Finished Inquisition earlier this year and loved it. Except the shards. Fuck the shards. Then I played DAO and while I loved the story, characters (Unhardened Alistair romance is so sweet) and tactics (seriously why didn't they leave this? The AI is DAI is horrible) it has really aged. I couldn't believe it had a silent protagonist in an RPG in 2009? Also the environments were really boring and looked like crap. It can't be the year, since something like Xenoblade came out 6 months after it, so it could have been better. Luckely it has a TONS of mods to mess around! Now I'm thinking if I should play DA2. I've heard so many bad things about it and Hawke didn't really make an impression in Inquisition. Is it really worth a shot?

Absolutely YES. Hawke much more fun than in the Inquisition (in fact, he is my personal favorite). Hawke in the Inquisiton is a burned out wo/man, who seems lost everything, and s/he blames him/herself for everything. I like him in the DAI, but probably only because I liked in the DA2, and I knew his past. Without this maybe I also would not too impressed...
So: I think DA2 is great (if you ask me: the best*) part of the DA series, but true, not perfect... it's bleeding from several wounds, logical problems, annoying things etc. But I like it. Not a heroic fantasy, rather personal story: Hawke don't save the world, Hawke just try save his/her family, and him/herself... varying degrees of success. I like the battle system: no tactical camera, but the battle is more diynamic, and if need, you can stop the battle and assign tasks. Maybe a bit annoying the random spawned enemies, but that not an unmanageable. No collectible shits, good companions, and as I see, the best romances.
I don't use mods, only for HD and repetable romance scene. DLC-s: The Legacy must have – because of Corypheus and Hawke's father, and Mark of the Assassin because of qun, and I think this is fun. The Exiled Prince... hmm, I think this is also good, but I mostly lost Sebastian at the end (bonus companion –Sebastian prince of Starkhaven–, who also romanceable, but only with femHawke, and his personal quests, and a bit more relation with Chantry).
(*But do not listen to me, I'm biased...)

100% Yes!
I'm basing it on the fact that i think Dragon Age 2 is a good game, but also, if you played the other two you might as well.
Plus, the Hero and the Inquisitor wish they were as awesome as Hawke is.

ABSOLUTELY YES.
I'll touch on what you brought up:
Story: Hawke does not save the World; it can be an emotional tragedy, but depending on if you're Pro Mage Freedom or Pro Templar, you can "win" in your own way. S/he is just trying to make their life better for themselves and family. It's a tight story, some may even call it short, but it's clean, IMO. Unless Hawke is a mage, that is where they cut a little too close to the bone and didn't quite explain things properly.
Characters: I have played all three games three times, and I have to say, I think this cast of companions is the best. They have flaws and strong opinions and, unlike Origins and Inquisition, arguing with him gets you Rivalry so that you can have a different kind of relationship with your companions instead of just: I hate you OR YOU ARE MY BEST FRIEND EVAR. Rivalry is like... "I agree to disagree on the things I find most important. But you've stuck by me, and I respect that. So let's do this, asshole." <- awesome sauce
Tactics: YAY for you, the tactics setup is the same as DAO, so you'll be happy with that. One flaw: Due to a small budget, you can't change what your characters look like with armor changes. You CAN change their weapon and shield, and "upgrade" their armor/clothes. It's not really that annoying, I've only ever cared what MY character looked like, not my companions very much.
The protaganist is voiced! Sarcastic Hawke is friggen hilarious, by the way! And depending on how you act, you get different access to different dialogue. If you're Diplomatic all the time, you can talk people out of things peacefully. If you're Direct/Aggressive all the time, you can ...GOAD or threaten people into doing what you want. I can't remember if Sarcastic Hawke gets you special Dialogue, but being Sarcastic is it's own reward, so it's okay with me!
Environments: Better than Origins, but not by much. Small budget. Also, the biggest flaw is reused maps. I've gotten frustrated from it, the first time, but I'm not a huge fan of MMO worlds, and don't mind it as much as some people seem to. Expect it but don't let it make you rage quit. I'd rather have short repetitive maps than a huge beautiful world filled with nothing.
Also: There are 3 DLCS. Legacy is the only one I think you MUST have. MOTA is...cute. It's Qunari Lifestyle centered. Sebastian is a bit too preachy and hypocritical to like, but does have a tiny bit in it that's connected to Inquisition.

Definitely, if you can afford it. It's not a bad game, but a lot of people came to it expecting DAO2. And were riding on a hype train that was destined to crash in burning flames because the game got way to little budget and development time. Approach it like its own game, feel free to keep expectations a bit low and it's a pretty good game in my opinion. The characters are interesting, the story is different and it has a lot of good lines, especially from sarcastic Hawke. So: a yes vote from me too.

I would consider Sebastian's DLC a must due to his involvement with the end of the game. I played twice without him, didn't even know he existed the first time, decided on MOTA and Legacy for my second time, and just played recently with him. And other than the bit in the middle where Leliana visits, there is nothing about his DLC that effects the Inquisition in a significant way. I'm being ambiguous to avoid spoilers, but his big declaration at the end of DA2 is regulated to a War Table mission in DAI. Not worth the $5-8 for the DLC. In fact, due to the fact that he tries to force your hand about a major decision that already has enough weight to it, I actually resent his presence at the end.

