Saw it. Was okay, good, not great.
Biggest problem was it dragged at the start. I mean, I get that they have to establish the setting, but I don't think that was done very well.
Afterwards, the story really picked up.

Liked it, interesting world with orcs, elves, humans. Agree it started out slow but got much better. Will Smith great as always. Tikka reminded me of the Leeloo in the Fifth Element. Want to see a sequel but they need Noomi Rapace as Leilah it it. A sequel is already in the works.

It was ok, but honestly it had really awkward dialog and direction in a lot scenes. A cool concept but could have been executed better.

i hope they make more of these, it felt like this film was supposed to be about 4 hours long and they skipped large chunks especially in the first half (it didn't flow very well) and there appeared to be chunks missing in the second half as well although it did flow much better
overall a very enjoyable movie and i would defo watch more of them in the future even if they changed the cast (although i would hope they dont do that)

I love Will Smith as an actor. The setting, with mythical creatures in Gangsta LA, sounded like a winner. But the heavy handed, somewhat awkward plot seemed flat. And such a silly script. The idea would make a good TV series in the right hands.
It was good to see Will Smith again.

Yes I saw this!! I'll copy/pasta a review I already made elsewhere: This may be an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked Bright! Okay, bad stuff first: The script. The dialogue was pretty bad. Normally that’s a killer right there, done and done. But… there’s more to this movie than dialogue, surprisingly. The pacing. This NEEDED to be a series, not a movie. They crammed way too much action and “stuff” into approximately two hours. The many times hot women almost kissed so as to tantalized the horny straight male sci-fi nerds. I am all for lesbian rep, especially in fantasy/sci-fi, but you know, you can tell when a scene is written for the ladies and when it’s written for the bros. It made me uncomfortable. And also had the whole “lesbians are bad, baaad girls” vibe. Straight bros make me sick, sigh. OKAY, BUT. I still really loved it! The world. THE WORLD!!! The world is really great! At first I thought it was too ham-fisted with the whole “Orcs are meant to represent black people (or people of color in general, or immigrants, or….)” See, that’s kind of where I stuttered. Because the Orcs can sort of represent quite a few groups. So it’s not the idea that’s bad; it was the script. Just bad writing. A real shame. But DAMN this world is cool!!! The characters. Our mains were okay; Jakoby was kinda goofy, and Ward was… you know, every character Will Smith ever plays. BUT THAT ELF FED AND HIS GIANT GINGER PARTNER, OMG. Can I have a mini-series with just them and their insane escapades? They are totally like best friends, right? I want to meet their families. Ginger has a wife and like ten kids, and he invites Elf Guy over for Thanksgiving every year, and tries to hook him up with one of his cousins or something, and Elf Guy is just like, ….. I mean, I would watch the shit out of that. Granted, Tikka was like basically a rip-off of the gal from Fifth Element, but I think a mini-series would have fleshed her character out more. I think the same for Ward and Jakoby. Leilah deserved more of a background as well. Anyway, I’m not saying this is great or even that you should watch it (?!) BUT if you like urban fantasy, you’ll probably enjoy it. Trust me on this one!

I honestly thought it was poor overall.
The idea and the world building is the biggest winner in the entire show, and Joel Egerton was good as Jakoby, but the rest was just...terrible honestly. It feels like a poorly written buddy cop movie where they re-purposed it with Dungeons and Dragons to give it a bit more of a selling point. You had too much ham-handedness regarding racial groups (the kind of ham-handedness you see in most fantasy modules, mind you) and it really brought the premise down because it was all based on "insert stereotype" here.
If anything, it's inspired me to take that world setting, change up some of the problematic bits, and write out a campaign/tabletop game with it. Otherwise...im not really impressed. I think it makes a better series vs a movie. Otherwise, see it once or pass on it.

That potential is the best thing the movie has. I want to see more, maybe a bit less along the lines of the standard racial tropes though. For example, the elves being in power is a good idea. How they are portrayed was terrible. Should be less overt, basically. Instead of an elves only district this side of an aparthied, why not make elven culture being dominant, elven brands, elf celebrities, all of that instead of this rich district, elven only ward. The use of brights itself was really good. I'd expand on that concept and go an arcanum route with it, forgotten magic and the more unpredictable nature, those who are more technologically apt and such not being able to use wands. That kind of stuff is good world building.

Just needs more. I hope fans hype it enough to get them to consider creating a series instead of another movie (if they even plan to do that). I mean, do all orcs live in gangs? Proooobably not. What is this whole "blooded" thing? Do orc, elven, and human children all go to the same schools? What happens if (gasp) a human falls in love with an orc? or an elf? In some ways, in trying to reflect stereotype, they created stereotype. They clearly wanted to have the orcs represent the systemic oppression of black people in this country. But then they only show orcs as living in the 'hood, having tats and piercings, and playing football. Um, news flash. Black people are also professors, astronauts, military personnel, and artists. This film just lacked nuance.

This film just lacked nuance. That was part of the problem for me. They hinted at this blooded and unblooded stuff, but the impression I got is blooded meant "true orcs" or something like that. But the "blooded" culture seemed to be severely lacking. I think a better tact would have been following a sort of biker gang mentality for "blooded" orcs. Go with the marauding "gangland" chapters where some are legit, and others are more violent and nasty in an "outlaw" sense that could benefit from a sort of "warrior code culture" they presented. Being blooded is being part of the outlaw club, which is not necessarily criminal but just against the AMA organization, for example. The "non-blooded" are the conformists in society which can lead to perhaps more nuanced tension between folks. Or at least, thats the tradition of it in present day. There are just ideas off the top of my head...but all of this i'm jotting down because it makes for a good setting.

I did notice, too, that all orcs except Jakoby have large bottom teeth; I am guessing Jakoby files his down to conform. What I would like to see is more orcs "conforming"... maybe see an orc professor or doctor or lawyer. (Though I wonder if this society is so racist that it doesn't allow orcs to pursue higher education?) So far the only professions we saw orcs engaging in were store clerks and drivers. A series as opposed to a movie could have shown Jakoby interacting with orcs from both sides of the equation. Instead all we got was hi appearing to look vaguely shame-faced that he was unblooded... whatever the fuck that meant lol

I must confess the movie felt like it's based on a book. Only the book was in the middle of an ongoing series.

I don't think orcs were supposed to represent black people specifically. They're simply supposed to be an oppressed people as a race and modern allegory was used to show this because it can be presented in ways we are all familiar with.
I like that the elves sectioned themselves off from everyone else. It shows you the kind of people they are. A bunch of assholes that think they're better than everyone else even though it was one of their own that was the worst thing to happen to the world. Everybody gives the orcs shit for siding with him but he and his core followers were a bunch of fucking elves lol! The one who united the 9 races to rise against him was in fact an orc but people shit on the orcs anyway lol! I think it shows how stupid racism is.

For my part I found a fair bit of interest in it, but I have to acknowledge it's all personal bias. I used to GM/play a lot of Shadowrun over the years and it's pretty much Shadowrun without quite as much depth. From that angle I was loving everything I saw. Though as a movie as a whole I can't say it was terrible great.
