How do you handle exploration of the various regions. Do you explore all areas in a single region-i.e.-Hinterlands before exploring others, or open up regions as soon as possible once you meet the power requirements. I'm just interested in the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches.

I started out trying to explore everything in one area before moving to another, but quickly realized that was impossible in the Hinterlands (the area with the dragon is not for level 8's), and I got bored easily.
Now I jump around as my mood changes. Sometimes I'll only do a quest or 2 and then go to a new area.

I have a set sort of headcanon plot that defines the when I go to which area, though, with only a couple exceptions, I pretty much do the whole thing when I do go to one. But in each playthrough, I pretty much stick to the same overall order.

Very similar to lilyenachaos - I used to be as completest as possible in each region before moving on, but now I have a few objectives in each area I'll make sure to get out of the way, and if I feel like it... I'll linger around little longer. Otherwise, I'll move on to another region, then maybe another, and just cycle between them.

I have a set order in which I do things. When I get to a new area, I will work on the primary objectives. A bit later on, I will go back and do the full exploration, complete all quests and close all rifts.

I try to head-canon as realistically as I can. The Hinterlands are obviously the first place I go. Usually, after I meet with Mother Giselle I go and visit the Elven artifact nearby, get rid of the bandits and set up a camp. My first visits to regions are usually for that, setting up camps, closing rifts along the way if I pass them, and taking care of the primary objectives be it saving Inquisition soldiers (ie, the Fallow Mire), meeting Hawke and the Warden Contact (Crestwood) and so forth. I try to explore the Fereldan side of the map first before heading to the Emerald Graves, Emprise du Lion and so forth with the exception of the Frostback Basin which I save for later on in the game (at least after Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts).

I definitely got my keyster kicked trying to tackle the Fallow Mire at level 6. I should have spent more time in Hinterlands, or tried not to do too much too soon.

This. The first time I played, I tried to finish everything in the Hinterlands before moving on, and I got so bored that I didn't even want to keep playing the game. Now, I spend more time in the areas that I enjoy navigating (or that have quests I enjoy) and tend to hop around a lot. Off topic, but every time I see your username, my brain really wants it to be "lilyen nachos"
