No judgement in the poll, I am simply curious.
For a very long time, my canon Warden was one who romanced Alistair, made him king, performed the Dark Ritual, and went through DAA and the other DLC. I've grown out of that world. It no longer interests me. So I have decided to completely change my canon in my most recent play. Unfortunately, this means that I no longer have the privilege of reading comics and things where the set canon matches my particular world state, but I'll live with it. That my choices carry over from game-to-game is the more important thing. It will be interesting to finally see Warden Alistair and Queen Anora in successive games when I finally get there.

Alive, but didn't perform the Dark Ritual. You as a player did, even if your character does not. That is what I meant by the description. Perhaps I'll just remove those descriptors. [edit] I had to re-add the poll, if you want to vote again.

He's alive, mostly because doing the US means there's no Kieran (unless you sleep with Morrigan prior to that), and I like the idea of Morrigan having a son. Very few of our companions are parents (Oghren, Loghain... I think that's it) so I think it's cool that she can have a kid. I think the US is a perfectly viable option if you don't care about Kieran's existence, though. One of my favorite playthroughs was as a Dalish elf who was heartbroken over Tamlen's death and felt like Duncan robbed her of the chance to live the life she was meant to. She flung herself on the Archdemon and kept Loghain alive because in her mind, there was no greater punishment than joining the Wardens. edit: come to think of it, I might make this my canon after all. It was a really satisfying playthrough. She had a low-key kadanmance with Sten going on and I hear Into the West every time I think of her.

Alive, dark ritual. Married to Anora with a divine mistress. Though at this point i'd be perfectly happy if they said he's died during calling.

alive without ritual and in a romance with Leliana, i will probably switch to ultimate sacrifice to give him a proper and deserved closure and fuck off.

She's alive and Morrigan performed the ritual with Alistair. Alistair married Anora and they rule The Seven Kingdoms Ferelden. She is romantically involved in with Leliana and is a plaything for Alistair from time to time.

Mine's dead It worked well roleplay wise, as I played a dwarf noble who actually killed Trian. He saw joining the Grey Wardens as a continuation of his sentence to kill darkspawn until they overwhelm him, and tried to use his time with the wardens to redeem himself. So he just didn't see the risks of the dark ritual as being worth saving a criminal like him. It was a very satisfying playthrough. Plus, to me it gives a nice closure to the warden's story.

Both dwarf origins work really well for the US, I think. Guilty DN makes amends with their life and regains their honor, and DC proves they're as noble and self-sacrificing as any "noble".

The character evolution for a DC is interesting because due to growing up in Dust Town they had to look out for themselves and their family first and foremost, likely with a "survival at any cost" mentality. A DC who does the US has to completely reverse their view of themselves and come to the conclusion that there are things in the world worth dying for.

Eh, I don't think you need to want to die, or feel you have to die, just not like the idea of the Dark Ritual. There are also people that take devotion to duty very strongly, so I can see those types sacrificing as well.

Both are alive and well.
Kita (Dalish): She became a Warden because she didn't want to die to the Blight, she's definitifely NOT going to sacrifice her life just because of some stupid overgrown lizard. So she made Alistair do the Dark Ritual with Morrigan, so both of them would survive. Alistair may have broken up with her, but so is life, you can't always have what you want. He's safe that's enough for her.
Bruce (Circle Elf): He became a Warden because he didn't want to end up tranquil. Then he met Morrigan and fell in love with her, so of course he said yes when she offered him a posibility to stay with her and did the Dark Ritual. He's very happy to be Kieran's dad.

There are also people that take devotion to duty very strongly, so I can see those types sacrificing as well. Oh for sure! It is fun though to tie in parts of the warden's origin story to their decision making sometimes. There's plenty of other reasons to be wary of the dark ritual. The warden might not trust Morrigan and/or Flemeth, or worry about endangering a child. As you mention there's the duty aspect. If Alistair is still in the party and going to be King, a character may do the ultimate sacrifice so that the future King of Ferelden doesn't have to. There's a lot of possibilities.

Honestly, the biggest problem I have with the DR is when Alistair does it. Dubious life-or-death consent aside, if you're not romancing him he's a virgin who believes sex is something special and now his first time is with a woman he absolutely hates and does not trust. If you're romancing him, the only woman he ever wants to be with is you. And an even bigger hurdle for me to get over is the fact that he's siring this bastard child who he'll have no contact with..... juuuust like Maric did to him. And sentencing that kid to god-knows-what kind of future with some old god soul (well, we know because DAI, but we didn't back then). That's the main reason I hesitate over the DR. Also the reason Loghain does it most of the time. That, and it's funny to think of Anora having a little brother. 😎

I've never had that play out because the very first play I didn't romance him (or anyone), made him king, didn't harden, and refused the DR, so he sacrificed himself and there was nothing I could do about it. On all successive plays, I romanced him, so that just never entered my mind. But even so, talking him into the DR has never sat well with me. In one play, I wanted to use logic to get him to see that it was a decent choice, but had to resort to manipulative persuasion, which I hated. I reloaded the dialogue several times to see all the options and the "do you trust me?" is the only one that would work. I don't think I can ever get him to do the DR again.

Mine's the queen of Fereldan. Origins is the only DA game where I haven't made the playthrough I port also be the one with the broader plot relevance, ie someone who romanced Morrigan and had a baby with her. I really like my Cousland, she's the perfect level of pragmatic, ambitious, scheming and competent.
