Alright guys, good news (for me at least...). Since I bought the 1070 and NVIDIA extended the Gears 4 promo to november 16, I actually got the game for free. So now after all the bullshitness of getting the actual code from NVIDIA, I finally got it and I'm downloading the game. Also 80 MOTHER FUCKING GIGABYTES!!!!111 THE FUCK!! It'll take a while... but at some point I'll be able to play the multiplayer. I'll keep you guys updated and maybe we can play some day. The PC version is pretty dead for multiplayer, but there is cross-platform play available for the different co-op modes, and since Gears 4 is one of the games available for Xbox Play Anywhere, you can also play it on an Xbox One without having to buy the game, if you have an Xbox One. No, I don't have have an Xbox One (nor any other console for that matter). Okay, tbh I only care about the co-op, never was a big fan of multiplayer as in PvP. Hopefully that cross platform thing works for me. How's the server system? it has dedicated servers or is P2P like ME3? I'm sure the lag will be an issue regardless considering where I'm positioned in the globe...

I would imagine it works for campaign too, but I'm not sure. The game uses dedicated servers for public matches on the Xbox, and I would assume the same for PC users. Private games hosted by individual players are P2P, for obvious reasons.

Took about 40 hours to download, but it's done. I've been playing through the campaign and left at the beginning of Act 2 I believe (when JD and crew arrive to the village after stealing the fabricator), so far so fun. It brings back some very old memories of the first game. Also the prologue kinda shows a little bit what happened before the 4th game for all of us PC users that have no idea of how the franchise continued, so it's a nice touch.
The PC version is a bit crap in some aspects though. Optimization is great for the latest GPUs at least, it's nice to be able to play on ultra again, I'm getting 58 to 120 fps. However that whole windows store BS with the account and everything... it's just eww. For some reason they wanted me to create some sort of Xbox profile and I'm like "bitch, I don't have an Xbox, why do you want me to create an Xbox account?" I mean, it's pretty straight forward, they just link your windows account, but is a bit annoying. The in-game menus are a bit weird and for some reason there's no third party software compatible if you want to get access to FPS overlays or maybe record or take screens. Nor Fraps nor MSI Afterburner work with the game. The game does have a built in FPS and some other overlays that took me some time to find thanks to those menu screens, but it's there. However you can't move the overlay and it's always bottom right which I don't like. This Windows 10 exclusive BS has to end. I hope they figure by now, no wonder a lot of people is criticizing the game on PC. Game itself is fine, is the Microsoft part the one we don't like. Just put the game/s on Steam and stop with these marketing/exclusive experiments.

I had thought that Microsoft were planning on releasing their exclusives on Steam, but evidently that's just Quantum Break thus far. Gears 4 and Forza Horizon 3 should be on Steam, the Windows Store and it's game service are not good.

Well, finished the campaign today. Overall interesting campaign, but too short I say. I feel like I played for about 10-12 hours (on hardcore mode) and that was it, it definitely leaves the door open for a sequel that's for sure. (Spoilers about the story for people that don't want to know about it): And it definitely felt odd in a way. Like I remember Gears 1 having to fight against the Locust, the whole planet was at war and you had that feeling in every mission: the scale. Here however is about finding the kidnapped people, then finding Marcus and then Kait's mother, and that's it. I mean, sure you do discover the Swarm a.k.a "Locust evolved" in the process, but you don't have a feel like you're doing something big like in the first one, it's just rescuing your people and that's it. That's the feeling I got at least. Also, I'm surprised there're so little guns in the game. I mean, you'd think that after 4 games they'd have introduced a fuckton of new weapons, but it's just the classics plus a few more, not counting the 3 pickups. And then again, I'm assuming those are new guns because I don't know if they where in GOW2 and beyond. However the balance of these weapons feels good, and I'm pleased to use again my favorite: the torque bow. Will try the co-op horde mode one of these days and see how it is.

However the balance of these weapons feels good, and I'm pleased to use again my favorite: the torque bow. Will try the co-op horde mode one of these days and see how it is. The new weapons in Gears 4 are the Dropshot (replaces the Digger from Gears 3), Buzzkill, Shock Grenades (which replace the Ink Grenades from Gears 2 and 3), Overkill, Tri-Shot, R4 Salvo, Embar, and Enforcer. There are also Easter Egg weapons like the Momento Mori, which is a modified super-powerful Boltok that 1-hit kills everything, and Dom's Toms, which are tomato grenades. So, including the new weapons (but not the Easter Egg stuff), there are 21 weapons, assuming I didn't make a mistake while trying to remember them all. Horde is pretty fun. Each player selects a class that gives them certain bonuses in combat and sets up a Fabricator somewhere on a chosen map, then build defenses and other utilities from the Fabricator to defend against DeeBees and Swarm enemies. Each class has different skills that you can equip, and each skill can be leveled up 10 times for added benefit. Ever 10 waves there is a boss round, involving enemies like the Kestrel, Carrier, or Swarmak spawning alongside the standard enemies. After each boss wave, a mutator is applied to the game to make it more difficult, such as enemies having more health, better accuracy, etc. Not related to you post, but I'm Onyx 3 in Ranked TDM, and I'm coming to terms with the fact that I will never be Diamond. My win % is literally 80%, meaning I win 80% of the games that I take part in, but that somehow isn't enough to give me 1 final rank upgrade. It doesn't help that the people I play with, play like they have some developmental disorder. Always rushing and grabbing the wrong power weapons, never providing covering fire, not reviving, always having a poor kill:death ratio, etc. If it were Social quickmatch I wouldn't care, but in Ranked modes I expect my team to at least pretend to have an idea of what they should be doing. I have no idea how I win so many games with people who are routinely awful.

