There were in-game collectibles that essentially unlocked codex entries, except you had to visit the official Bungie website to read them. Then Bungie inexplicably decided to remove all of them shortly after the release of Destiny 2, so now they can only be found on third-party sites like this one. They're also far superior to any of the in-game story content across both of the games and all of their expansions. Bizarre. Nice that there is confirmed lore to find in Anthem, in the world...

Wasn't Destiny's story on a separate website? Or was that just a rumor? There were in-game collectibles that essentially unlocked codex entries, except you had to visit the official Bungie website to read them. Then Bungie inexplicably decided to remove all of them shortly after the release of Destiny 2, so now they can only be found on third-party sites like this one. They're also far superior to any of the in-game story content across both of the games and all of their expansions. This was an interesting idea because the codex was so nebulous, you could review and ponder what it was you had found offline. Nobody is going to be doing that again I think.

I'm going to follow up my previous post with another concern.
I played all the D2 story solo on all three characters they give you, because I wanted to be able to stop, take a breath, explore, listen, admire the view, watch unaware enemies... and I really don't think I would enjoy it as much if I am in a party chat with others, who are steaming ahead killing everything solving puzzles (if they have such gameplay), learning the lore and chatting about the pizza topping they're going to order. I can cope with the endgame stuff in D2 because you repeat it and you're not experiencing areas for the first time. It doesn't matter so much, it's more about the gameplay and camaraderie and less about saving humanity. How am I going to immerse in the story of Anthem when I'm in my hub, but in a party chat with others? They seem to think that people who play online chop and change friends every 5 minutes. If I'm on for an evening, I mostly spend it with those I originally joined, but the next day, it could be a different group. AAARgh!
I'm thinking also of Borderlands, where in 1, I soloed the whole game, but in 2, I teamed up with various people and we had our own playthroughs together. But in Borderlands there isn't this splitting and rejoining for the next mission. I'm guessing Anthem may be a bit like the Division (if I remember right) where you all enter the base building through the same door, but then you're in your own private area, and once you leave you're back in the fireteam.
If you can make a new character as your 'non-solo' one, it would be better.
I dunno, I'm rambling... But that's because I want it to work, and do well after Andromeda, but I have a horrible suspicion it won't work 'for me'... and I'll be sticking with D2 (and ME3MP) as my social games.

Never played The Division, but I've been with Destiny since the first beta and still play on a regular basis today along with all of its expansions so far. I always do the campaigns solo, but of course you don't really get much out of it in a narrative sense, since there's not much of a narrative to begin with. But I stick around because the gunplay is fun and I've grown fond of PvP, and I'm very much looking forward to Forsaken, though I'm disappointed that Bungie themselves gave away a big spoiler.
With Anthem though, I intend to avoid other players as often as possible. I have no interest in lobbies or cooperating with others here. I'm going to do my best to make the most of whatever solo-friendly things the game has to offer. It's my hope that, unlike Destiny, BioWare manages to put something intriguing in its game world that makes me give a shit beyond fun Javelin goodness.
On the subject of Javelins, I like that there's no "class" this time. It's just my human pilot with power armors to choose from, adding on bits either with whatever in-game currency there is and I guess whatever RNG sees fit to give me out in the world.

Division player with about 500 hours. My biggest concern with Anthem is the first person POV at the Hub city. It's one thing to have the occasional cutscene from that POV, but if I have to move the character around in first person, I'll get sick - unfortunately. Anthem does sound like it will have a richer story than the Division currently does, though I do like the story elements that the Division does have. Would love it if they fleshed it out further, for the Division 2 (and I really want to stay in NYC ). Final thought - Anthem will be on my radar. I will have to watch some live game play to see if I can "stomach" the hub section. Might I suggest... you may want to try the demo to know for sure. Your tendency to motion sickness from FP may be somewhat ameliorated by driving yourself rather than watching someone else. I've known some people who get motion sickness riding in a car, but not when they are driving.

