in my view also articulates a point about strengthening one's skills by strengthening the mind, and the way to do that is to face and integrate you weakness. I think this is the basis for the Rivani mages and their rituals of possession- to face their weaknesses and integrate the lesson or virtue the spirit represents. That's a very intriguing model. And also a strong counterpoint to those who say the Harrowing or similar tests are just anti-mage genocide plots. It seems have a much higher chance of death with what the Rivani mages do, and this is something they do of their own volition. Yes, I know, this is the better quest. Sadly, there's no reason to pursue the Templars: Ser Barris refused my Inquisitor's offer and followed that dickhead (I never trusted anyone who follows the order without question), but Fiona offered her help and asked for help. And the Mages need respect, the Templars has enough. So, I'm very sorry, but I need to find an acceptable reason to ask for the Templar's help. Again. So priority: the mages, sadly the Templars died. And Meredith's and the red lyrium Templars' case showed, that the temptation is the problem, no matter mages or not, everyone can be dangerous. ___ Harrowing isn't "genocide", the Annulment is, but Harrowing in this circumstances just an unnecessary torture and a stressor. This isn't a guarantee the mage will not be possessed, even not that the Harrowed mage will resist the temptation. We know many Harrowed mage, who became an abomination, and the Circle (the Templars and the Chantry) was the main reason in many cases.

I think the one most worth mentioning is Varric. In my first playthrough, I didn't really care about him much. I neither liked nor disliked him, I just never really talked to him (neither did I care much about Viv and Blackwall, or Bull at that, but Bull I disliked from the beginning and I still hate him). However, now I totally love Varric. He is a total bro and I just wanna hug him. I think everyone needs a Varric in their life. In fact, I love Varric so much that I named my pony after him.
