So apparently Intel processors from the past 10 years are vulnerable and Intel themselves can't patch it. OS updates will be shipped out to deal with the problem, but it will result in 5 to 30% performance drops. So if in the coming few weeks you notice that your apps and games are running much worse than before even on your new shiny PC's, you'll know why. AMD is unaffected it seems.
Anyway, just saying. Class action suits are sure to follow. This is bigger than Crapple slowing down iPhones

Can't believe it took them 10 years to find this bug.
No amount of cash that Intel has will ever fix this fuckup of epic proportions.

Barely any real competition from AMD. Intel stagnated and this new Ryzen platform is now causing them to wake the fuck up a little. I think they cheated, I think that to save CPU cycles and gain more performance, they sacrificed security and integrity. Also with governments demanding backdoors everywhere, it could've been done deliberately to allow certain people to take over PC's that they want.

And they generally behave better in games, too.
Oh well.
I guess getting an AMD seems like a good idea now.

That 5% figure got to be taken out of some cherry pick, just to cheer people up. I think we're looking at 35%.

intel's method of "fixing" bugs was always to leverage its position and buy out all the tech mags and testing program makers so they could control the news releases, even now they have the ones they own outright pumping out stories claiming gaming performance will be unaffected and no doubt new performance scores will show the same things as well....that intel is still better than amd in raw numbers.....
and this is the 3rd major performance decrease in the last 12 months for intel cpu's ....
the thing that annoys me most is how there leveraging their position to demand quick fixes be pushed out that also cripple amd's performance despite not having the same problems, this entire problem reminds me of the cpu wars back in the 90's when intels answer was to scrabble for enough finance that they could just buy people off (i guess they cant do that right now due to all the fines biting them)

Wait, wait, wait...let's say I have a tech illiterate friend ( ok, it's me ), how is this suddenly showing up? Doesn't make sense it would affect past/present games and whatnot. Or some mandatory present/future software updates "tie into it"? How was this not noticed before?

Never update your Bios or never install a windows newer than 7 SP1 and never update it and you shall be fine. You just need a trusted anti-virus. Amirite?
And who uses system restore every few months? There must be something really wrong with her system? My windows is installed in 2015-16, never restored and it still works fast and fine!

Sys restore is pretty rare for my rigs. I've none so far for present rig which is mostly for gaming (all of them are). At the most, I'll be doing some unimportant docs. Movies, I don't download from or watch on the internet, it's all blurays, etc. I'm wondering how bad is it going to be come 10th Jan.

I'm still running the same setup from 2013, no problems at all. Max uptime was over 220 days and during it I made music, played heavy games, did video editing, 3D rendering and so on. No problems. Its X-chipset, a bit more expensive but seems to pay off.

I've used Intel cpu's ever since I got into pc gaming, which was roughly 12 years ago and not once have I've had any problems with them.

There are no physical issues with them. It's a security issue that they can't address, but someone has to or else millions of systems are vulnerable and they will address it by creating a software buffer, which in turn slows down performance.

Or some mandatory present/future software updates "tie into it"? How was this not noticed before? its not new, this was a problem back in the early p4 days, the "new" is that the world just woke up and realised intel has been openly telling them their entire core series of cpu's is based on the p4 just miniaturized and bolted together .... most folks wont remember the stories back then (and to be totally fair every publication that printed them went out of business or was bought by intel shortly afterwards so it never happened again) hell most folks probably weren't nerdy enough to read them back then in the first place but there is a reason why AMD sold intel the licence to use that architecture when they moved away from it back in the late 90's and its the sole reason why intel has had an ipc lead over amd ever since ..... you get the performance at a cost and that cost is quite dire ....

Update, 10:56 PM - 1/2/18 - As it turns out, apparently the Linux patch that is being rolled out is for ALL x86 processors including AMD, and the Linux mainline kernel will treat AMD processors as insecure as well. As a result, AMD CPUs will feel a performance hit as well, though the bug only technically affects Intel CPUs and AMD recommends specifically not to enable the patch for Linux. How Microsoft specifically will address the issue with the Windows operating system remains unclear until the company's formal Patch Tuesday update is made known, hopefully soon.