Yeah, that's the obvious answer, but its a bit like inviting friends over for a BBQ but making them leave the house every time you pop to the fridge for a beer. I'm talking about friends, not pugs, there's usually a lot of banter being thrown around

I played about 22 levels worth of the Division. I liked the combat and powers, but my social group took multiple days of vacation and completely blitzed past me in leveling, so I had to do it solo. The combat stopped being fun when I realized that the enemies were just bullet sponges and enemy groups were designed for player groups.
I tried Destiny for a few days after a friend begged me to play. The combat felt exactly like Halo which didn't give me too many warm fuzzies because the story felt flat to me.
I should mention that I played loads of World of Warcraft so I am completely burnt out on MMOs. The social obligation to play ruined it for me. I missed out on some real life events and good games. I liked ME3MP and DAIMP because if I wasn't there, things would go along just the same with no problems.
Anthem being described as a Destiny/MMO means it has a lot to prove to me since I won't have any of my ME3MP crew to play with.

It still doesn't let you do the missions in a way you want them to though...as you're kinda obligated to go with the general consensus of how to proceed. Even in the destiny raids, I'd spawn in by myself just to look around. In a strike in Destiny, I stopped and spent 15 minutes dancing with my shadow in one particularly well-lit area just becuz reasons I couldn't do that in a fireteam, their progress forward would have pulled me through. These worlds are so beautifully generated and populated, its a shame not to stop and smell the rose equivalent, and thats not so easy when you're in a group, especially as you only get one playthrough.

Well, no, but... (what about the loot!!) I think I'm struggling to explain myself. I think it boils down to wanting to experience the story first in my own way without interruptions, which, when playing with others, is nigh on impossible. I don't want someone saying look here, there's a secret area. I want to find it myself. At least in Destiny, with more than one concurrent character, you get the best of both. You can do the story missions solo and have a challenge and take your time etc etc, and another char that you do them all with friends, and get a different experience. Of course you're right, you could do the story solo then start again... it really depends how much time you have to invest to finish the game (story-wise), and whether you can be bothered to. I shouldn't be stressing about it though they've got to show me it's going to be worth buying first

You can replay story missions on the same character in Destiny. That's what Meditations are for. Admittedly, you've got less choice about which missions to do.

I'm a huge Warframe player (and still don't get why people consider Destiny as a reference), and also played (and enjoyed) The Division, but so far I'm not impressed by Anthem Maybe if it gets great reviews (and a good sale), I'll get it, but it won't be a day one buy like for Mass Effect games
BTW that comes from someone who loves jetpacks and power armors (missing Firefall :'( )

Well, to answer the OP. I'm both. Been playing Bioware games since Kotor released, then even got really involved in BSN. I also played Destiny 1 a lot. Mechanically it just hit a very nice sweetspot for me that had gotten out of raiding in SWToR and other shooters like Halo so it was laidback and competitive enough. I don't know, everything but the story just clicked with me on Destiny 1. Destiny 2 I've watched and I'm not buying it so I'm interested in Anthem but I certainly would like to try it myself before buying it. How well it plays might be the key factor to me purchasing it or not.

Maybe 100 hours in Destiny 1, almost 400 hours in Destiny 2, and 170 hours in The Division. You could say that "shared-world loot shooter" is up my alley, but I am 100% on the skeptic train for Anthem. I am (was) a huge BioWare fan, but this game looks more like Destivision than it does BioWare of old. I'm done with Destiny at the moment and probably not going back for Forsaken, because while I am susceptible to the psychological hooks these games have I'm also hugely critical of them while I'm playing them if the developers are constantly screwing the pooch.
I mentioned elsewhere that I enjoy having front row seats to a trainwreck so based on that possibility alone I'll probably end up playing Anthem on launch. But if it's not blow my socks off-level excellent, there are plenty of other games I'll be playing come spring 2019.
ed: Also we haven't really seen anything about the loot aspect of Anthem yet, which seems weird. Does anyone actually see this game coming out Feb 2019?

Played almost 500hrs of The Division, at least 75% solo until I was lucky to friend a couple of people in the forums and then started doing co-op Challenging Missions and some Incursions. Hated The Dark Zone, got ganked so many times when trying to solo in there. The Division filled a slot for me between DAI and MEA, I actually liked it far more than I thought I would but it did become a grind fest especially when you are spending most of the time playing solo.

