As some of you know, and I recently announced as much in a thread. I’m working to create some Dragon Age Lore videos.
I spent my free time over the past couple weeks researching and writing a script for a King Calenhad video. It has mostly been pretty straightforward, but there is a bit of a timeline discrepancy.
The older codex entries claim Calenhad’s climactic battle with Teyrn Simeon of Denerim happened in 5:33 and Calenhad was crowned king later that same year.
However, the WoT timeline and other entries state that he was crowned in 5:42. I would be inclined to favor the newer lore sources, but the trick is that none of those sources mention the battle with Simeon that I can find. So I’m questioning whether I should treat this as nine years passing before Calenhad had sufficiently secured Ferelden after defeating Simeon or if I should shift the date of Simeon’s fall to the same year as the crowning. Or should I just be purposefully vague about the timing of the battle? Thoughts? Opinions?

When it comes to timelines I'd just as soon trust the early codex as WoT has been shown to make mistakes and some have even been corrected in WoT2 but Calenhad may not have been picked up on before. However, I suppose it is possible to use both dates but in relation to different battles: The sequence of events for the rise of Calenhad was that he became squire to Arl Tenedor the Elder and continued to serve his son, before the latter was slain by Arl Myrddin who in turn was slain by Calenhad. Then Calenhad took over Tenedor's lands and started to consolidate his power.
So maybe the battle with Arl Myrddin was in 5:33. It would then make sense that it took Calenhad some 9 years more to consolidate his power, culminating in his battle with Teyrn Simeon in 5:42. It was only after the death of Arl Tenedor that Aldenon the wise started to assist Calenhad so it likely did take a while to get everyone behind them.
I think it unlikely that it would take 9 years from the defeat of Teyrn Simeon to have achieved this as I understood he was the last real obstacle.
Otherwise I would recommend just being vague with dates. Bear in mind that the battle with Simeon may have been deliberately omitted considering that DG had decided to go with a completely different story behind Calenhad's rise to power in the comic series but I put the latter down to misinformation by the Qunari and, like Alistair, prefer to go with the original and more conventional rise to power of his ancestor.

Keeping in mind that Calenhad was born in 5:10, it does seem unlikely that he had most of Ferelden behind him by the age of 23. Even if he was a teenager when the West Hills battle happened, which was my initial assumption given that he was a supposedly a young squire, uniting a country should take more than a couple years.
