I have eight Wardens, but my 'canon' Warden is alive and queen of Ferelden.

I prefer them alive, even if I have to whore out Ali or Loghain to a totally not trustworthy witch for that.
I like my characters, if I play to the end with them, I'm invested and want them to live

Alive when I ended DAO. Alistair did the ritual. I don't know where my warden is now, no one has heard from him in years. Probably in hiding somewhere with Zevran. Or maybe dead.

Assume still alive but off on some wild goose chase out west. Still my favourite Wardens have Zevran with them so it is not all bad.

My Cousland fell in love with Morrigan, and preformed the Dark Ritual. Currently he rejoined Morrigan and Kieran after the events of DAI, and while he didn't find a cure that would work for the entire Warden order, he found the means to remove his taint. I really like Morrigan's character arc in DAI with Kieran and how she talks about my Warden. I am a sap for romances with the dark temptress who thinks love is a weakness, but falls madly in love anyway. And after all my Warden suffered and fought through he is due for a happy ending.

Alive, DR, currently MIA queen to Alistair's king.
I'm not into the heroic sacrifice crap in any game. (Looking at you Shepard)

My Brosca is dead and gone. I certainly wasn't going to risk the Archdemon's soul surviving and putting Alistair on the throne just to let him kill himself shortly after seemed like a waste. I don't mind, Rica and little Endrin are set for life and mother gave up the mosswine.

Both, like the Schreodinger’s Cat. First one was alive and dumped by Alistair, second will die to save Alistair.

My "canon" Warden is alive (albeit without the Dark Ritual), as are all the others I've played through. This is due to the nature of the games as much as anything; there is no way to actually play through a world state where the Warden dies from start to finish, thanks to Awakening, so since I don't see any reason to separate story and gameplay, I likely never will have a Warden who does the US.

Of course, the issue there is that they use a default canon for DAA if you do that, which sucks.

There's no way to have a Warden do the Ultimate Sacrifice in Origins, and then carry that world state over to Awakening. The world state either ends in Origins or begins in Awakening, there's no way to transition with a dead Warden (well, not without some pretty serious rejiggering in with the console and the Toolset, and that assuming playing on PC, of course).

I kind of like the idea of the Warden sparing Loghain and then doing the US, because they give an epic one-liner right before hand. Also Sten thinks you're the bee's knees if you sacrifice your life to end the Blight. On the other hand... Warden-Commander. Awakening. Things make less sense...

I can understand why they did it, I really can. I know there are players that wouldn't have bothered with DAA at all unless they were able to play as their Warden, alive or dead. But I wish they had been able to overcome the technical hurdles to allow for us to play it properly so everything could be correct. Can someone who is on Twitter ask Mike Laidlaw or Mark Darrah to expand on this a bit? I'd like to understand it more. It won't solve the problem, obviously, but more information on the reasoning and limitations would be nice.

They realize it was a mistake on their part to make you play as your dead Warden, but they did so because at the time they believed that people would have wanted to play as their character from Origins no matter what.

Thanks for trying to be helpful, but that's not the greatest method. I've read that some dialogues are messed up (Oghren still talks about Dog, etc) and you retain your Warden's appearance. You're not truly playing as a new person, just changing the background information of your existing character.

If you play through Awakening with a warden who did the ultimate sacrifice, and later import them to Dragon Age 2, does the game still say you did the ultimate sacrifice? I could just import the save from the end of the base game, but I'd like Nathaniel to have his cameo in DA2 as well.

I could just import the save from the end of the base game, but I'd like Nathaniel to have his cameo in DA2 as well. I've no idea. But it's easy enough to check. When you import your DAO or DAA save into DA2, there is a button you can select to look at the plot flags before you actually start playing.

It's hard for me to say which is my canon, since in my first run I actually played through just about every possible ending with my female Amell, reloading saves and replaying Denerim (from the Landsmeet!) onward. It's all a bit muddled after doing that.
But, in hindsight, if I were to pick a canon ending, it would be dead as a Dalek. My Amell burned the candle at both ends (did every possible romance, in other words -- though Alistair was the one that stuck, but it ended badly when he became king and wanted my Amell to be his mistress, pig!), so it was fitting she died young and stayed pretty.

I've got several Wardens, alive and dead, with and without the Dark Ritual.
But my preferred world state is with the Warden alive and letting Loghain redeem himself.
