Hi!
So, having finally played Inquisition a couple months ago, I went ahead and thought up a backstory for my next playthrough (what will probably become my "canon Inquisitor"). Unfortunately I had no one to share it with at the time and never wrote anything down, so I might be forgetting some details... I don't know if there's already a thread like this, but I'd love to share and discuss backstories. (Well... mostly get feedback on mine).
As the human noble origin mentions, a lot of the Inquisitor's family are priests or templars, and "willing or not", they have a similar path in mind for you. What I'm wondering is, how many players actually envisage their human noble character as being "willing"? I could be wrong, but the impression I get from my looking around the internet is "not very many".
So I've decided on my next playthrough to make my guy fall into the "willing" category. The Trevelyans, being a pious family with a penchant for sending third and fourth sons off to the Chantry, actually remind me of the Vaels - Sebastian's family from Dragon Age II.
Unlike Sebastian, however, young Gabriel Trevelyan is already religious and embracing the path before him. At the age of 231, he is the third and youngest child of Bann Trevelyan. He has a good relationship with his family, and loving parents. His eldest sibling (and heir to the bannorn) is a sister; not sure about the middle child yet.
While most people are received into the Chantry at a younger age, his family didn't want to send him away quite yet. The plan was that right after returning from the Conclave (it would have been sooner had the mage-templar conflict not thrown a wrench into the works), he would be received as a monk at the Abbey of Anointed Deverina, one of the prominent religious houses of the Teyrnir of Ostwick. The abbey is tucked into a quiet corner of the Trevelyans' bannorn (and unsurprisingly, they are amongst its foremost patrons), with Gabriel's uncle serving as the abbot. The abbey has also housed the relics of its namesake since the destruction of the cathedral at Kirkwall (Deverina's remains had been moved elsewhere for safekeeping by the time of the explosion). The abbey is guarded by a small garrison of templars, led by a knight-lieutenant who is a second cousin of Gabriel's.
So at the start of the game, Gabriel has some schooling in religious matters, is devout and loyal to the Chantry, and prepared to commit himself to the religious life. He attended the Conclave in good faith with his Chantry relatives... until things went horribly wrong.
Over the course of the game he develops his martial prowess - as a noble, he had received some rudimentary training but was never particularly skilled at it - and comes to develop an interest in becoming a templar once the situation with Corypheus is resolved. Unfortunately, things don't work out that way. The loss of his hand at the end of Trespasser also costs him the templar dream for good.
[1] I determined his age based on the fact that he looks older than Cole, who is described as being "no older than 20". Scout Harding also asks the Inquisitor "You're looking after [Cole], right?" - leading me to conclude the Inquisitor is at least a bit older than 20. Does 23 seem okay to the rest of you?

Scout Harding also asks the Inquisitor "You're looking after [Cole], right?" - leading me to conclude the Inquisitor is at least a bit older than 20. Does 23 seem okay to the rest of you? 23 seems just fine to me! I really like the backstory you've crafted. It's fun to try different perspectives - as you've said, playing a Trevelyan who's willing to go along with their family's wishes as opposed to being reluctant. And I'm always interested in sibling headcanons! My Inquisitor Herah Adaar grew up in Hasmal, the daughter of a Ben-Hassrath agent who'd been working undercover as a slave in Tevinter when she met Herah's father, a Tal-Vashoth who'd been captured and used as a pit fighter by the same mage her mother was plotting against. During the course of this, um... misadventure, things happened, revelations were had, and one hot night in the sack led to a very pregnant Ben-Hassrath agent. They ended up making a run for it together, leaving the Qun and Tevinter behind forever. When Herah was thirteen, her magic manifested for the first time. Neither of her parents knew how to handle this situation - magic was dangerous and volatile and they were trying to live peaceful lives - but her father knew of a mage among the Tal-Vashoth, a retired mercenary who he'd worked with years before. His name was Taashath and he was quite old; he had scars around his mouth, remnants of a harsh life under the Qun. Herah's parents entrusted their daughter to him for several years, and he taught her all he knew. They traveled south and east and west, meeting mages among the Avvar, the Dalish. Former Circle mages. Escaped incaensor. Herah saw more of the world than she'd ever dreamed, and gained knowledge of a number of diverse magical practices. There are surprisingly few job opportunities for a seven-foot-tall horned giant who can shoot fireballs out her ass. Herah worked for Valain's Marauders and the Blackstone Irregulars, primarly human mercenary bands operating out of Ferelden and the Free Marches, before falling in with the Valo-Kas. She and Shokrakar were casual lovers for a time and remain fast friends to this day. She loves dragons and her tiny wife.