Man, I hope that Early Quit Penalty in Ranked Vs is a harsh one. 3 games in a row and 2 players have dropped out of the team each time Anyone know what the penalty is out of curiousity?

I'm not even convinced there IS a leaver penalty. I've had back to back to back games where people drop, and I just leave (because I'm sure as shit not playing 2v5 or 1v5), but never any penalty.

Okay, so I was playing some horde mode, not fond of PvP personally. It's fun, although there're things that transcend my understanding.
So, whenever you kill someone you can pick the credit things they drop, you can either keep it or carry it to the fabricator to build or buy stuff. But here's the thing, you can "steal" credits from enemies you didn't kill, and the credits in the fabricator are shared, so people can use your hard earned credits to build shit or buy themselves weapons. And I'm like what the actual fuck? In my first game I didn't quite understood what to build and when to build. Basically after wave 10, you really need good defenses otherwise is a matter of time before the entire team kicks the bucket. Some people seem to known this very well and build defenses and build them properly, creating natural choke-points or "ambushes" with turrets and whatnot, but the majority seem to known literally nothing. They never build a thing.
Another thing, are they seriously expecting players to stick in for 50 mother fucking waves???! you're lucky if someone still hangs by the end of the first 10! and once people leave that lobby, nobody else can join according to my experience, so you either keep on with less players or solo.
The concept itself is fun, but some of these things are just annoying.

Almost made it to 30 yesterday. Couldn't pass wave 29, too much BS and we got wiped out 3 times, no credits left to build defenses, it was impossible. I was surprised the same guys stuck for so long. Which brings another issue: progression is absurdly slow in the game, I probably spent 2 to 3 hours in that match all the way from zero to wave 29 with all the multipliers (double health, damage and accuracy for the enemy) and made only 280 ish credits? Jesus Christ, the cheapest package costs 400. And leveling up is extremely slow too. I suspect I'm gonna grow sick of the gamemode sooner rather than later. I'm not fond of grindy MP at all, ME3MP drained every little patience I had left for that. Anyways, so far favorite classes are Sniper and Scout, although haven't really tried a lot of the other classes.

Anyways, so far favorite classes are Sniper and Scout, although haven't really tried a lot of the other classes. Credit progression is what bounties are for. Not all bounties award credits, but a lot of them do and they're fairly easy to complete. Only downside is you can only do 1 bounty per game. There's also usually some kind of community event going on that gives extra XP and/or credits. I know that they're testing competitive crossplay between PC and Xbox users right now as the current event. IMO for Horde they need to bring back mutators, like they had in Gears 3. There were mutators that made the game harder and awarded extra points (less health, higher-rank enemies, etc), and some that just made it silly and fun (headshots make flowers pop out of enemy's heads). TBH, Horde is super fun on Insane difficulty with the Super Reload mutator turned on. It becomes really tense when you're at high levels and the enemies can kill you in 3 or 4 shots, but active reloads let you do the same to them. The bosses are still bullet sponges though. As far as "grindy" goes, that's honestly why I stick to competitive MP. It's not everyone's favorite thing (and that's okay), but to me, Gears is the one shooter series that has competitive MP that I can play for hours and hours on end and never get bored.

Looking for something not particularly highbrow to play until Anthem. Never played Gears of War, but noticed they are very inexpensive in the Xbox store, so have dived into the first one.

Decided to dip back into Gears 2 since there's backwards compatibility. Campaign's still as great as I remember. Forgot about this one lol: Gears 2 has the funniest scene in the franchise too.

I just played through the Ultimate Edition this week, having not played the first game since < 2010. It's pretty decent. Gears 2 is the best though, at least if it's how I remember it. Gears 3 I didn't like, but that's sort of an unpopular opinion. Gears 2 is probably not the *best*, it hasn’t aged super well, but it’s definitely my favorite. It has the best maps for the multiplayer, hands down. They could stand to just remaster Gears 2 and implement the omnidirectional roll and call it a day, I’d play the hell out of that. Or at the very least, port more maps from 2 into 5 when it releases. I’d love to see Ruins, River, Day One, and Nowhere back in gorgeous 4k and st 60 frames per second.
