I was looking up character concept art earlier which got me thinking about this. Putting aside all thoughts of utility and whether or not something is shit tier, I love it when I can match a character's weapon to their concept art, official art, or just to their specialization or personality. Dorian gets the Staff of Violation / Corruption (the three-headed dragon one... that's also Orsino's... that Solas also has in one cutscene lolwtf, that staff gets around nawmsayin 😎) or one of the numerous skull-topped ones due to his necromancy. Morrigan and Solas get woodsy, apostate-y looking staves (gnarled wood, trinkets hanging off of it), Circle mages like Wynne and Vivienne get streamlined steel with a glowly crystal on top or something with Andraste, and I like Hawke with the Staff of Parlathan. Not just talking about mages, btw. That's just what I happened to be looking up. I like Fenris with his Blade of Mercy and I feel weird making Sera wield a Dalish bow.

It's pretty late in the overall story, but when I get the Fade-Touched Honeycomb in Trespasser, I always give it to Sera. That way, every time she attacks with her brand-new lyrium bow, she inflicts bees. (I've also used it with her armor, which is just as fun.)

Generally, yes. I never made Varric a dagger rogue or something like that.

Yep. I generally just make or give them upgraded versions of whatever they start the game off with, or whatever they have on in the promo shots. Same appearance and type, but just with a higher level schematic and higher tier crafting materials. I also like to take any banter or mention of an upgrade or preference (ie. Bull saying he'd like a dawnstone weapon) into consideration. I do this for armor as well.
Of course, I generally play on normal, so there's room for "aesthetic over practicality", roleplaying rather than needing everyone to be in the best gear all the time.

I like to give them something vaguely appropriate, so Cassandra got the Templar armour instead of Blackwall. I tried dressing Dorian in the Sentinel Plate and had to switch him to something else as he looked so ridiculous.
That said, there came a stage where we were all running around in Sha-Brytol armour, even poor Vivienne who I'm sure would never choose to wear such a thing.

Yes... and no. It's a combination of how I feel something fits with a character and whether I personally like it, or not, and also whether it's actually available for my use. I can't give Dorian the Staff of Corruption because you need to have sided with the templars to get it from Calpernia, which I don't do. There is a craftable one, with the recipe available from the Black Emporium, but truth be told, I just don't care for it. I also think the other skull staff available in the game is just hideous, so I just can't go with that. I do craft the Magister Staff for him early on in the game, and he's able to use that for quite a long while before I have to replace it. However, I do prefer to keep both Morrigan and Solas with the more rustic looking staves, just as you suggest. I also do like Fenris with the Sword of Mercy for that exact reason; even if I were to have a dual-wielder PC, I would still gift him that sword as it wouldn't seem right for me to use it. I keep all of my tanks, including my PC, with a sword (and shield), as I prefer the appearance of swords and that seems more fitting with all of the tank characters we've had thus far -- Alistair, Justice, Avaline, Blackwall, Cassandra; the sword all seems right for them. I also never spec a character out of their role or weapon preference; it would feel weird to me.

Yep, I've been known to struggle along with under leveled gear for longer than necessary, for role playing reasons... and this includes my own PC. I like to gear and skill them up in ways that reflect their character/personality, as much as possible. It can be challenging and kind of like a mini game in of itself.

That way my character can wear that lvl 6-looking armor piece while it has stats for gear appropriate to their level.

Ahh, yeah I do love using mods for this reason in the older bio games, but modding DAI was such a pain in the early days when it came out, I just did several playthroughs vanilla. I was glad when they added the ability to dye crafted armor, and made the patterns easier to get and save with the golden nug.

I don't pay it much attention unless it's horribly immersion breaking (Grey Warden armor on Solas lol).

Some playthroughs I will pay more attention to picking gear that would best suit their characters, but more often than not I'll take the pragmatic route. (Unless they piss me off, then it's The Armor of Shame for you. ) But it's for reasons like this that it'd be nice to see a crafting system which divorced stats from appearance.

Yeah, I do that. Everybody gets the upgraded version of what they were equipped with at the start. And Vivienne always gets a staff that uses Fade Touched Wyvern Scales so that her staff casts 'Fear on Hit'. But it's for reasons like this that It'd be nice to see a crafting system which divorced stats from appearance. I agree. I think they should keep the current crafting system, but change the stats on items to be based solely on the tier of materials you use instead of the schematic having a level.

(Unless they piss me off, then it's The Armor of Shame for you. ) But it's for reasons like this that it'd be nice to see a crafting system which divorced stats from appearance. So much this! When I heard about the ME:A crafting system, with augments and whatnot, I really hoped this would be the case. With weapons, it KINDA does, since a full auto Valkyrie is EXACTLY what I've always pictured Shepard using, and I was happy as hell once that got fixed and my Ryders got to use 'em. But alas, 'twas not the case with armor. I mean, you could certainly do alot to customize your gear, putting a good bit of the bonuses you wanted on gear that looked good, but sometimes I always felt like the inherent stats of the armor were wasted on some builds. As far as DA goes, to some degree yes, I try to pick weapons the characters would realistically use. Which means, unfortunately, in DA:I no swords for the warriors. Period. ALL DA games have been HORRIBLE with sword scale. Warriors wield the equivalent of swords that would historically only be wielded in two hands...as if they were arming swords. And the hilts are incredibly off scale as well. In DA:I, take the default daggers you start as a Rogue, lengthen the blade by a hair, and shorten the hilt to fit one hand....that's what a sword and shield warrior would carry, not something almost as tall as they are. At least in DA:I, one handed axes and maces tend to be better scaled, so there ya go. May not fit them thematically, compared to promo material and whatnot, but I like to keep a little bit of realism in my fantasy, thanks.

I am glad it's not just me. Every time I take Viv out, I try to put her in the ugliest, frumpiest piece of armor I can find. And then tint it so it clashes. I do try to choose weapons that would be realistic to each character while trying to give them the weapon that suits my needs in combat. It's fun sometimes to give them weapons that seem all wrong for them. Maybe by the 5th or 6th PT just go crazy.

Generally, yes. For example, I don't like giving anyone Grey Warden armor but Blackwall. And if I don't have him join their ranks, then not even him.
But if it's early in the game and I'm strapped for resources, I'm not going to be a purist about it.

When I craft armor Sera usually gets plaideweave somewhere in her armor. Except my last game. She had to have reds and oranges in her color, being a soldier of the light. And Blackwall gets Warden related gear.

Sometimes I take it one step further and name the weapon something I think the character or Dagna would come up with Same! Sera's bow is ALWAYS some variant of "Aimin' to Miss-behave" or "Mis B. Hayve." Or something otherwise trite and stupid, but it's all good, innit? If I'm playing a DW rogue, any dual blade dagger pair is called Slicer/Dicer, and regular daggers are Stabby/Stabbity.... Hell, one time I made Sera an armor set and tinted it with the blue velvety material (can't think of the name off the top of my head). It looked so Austin Powers chic I HAD to call it "Oh, bee-HAVE." 'Cause, yanno, bees, and what he says in the movies... Yeah, I'm a little touched, yeah? To be honest, between Austin Powers and Firefly, Sera's gear never lacks for names.