A chance to babble about my ‘Canon’ Inquisitor. Sign me up.
Her name is Blodwedd of the Lavellan clan of elves. Her parents, Camthorn and Menaya, where two of the best hunters in the clan, and her elder brother, Gamet, followed suit. So she thought she was expected to be a great one as well. It didn’t help that she was born with a nervous disposition, as such she was prone to being startled easy and borderline GAD. She was always afraid of not meeting the exportations she forced onto herself, and they became a self-fulling prophecy when she was too nervous to meet them. With that, she grew less confident in herself and believed herself a burden on her clan as she couldn’t be like her family.
The first time she felt confident in her actions and what she could do for her clan was when a young halla escaped. She was the one to find him and calm him down long enough to untangle his leg from the bramble he got stuck in. She led him back to camp and to their halla keeper, Fallon. The woman was suppressed that she could calm the normally rambunctious youngster with no prier training and offered to train her as the next halla keeper of the clan rather than her having to continue her training as a hunter, as it was no secret that it was going poorly. Blodwedd happily accepted it as when archery training would go poorly, she’d sneak into the halla pens to calm herself down and to spend time with the beautiful creatures. This fact surprised Fallon as she had never seen they young elf do such a thing.
Blodwedd did apprentice with Fallon and learned all about the halla and of navigation, as the halla keepers are the ones that work with the animal to get from place to place. Fallon didn’t just teach her things about the work for her clan; but also taught her some dagger fighting skills to keep herself safe if the need arose, and methods of helping her anxiety from breathing methods to a special blend of herbs for a tea. When she was given her vallaslin, at the age of 18, she chose the markings of Ghilan’nain, for being the one place in the clan she felt she could do right.
When the conclave happened, just about a year later, Blodwedd was selected to attend along with her cousin, Rhiannon, the clan’s second. Blodwedd questioned why she was the one who had to attend when Rhiannon would have it under control. But the Keeper insisted that it was a good choice as while Rhiannon could keep face and see how this would affect the Dalish, Blodwedd would be a much better spy as with her demure-ness many wouldn’t give her a second look. So she said goodbye to her clanmates, saying the longest one to Fallon who she was closest too and to the halla as she and Rhiannon left. When they were there, the crowds were getting too much for her and she snuck off to get out of them when she heard a scream for help and while she was scared her good natured-ness couldn’t help but assist, and thus her adventures as the very reluctant and scared inquisitor started.
Her character growth through the story is her growing more confident in herself, that she can do things and be brave. In the Fade, the fear demon would chastise and mock her fear of expectations and never reach them, and the gravestone would do the same. She would Despite a rocky start she ended up being extremely close to Cassandra and surprisingly Dorian, who she believed she’d hate when learning that he was from Tevinter, but ended up enjoying his company and sympathising with him. She was best friends with Cole though. She was on neutral terms with most of her other companions, despite her fear of them at first, though she did hate Sera, as she always would play pranks on her and leave her more anxious then she already was, she also didn’t like the blatant disrespect to her religion, even with that she never made Sera leave just never spent too long with her. She got along swimmingly with Josephine, but was scared of Liliana and Cullen at first, more so of the latter after hearing he was a former Templar and seeing the red lyrium Templars and remembering stories of normal Templars from Rhiannon when she was alive. But after seeing him calm himself down in the same way that Fallon taught her, while he was suffering from withdrawals. She then saw him not as the scary general she had to work with but as someone who suffered too, and from then they grew closer first as friends, her occasionally making him tea when he was starting to feel anxious himself be it from the withdrawals or memories of his torture. Then eventfully becoming lovers.