So: all decision is good, sarcastic Hawke great. I've only romanced Anders fully with a female, but got pretty far with a male. Maybe as a first time, so you get his full back story. But I don't find it as meaningful as you do. OR, actually, I find it just as meaningful to have thought of that specific person as Anders' best friend. Since one doesn't know who they will romance going into the game, I think OP should just make a character they connect with more than shoot for any perfect access to small details. The more connected, the more FEEELS

Ok, I'll give it a try. Is there any version with all dlc added? I only find the standard one, or is it the same as Mass Effect (you have to buy separate DLC)?

I came to DAO very late in the game so I quickly learned that DA2 had a bad rep. I'm so glad I ignored that bad rep and played DA2 though because I LOVE it. I like playing it at least as much as the other two games. I play all it's DLCs and use lots of mods (just like I do for the other two games) and I know I'll be playing it again and enjoy it as much as I enjoy it every time I play it. I especially enjoy the banter and I know that's one reason I like DA2 so much.

I mean, Dragon Age Keep won't even let you say you didn't play it! You have to set up choices you don't understand if you don't play it. The Keep lets you say you never met Tallis from MOTA or Sebastian though. Supprts ny statement. But if money is no object, get em all.

I could quote pretty much every post in this thread with a big I AGREE!! I almost made the mistake you did, which is to skip DA2 due to the bad publicity, so I am glad you have decided to fix said mistake Hawke is my favorite of the three protagonists, hands down. I have a Hawke obsession, you could say. S/he is the most believable protagonist to me, just a regular person trying to survive and protect their family, when they are dragged into all sorts of bullshit that no normal person should have to experience. S/he has no special powers (even mage Hawke is "just" a normal mage), unlike the Warden and the Inquisitor. S/he gathers followers through the force of his/her personality, not because of a fancy title, or magic darkspawn blood, or a special glowy hand that is the only thing that can save the world. I agree that if you can only afford one DLC, go with Legacy, no question (and I would suggest playing it in act 3, not earlier, though I'm sure that is up for debate). However, if you have some extra money, MotA is very amusing and fun to play. Sebastian's DLC is the last one I bought. He's nice for eye candy, and you get a few extra missions, but personally I think you should make sure that one is on sale before you buy it. As I know: sadly this is separate (I don't saw Ultimate/Game of the Year etc on Origin, probably not exist): The Exiled Prince MotA LegacyIt would have had to have been Game of the Year to get a Game of the Year Edition. To be fair, even having played Legacy, I still don't see how it's Hawke's fault. OP, do NOT open the spoiler below I'm going to be a bit vague here in case OP opened the spoiler anyway. Hawke was used, badly, by people who should have known better. Hawke understandably trusted those people to know how to fix the situation, and unknowingly made things work, but it's not as if s/he had any other choice at that point anyway. I can see how Hawke would feel partially responsible for fixing what happened, but fault is another matter entirely.

Will also be ambiguous. You go to investigate attacks, and then you are literally trapped and can't get out. So, applying reality... you either dehydrate to death to avoid the big bad that you don't even fully understand, or you have to release it to release you and your loyal friends.
What normal person would choose death?
So, I agree it's still not really Hawke's fault, except in the literal sense. I laugh at Varric's speech in DAI. "A dead body full of holes, how could it have been deader?! Dead!"

I guess the Writers just wanted to give a burning reason why Hawke would bother to show up, so they had to have Hawke say lines to support it. Then they wanted you to sacrifice Hawke in the Fade. If you didn't they dropped the ball... because suddenly, that burning responsibility for Cory turns into, "I need to go baby sit the Wardens because Leliana won't lend me a Crow." High five for the Hawke love, we're way off topic. Hahaha.

Oh yeah, to the OP. There is a strong argument that the Hawke in Inquisition has dialogue about Blood Magic that doesn't represent how your Hawke may think in DA2. For example, Hawke can BE a blood mage, even enter a relationship with a Blood mage, and then Hawke seems to has nothing but hate for Blood Mages in DAI. Other than that inconsistency, I felt like the representation was pretty spot on.
This series has mild continuity flaws, but I love it too much to care. It's the proce of allowing so much player choice.

Yes, play DA2. I liked Hawke; choose either iconic male or female Hawke the first time through. I never bother to customize Hawke. It really connects the story in Origins with that of Inquisition, especially when you do the Legacy DLC.
I, myself, played Inquisition first before backtracking and playing Origins and the DA2. There are so many references in Inquisition that don't make sense if you don't do the other two games as well. Once you complete both Origins and DA2 and transfer the world state you created to Inquisition, everything starts to make sense. Having to choose between Stroud and Hawke has much more dramatic impact once you've played as Hawke.

But male Hawke better with Anders, and mage Hawke better for Fenris, and for story, as I see. The more connected, the more FEEELS Nothing major, but i knew entirely who i was going to romance going into the game. I always do.

I may be a bit biased towards male Hawke since all i play is male characters (Except the Inquisitor) but i have to side with those that think male Hawke pulls off the sarcasm better then female Hawke. There' been two Hawkes created in my house, one male created by me and one female created by me under my wife's supervision and we both agreed that male Hawke was better at sarcasm. I think Nicholas Boulton sounds a bit like Timothy Dalton so that helps.

Eh, depends if you like whinny characters? I mean, for Varric's sake, you should play it (he's the best!) but yeah, it's not the best game out there overall though.
