I suppose it's a product of aging as well. Now that I'm approaching 40 years of life, I am gradually realizing how utterly hopeless all my weak little flailing is, how pointless all of my objections are. I now must slowly force myself to resign to the fact that the world is governed by greedy, deceptive fools. People who aspire to nothing other than the next device, the next trend, the next buzz-word. People who disregard their own instincts & their own conscience to the simple & fleeting joy of being "cool" or "cute"... This phenomena is not novel or a recent discovery to our species, but it's true profound depth is a revelation to me. My last shred of hope for humanity seems to be fraying. Can we possibly be this stupid & frivolous collectively? Do we deserve our fate? Has our own hubris and sloth doomed us to a slow, ugly demise??

Can we possibly be this stupid & frivolous collectively? Do we deserve our fate? Has our own hubris and sloth doomed us to a slow, ugly demise?? The answer to all of those questions is, "Possibly yes." But I am still a believer in the ability to do good on a small level, just in your every day life with the people around you or that you encounter. Maybe it is small and insignificant, or maybe it is a stone thrown into a pond where the ripples affect a further distance like the butterfly effect. That a few acts of kindness might spread further kindness along the way. Maybe nothing earth-shattering or soul-saving... but, still, better than nothing. I often think of a Men in Black quote where Agent Kay said, "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals." I try to help and affect a person at a time, if it seems like the right direction. I don't hold much hope in people once they are "packed up", so to speak, in a mob mentality. Like how a dog can be intelligent and obedient, but as soon as it's in a pack and they get mentally "packed up", it can be hard for the master to get them to listen and obey if they start running around causing grief. Then again, I'm 32 and probably still in a golden age of naivete. It makes my partnership with my 45-year-old rather cynical husband interesting. He grounds me, yet I sometimes give him hope.

I try to see everything in a fairly pragmatic point of view. Once I start doing that, it is easier for me to enjoy life.

Now that you've recognized the awful truth of it all, move on to the next phase, it is really fruitless and frustrating!
Think about how you can stick it to the man, in a meaningful way, without being killed before accomplishing your goal. That's where I've been for a while now.
Sticking it to the man in a meaningful way - pretty much impossible.

Existence and everything surrounding it is entirely without meaning or value and everything happens exactly as intended. There is nothing more to it.

The internet isnt anything like real life Like... for example. I wonder how many people here wouldnt be as vocal as they are online and instead would be quieter and more socially anxious. It applies to me, Im a really awkward and quiet person It isnt that online-me isnt ME. Its me, but when I dont have to use words and type instead. So I can say things I wouldnt usually say because theres no real social conventions or anxiety about posting (most of the time) so I can just type everything my brain thinks. Like now. There are also internet phenomena where things apparently exist on the internet where they just dont in reality. AND in reality if you have a normal life, youll probably be speaking to and meeting lots of new people all of the time, even just at work. Which is good. Not REALLY true on most of the internet, on forums even though people will leave/arrive, most of the time you speak to the same people in the same threads. On social media you only talk to friends. You kinda keep with groups and you dont get the same level of people flowing through your life, and thats BAD. Partly because the more you stay in a group, the higher the chances of there being divisions IN the group, and partly because the more you stay in 1 group, the more resentful of people outside of it you are. Which is why its important to have people floating in and out of your life and internet life. Difference is important! Its why you see people who group up either in reality or online being a million times worse than the people who dont, intermingling and mixing together makes you a nicer person and you cant do that often online because of specific threads, communities or friendship groups, its a more enclosed system, which means a higher chance of people being... idk bad towards others or something

People talk about leaving a legacy behind, but in reality, nothing really matters to me when my life is over. So I just focus on enjoying life and being present.

Well, its not just you who is insignificant, everything is equally insignificant - or rather, importance does not exist at all. I would have loved to have a real important purpose though, I imagine that would be the best thing ever. Guess thats why so many people rely on religion, it gives your a purpose, importance and a mission.

I'm 26 and I came to this same conclusion around... three years ago? Yep, people are fucked in the head. They're stupid, dumb pieces of shit and while they claim to have freedom of individuality, they are in reality part of a retarded hive. With the invention of the internet and advances in technology (most notably computers, tablets and phones etc) coupled with social media, this is more noticeable now, as it's hard to go anywhere on the internet without reading idiots self righteous monologues or troll comments. In truth, the human race has always engaged in the sheep mentality, the internet has only magnified it. So in a way, the internet really is a true representation of society. One may argue it's only like that because of the advantage of anonymity, but what you get from troll comments and retardation is the person's true nature, their pure thoughts... which in otherwise polite company, they couldn't get away with. (Granted they aren't just trolling for the sake of getting a rise). Though in this day and age that's changing. You can link your FB account to various sites and apps... your ID isn't so private then. We may live in a "free democracy" but people have been fired from their jobs for having "unconventional" opinions via social media, but now I'm going off on another subject.

The internet is an accurate representation of society (if anything, it's more accurate than casual interactions with strangers since people can show their true power level without worrying about social norms). I'm sorry you had to find out this way, but at least you can take solace in the fact that the person responsible for the brony cum jar project probably doesn't work at the same place as you. stop talking about recon's primary habit, we all know the main reason he comes to this site is for those special teasers frosted gives him fairly regularly in the politics thread :lmfao: :lmfao: What if the INTERNET is an accurate representation of society? That is, what if there truly are legions of morons walking the streets?!? dont worry you can go back to believing the best in the world around you, besides many of those "stupid people" on the street are really quite nice natured and generally easy to talk to thee just easy to confuse, quick to anger when confused and of course prone to mob action when angry, oh and there easily lead especially if you sprinkle in a liberal helping of " free shit, stick it to the man, vive la revolution and my personal favourite, only care about the 1%" but once you understand that not all folks were ready to get on the long bus and were forced to by circumstanced beyond their control so they revert to type in the most debased ways possible you can at least give them a smile and a nod and pass along pleasantries in a fitting manner... or you can troll them hardcore like i do (in my wheelchair i randomly tilt my head sideways start start rocking animatedly and drive straight at them causing the sour faced shits to react in an alarmed manner) There are two things iconic of the BSN; Tali's sweat and Recon's alleged My Little Pony fetish.

The internet may actually be a more true representation of society than what you see in real life as because people feel they are anonymous they say and do things that they would not do in real life. eh, wouldn't go that far. We all have some part that culture keeps in check with regulations so we could function as society ( after all, we are the most aggressive species on the planet. Agent Smith has a point, to a degree). Internet works more as a mental "vent" for most people. On my end, I make a lot of dumb jokes you wouldn't catch me ever saying irl. Some bully others. Go visit any Ytube video talking about muslims. Etc, etc, etc. ( Hardcore) Gamers are actually some of the more juvenile "groups" on the net, next to politics/religion fruitcakes, etc.

What if the INTERNET is an accurate representation of society? That is, what if there truly are legions of morons walking the streets?!? Idiocracy, my friend. It was presented as hilarious satire but it's frighteningly relevant when you actually step back and look around... Vote Camacho 2020.

One worth discussing, no less here. It pertains to the discussion, I feel. Said phenomenon might have an explanation for how ideas such as 'fake news' and fake news permeate through public discourse, and determining which is actually fake news, and what's pointless fear mongering.
