A popular theme in modern media is people going beyond the limits of their frail human bodies by replacing parts of themselves with machinery, controlled genetic mutation is perhaps a little rarer and usually reserved for the bad guys but still a fairly common theme as well, we often talk about how cool such themes are but if you were personally able to undergo such procedures provided there were no significant health risks (apart from the adjustments you would need to make getting used to your new body parts, such as the goggles Riddick wears to protect his light sensitive eyes) would you do it and what would you have done?
Lets take general speed and strength enhancements off the table as there aren't any real downsides to such enhancements and you aren't really changing much beyond just getting stronger, but would you get certain genetic enhancements like gills and fins for underwater breathing and better swimming ability? Vertical pupils to see in the dark better? Or would you go the cybernetic option and get synthesizers embedded in your vocal cords to imitate other voices and sounds or talk like Zimos from Saints Row 3? Or perhaps a radio antenna to pick up transmissions or your favorite radio stations without the need for a walkman (i believe you kids call them "Zunes" nowdays)?
Also if you got these alterations would you still be human or would people have to address you with new pronouns and address you as an attack helicopter or be labeled a bigot?

not entirely certain you can genetically alter your body once its fully grown... if you could theres likely to be a good reason why going mutant would be a good option, personally i cant see a need for anything other than strength type enhancements but if i was boat crew or skipper i can certainly see the allure for things like gills and webs to make getting around better, even see the need for a more durable skin but then i quite like common cosmetic enhancements already (like tattoos and piercings) so i dont see the detraction, i probably wouldn't mind some kind of built in hud (electronic or electronic enhanced eyes) and a com link attached to my brain or similar alongside things like tattoos, hell i wouldn't even mind some kind of bone reinforcement (particularly since my spine is currently fucked) through both cybernetics and genetics.... but then ive always been more about the comfortable and practical more than the aesthetics so whatever was available it would need to be useful rather than just outrageous or gimmicky

not entirely certain you can genetically alter your body once its fully grown... if you could theres likely to be a good reason why going mutant would be a good option Lets not concern ourselves with whether or not it is or isn't possible maaaaaaaaaaaan, lets just assume it is somehow possible to alter the genetic structure of humans and influence new tissue growth without ending up looking like the Toxic Avenger. Personally I think I would start off fairly small with a working secondary transparent eyelid to protect the eyes while underwater and allow for better underwater vision, probably vertical pupils or eye enhancements to allow for better vision in the dark, don't know about gills though as I am sure there would be some sort of extra maintenance and challenges that comes with having gills, you see some of the nasty parasites fish get in their gills and it doesn't look particularly pleasant.

I might be willing to replace limbs with artificial limbs, or organs. Depending on how they were handled. Price, reclaiming of non-payment, ect.

due to one of many mass effect oriented dreams I had, I would consider that Nanite Technology to improve overall performance. Like using Nano machnines to increase healing factor to similar to Deadpool/Wolverine, or increase Intelligence.
or using Nanites to correct people with disablities like Down syndrome or heal any damage to a person's broken body like spinal damage.

A DNA (biological) upgrade for the protagonist could gain them new photosensitive pigments added into the rods or cones of our retina, thereby enhancing our central (color) and peripheral (non-color) perception of specific wavelengths in total darkness conditions. Without the DNA upgrade, certain areas and planets are not visible or playable. This would allow us to see an area and fight enemies who otherwise cannot be seen. Perhaps they are also camouflaged by the light conditions of the environment.
It’s important to note that the perception of color is NOT a property of electromagnetic radiation, but instead is a feature of visual perception by an observer.
We might only see a limited number of skewed colors and wavelengths – not full color. This would be completely different than having a combat weapon’s optics upgrade. Our enhanced bio-optical perception could allow us to see minor distinctions in camouflaged enemies and environments.
This reminds me of the grotesque prothean vision Shepard saw when she/he was held by the beacon on Eden Prime. That was a view seen only in yellow, red, black, and warped images. Imagine fighting is such an environment! This is very Sci-Fi-ish.
Perhaps our transport vehicle is rendered totally invisible and we cannot leave the area until we complete the mission and can increase the visible light spectrum in our area.
Hey, I'd be willing to get a pair of $5 (USD) Red-Blue 3-D clip-ons for my glasses if it was necessary to play a DLC and complete certain missions that are very cool to play through. These are readily available.
Some players may need a way to opt out if they are prone to seizures, or are color-blind, or do not have the 3-D glasses. A tick-box in the player configuration could make the same environments playable with the normal human color spectrum.

My concern with cybernetic enhancements is the same as my concern with having a pipeline into my living room for Apple and Amazon. Data brokers get enough info about me from my on-line life.
They don't need to monitor my sleep, exercise habits, ridiculous conversations with my kids, and passing whims. I don't want my smoke detectors and fridge to be able to hear me nor do I want a third party keeping track of when and how I adjust my thermostat.
I already find the idea of a Fitbit too intrusive. Would I ever believe that permanent implants wouldn't he linked to some server farm in Belize?
Genetic mods would be interesting but a massive, permanent commitment. If you have gills where did they come from? What animals have both or do you commit yourself to living underwater forever? I could more easily see doing something cosmetic, like color patterns for skin or fur, maybe a little chameleon. That would be cool!
