In the Mass Effect Trilogy and Andromeda, my single player character has always been a Vanguard. I always enjoyed charging headfirst into battle with Shepard, even when it meant certain doom the first time (or multiple times during the Collector Ship mission on Insanity). I remember bringing the Human Vanguard into my very first ME3 multiplayer match (during the open beta). I was thinking I was going to wreck things just like my Shepard. Yet, within seconds into Wave 1, my Vanguard died by the Firebase White ramp by a Cerberus Trooper. How far I’ve come since then!
Please enjoy this hard fought Platinum Solo with the Human Vanguard on Firebase Sandstorm against the Kett.
Objectives: Devices / Retrieval / Retrieval

My initial Vanguard build featured just one point in Charge like in my Batarian Vanguard solo. This led to an overly cautious play style with no room for error, so I ended up re-speccing to Charge 6B Bastion. Unlike the other Vanguards, the only way the Human Vanguard gets any damage resistance whatsoever is by charging:
Now he was a true Vanguard, at least on Wave 1! On the subsequent waves, I was much more careful about when to charge and when to hold back. I think with a four man team, one can play as aggressively as I did on Wave 1 against the non-boss enemies.
Saboteurs more than any other enemy are the ones you have to worry about. They can take your entire shields down in one Ushior shot. A follow up shot will trigger Saving Barrier which means your safety net is gone for another 15 seconds. If you hear that Energy Drain sound charging up, get out of the Saboteur’s line of sight fast! A lone Saboteur is dangerous enough. Two or three of them can have you reaching for that Revive or First Aid Button if you don’t account for them at all times.
Anointed and Observers are also extremely deadly, but the Vanguard has ways to neutralize them — Seismic Nova or Lifting Shockwave — once you strip their shields.
I wanted the extra combo and weapon damage, so I just put one point in Shockwave in this build. Enemies were primed with either Seismic Nova or Incendiary Ammo. To trigger the biotic or fire combos, the enemies had to be close. Charging from distance was not always an option, given the location of the other enemies. As a result, I would often use Charge defensively by triggering a combo detonation and falling off the roof or Building 37’s balcony. In addition to getting a more powerful combo detonation (Shockwave has a 50% combo efficiency), I’d have 5 seconds of 75 DR.
Weapons
Once again, the Rozerad was my main weapon, given its versatility and priming ability. A case could be made to have used Disruptor ammo for better crowd control, but I went with Incendiary ammo in the event that I got the Boss objective. The Shorty Siphon was my backup weapon that I used only a handful of times. Both weapons become more accurate with APEX Training 5B and 6A.
Objectives
I had terrible luck with Wave 6 in my previous attempts. I got Wave 6 Upload five times and Wave 6 Boss once (when I wasn’t specced to take out the Behemoth). It’s such a downer when, after navigating the Platinum gauntlet (with plenty of consumables left), you get a Wave 6 Hack or Upload. There’s no way the Vanguard is going to keep out the Anointed, Berserkers, Behemoth, and Ascendant’s from entering the circle.
After all those failed attempts, I got my preferred objective on Wave 6, Retrieval. Four minutes is an eternity to deliver all four pizzas to the landing zone, and I am always relieved when that objective appears.
Only One Remains!
There’s just one Mass Effect Andromeda Multiplayer character who has yet to have his own Platinum Solo video, the Krogan Vanguard. I’m still testing out different builds, but he’s probably going to be more like a Krogan Soldier than a charging, head-butting Krogan Vanguard. All those accuracy bonuses in Fortify and APEX Training will make weapons like the Shorty, Scattershot, and Piranha sing.
