This is (or was) Roger Ebert

Arguably the most famous and influential movie critic to have ever lived, the first reviewer to ever win the Pulitzer Prize for his reviews and there was a time when this man could either make or break your movie depending on what he wrote about it, yet for all the people that hung on his every word he was just as ignorant as the rest of us, blinded by his own prejudice and married to the past, he was not a creator himself, his only contribution was to give an opinion on the works that other people had created yet he is still celebrated to this day as one of the most influential people in movies, why?
Why is it that so many people place so much value on the opinions of art critics whether it be Roger Ebert or Angry Joe, while some like Angry Joe may know what they are talking about (or at least give off the impression they know what they are talking about), in the end they are only really people with opinions and a lot of the time can be pretentious wankers giving faux praise to works they have been told have value because they know giving the wrong opinion may reveal they have no idea what they are talking about and ruin their hipster artsy cred. As such it is very easy to fool such critics

Even the work of a monkey can receive high praise if a critic is told it has value
If you are looking for pretentious art critics one needs to look no further than the video game industry where the overreaching hands of the self appointed arbiters of geek culture have become increasingly out of touch with the fanbase they are supposed to represent with Gamergate being the final straw casting a huge divide between gamers and the critics, a lot of the time it is clear that these self appointed critics who got their jobs through nepotism have no idea what they are talking and have no idea how to even use a controller
However when confronted with this dozens of games journalists came out of the woodwork defending the footage claiming that you don't need to be good at video games in order to review them, I mean it is not like it is their job to play video games right? Yet for all their faults they still maintain that they should be the arbiters of video game culture, that game developers should cater to their tastes and sensibilities instead of that of the people who actually buy and play the games and most importantly the people who actually create them threatening to either bury the game with negative press or no press at all hoping it never gets noticed while they prop up charlatans like Anita Sarkeesian or the last person who slept with them for positive coverage.

Heck they tried to do this with Kingdom Come Deliverance because Daniel Vavra had the wrong opinion on gamergate, at first they tried to ignore the game giving it little to no press at all (they freely admit this if you listen to their reviews and podcasts), then when they saw that this was not working (the game sold 1,000,000 copies) they tried negative press throwing out accusations of racism because a game in medieval Europe did not have enough black people.
Why do people put so much value on the opinion of art critics?