Lots of stuff that wouldn’t really work in canon pretty much her age and a few minor things (mostly order of events) I change in my mind to make her story flow better, but I don’t care and I love and enjoy her story.

My Miranda Trevelyan was the youngest child, kind of a not-very-desired "surprise baby". She felt neglected by her parents and it made her super bitter. She was always the "problem child" who enjoyed driving her family up the wall with pranks, terrorizing the servants and bullying other kids. Then in her teens she started drinking heavily, sleeping around not-so-discreetly and hanging out with outlaws and pirates in the taverns. Didn't care about her parents' religion and made her distaste known at every opportunity. She learned her archery basics from her oldest brother whom she kind of got along with, and most other skills from these pirates and outlaws. Her parents had enough of her antics and sent her off to a chantry in Markham when she was 19, with the entire estate heaving a collective sigh of relief. She hated it there at first, but it gave her time to calm down and think about her life. She mellowed out eventually and turned into a devout Andrastian, even thinking about taking vows or becoming a templar.
It only occured to me much, much later that I basically created the female Sebastian who came from Ostwick. She even kinda sorta looked like him. No regrets.
So basically, if she hadn't been at the conclave, she would be willing to become a templar. She was just torn between templars, becoming an initiate in the chantry or trying out the out-of-cloister life again.
My Alkesta Lavellan was an only and very yearned for child. Her mother is the Hahren of her clan and father - the craftsman. They had hoped and prayed for a child for years and finally had one nearly twenty years into their marriage. They adore her and she adores them back. They couldn't help but spoil her a bit, as far as "spoiling" goes with the Dalish lifestyle. They taught her to question everything she hears from other people and always draw her own conclusions. Her parents themselves have some mildly controversial views on some of the Dalish beliefs and traditions, which she adopted. All of this made her kind of full of herself, thinking she was smarter than the other kids, and gained her a reputation of a stuck up brat. She mostly kept to herself until a girl in her clan started hanging out with her (mostly out of pity, at first) and eventually got her accepted her into her circle of friends. Alkesta always wanted to be a big strong hunter, but she had no talent with any kind of weapon, or just anything in general, only her determination. She sucked at archery the least so she started devoting most of her free time to training, in addition to the proper practices. After a long time of practicing each day until her fingers bled, she caught up with the other kids and eventually became one of the best hunters in the clan. Getting so far on stubbornness alone made her even more stuck up: "So you're a 'natural' aren't you, well I had to work for it". She is also pretty as a statuette and very aware of it. She considers her looks to be about the only "talent" she was blessed with, so taking care of her appearance is almost an obsession to her. She is mostly known in her clan for being "the complainer" and "the skeptic" - whenever any suggestion or decision is made, she is the first to question it, and if she doesn't like it, she makes it known. Repeatedly. Her parents are usually the ones to tell her when to rein it in, but they're proud of her having all these strong opinions and not keeping quiet about them.
After becoming the Herald, having people worship the ground she walks on could have finally made her ego explode, but instead it turned out to be a very humbling experience. She always wanted to be respected for the things she earned, so having people kneel before her for simply surviving through dumb luck felt very wrong and for the first time in her life, she didn't enjoy being praised. Even after she started earning her victories, she couldn't see herself as the messiah everyone wanted. She initially planned to just seal the breach and go home. Didn't enjoy being the Inquisition's recruitment mascot, but sucked it up for the greater good. Actually leading the Inquisitor is something she never wanted and though she eventually made peace with her position, she never really grew to love it and always to some extent felt like a fraud. Still, she took her job very seriously and tried to be the best inquisitor she could possibly be (key word - tried).
Used to fear and mistrust all humans pre-Inquisitions, but quickly grew out of it after actually spending some time with them. Even ended up falling for one. She also started getting into Andrastianism after a lot of soul-searching and at some point stopped giving damn about what her clan might think of her. Even though she still cared for her clan and the Dalish in general, the only ones whose approval mattered to her were her mom and dad, and she knew they would just accept whatever makes her happy.
As for the age, the devs said once that the Inquisitor is of an undetermined age between 20 and 40, so 23 seems fine to me. Mines are 24 and 23 at the start. Both tried their best not to "mother" Cole but failed miserably.