Wondering if anything has changed for Destiny players in the last 6 months, in relation to Anthem. Yes, no, maybe? Destiny is a strange one, for I know a lot of people really liked the expansion they released and say it really fixed the game, but with the season pass they just released people are upset because it could take them weeks to open up content they can play. From what I see from people that still play the game Bungie does something good and then decides the next best action to shoot themselves in the foot.

Think I was always going to try Anthem. I really like Destiny's multiplayer component, along with the Flashpoints in TOR, so I'd like to see what Anthem has to offer. If the plot turns into some sort of neverending serial, I might stay away.
"You have defeated BIG BAD and saved universe, HOWEVER there is ANOTHER big bad lurking in the wings to destroy universe" - repeat for every expansion.
Mass Effect and DAO were the games that pulled this off well. DAI and MEA not so much. DAI: "You stopped the breach, but some dood will open it again! Buy the next game to stop him, mwahahaha...."

Despite it's many failings, there is one thing Destiny nailed to a tee: a musical hook. I'd recognize that horn solo anywhere (0:12). It still gives me chills.

I sometimes see people saying that Anthem will be the "Destiny-killer" but I don't see that happening; as someone who's an advocate for Anthem succeeding. It boils down to a number reasons:
1) FPS games typically sell better than third-person shooters. It's why shooters like CoD and Battlefield eclipse games like Gears of Wars. There's also the fact that, for Destiny, there's a very visceral and satisfying feedback system involved in its shooting mechanics that other games don't touch.
2) Destiny has PvP, which brings in a significantly larger crowd that Anthem won't have (at least initially). PvP players are people who can stream and promote the game to a wider audience, which boosts sales and player retention. I don't see this being the case for Anthem
3) It likely won't be able to capture the same experience as Destiny's raids. For as many issues as Destiny has, there's also a lot of thought and production that goes into their raids, which make a majority worthwhile activities. These activities foster community cohesion, and also boost viewership of the game because of World-First raiders. BioWare, so far as we know, is saying that they'll have Raid-like experiences. What does that entail?
4) There's something to be said about being "1st" in a respective genre/subgenre. Being that Destiny is the first high-profile MMO-lite game, and it was a game that had a large install base due to it being developed by Bungie, there's a comfort factor that people with the game that other developers can't touch. That isn't to say other developers can't do well - or even better - in the same genre.
I think the best case scenario for Anthem, is that its able to show how a story can be told within the MMO-lite genre, and that it will highlight some of the relevant faults with Destiny's core systems (such as: Personalization, Power Fantasies, good story campaign, etc). More than likely, after a few months, Anthem will hang around the 40-60k player base for daily engagement; maybe upticking to 100k during new content additions. What worries me about the game isn't so much that it may not review successfully, or make a profit. It'll depend on whether it can exceed EA's lofty sales and recurrent monetization goals. If EA doesn't see the money flowing enough, they may decide to cut the game short within 3 years.
I'm probably sounding pretty negative, but I tend to think this will be the realistic outcome of Anthem in this MMO-lite landscape; where Destiny still dominates. That's not even including The Division 2 releasing shortly afterwards. With all that being said, I still want to play Anthem and I hope the game is able to perform well as it evolves over time. Competition in this genre is something that beneficial for it (as a whole). I fully expect it to launch with economy issues, as do many games in the MMO genre. For me, having played Destiny so long, I for one can appreciate all my gains taking place on a single character. Having to replay content three times over on Destiny (for each character class) is laborious, if not outright frustrating.

Buy the next game to stop him, mwahahaha...." Where Destiny’s multiplayer component has always failed a bit for me is in the stuff like raids and nightfall strikes, activities without matchmaking that make it hard for people without a dedicated group of friends to complete it. I’m happy that Anthem is going to have matchmaking for all activities.

At least in Destiny, with more than one concurrent character, you get the best of both. You can do the story missions solo and have a challenge and take your time etc etc, and another char that you do them all with friends, and get a different experience. You can replay story missions on the same character in Destiny. That's what Meditations are for. Admittedly, you've got less choice about which missions to do. They got rid of Meditations in favor of Heroic Story Missions. Now you're given a list of 5 random story missions (from vanilla Destiny to Forsaken); which rotate daily. This actually makes me wonder if Anthem will let you replay missions over.
