I stumbled upon Xenogears back in 1999 or 2000, and thought it was bizarre and interesting. The detail of the sprites and maps was intricate, and the lore surrounding the planet, the people, the history and the narrative of the plot was insanely detailed. I love games that aren't afraid "to go there", and Xenogears is like the very first I've played like that.

well, it's my favorite JRPG and RPGs in general so, that's that.

But what do you all think about the plot and the religious overtones? Honestly I became intrigued with it when I learned it was almost banned here in the states, the rest basically took care of itself.

The judeo christian mythology stuff was fun but it wasn't really a big deal. Take the biblical names away and nothing would change. The bible stuff was just some added flavor.

I often find myself comparing Xenogears with Chrono Cross, which I refer to as "Xenogears lite". Really Chrono Cross is an awesome game, and a good sequel to Chrono Trigger and surprisingly deep with pseudo-religious themes, racial themes, war & death I find it more to be like a secular/medieval version of Xenogears; which was more modern/futuristic with heavy religious themes. Both should be played imo.

I like Xenogears, but I feel it's a tad overrated. I dunno; I've played it twice and it didn't grip me as much as others said it should. Not to mention that it had some of the worst dungeons I've ever experienced in a game (The Kislev Sewers and the Tower of Babel still give me nightmares to this day).

I feel ya, I absolutely HATED scaling the Tower of Babel...only fall...and fall...and fall again, to try all over.

Yeah, the mythological aspect was all fluff. That said, it was definitely a great game with a few certain hinky bits (the platforming, the slow text, the incomplete second half to name the major ones). I'd still put it near the top of my experience with JRPGs during their big PSX boom though. FFVII, FFTactics, and Star Ocean 2 are probably its only notable competition that I can recall off the top of my head.
