These days it takes a lot for a piece of game journalism to offend me, I mean if you expect rubbish around every corner it's no longer distressing when you actually encounter it. Or as distressing anyway. I think a recent PCgamesN article has done it though, I think I might actually be offended. This guy must really think gamers are utter fools. So the article is titled "There's more Bioware in Anthem than you might think" and in the article it lists 3 ways Anthem is very Bioware. 1 - Bioware's roots are in D&D, and what's iconic about D&D games? That's right, towns, and dungeons (Bioware's never been about the "dungeons" but whatever, lets not let pesky facts ruin this person's intoxicating words). Towns are like the party's down time, and dungeons are like the party's battle time. And LOOK AT THAT, Anthem has this as well. You have a hub for down time, and a dangerous wilderness to adventure in. I mean, you can't get more Bioware than this folks. I mean, it's not like JRPGs have been doing this long before Bioware started ahaha ... 2 - Anthem isn't sci-fi but rather science fantasy, which makes the game more Bioware-y. You see, Bioware is a studio of fantasy nerds and Bioware has always chosen to "escape into new worlds rather than explore our own" (not really the difference between fantasy and sci-fi but let's just accept it ... let's try and accept it anyway). He then quotes Flynn as saying “where you see a lot of amazing things happening but we don’t worry too much about why they’re happening or how they’re happening, the science of it." This isn't actually the definition of science fantasy, it's the very definition of "soft science fiction" but once again lets not let pesky facts get in the way, because our intrepid journo immediately launches into his point's conclusion, which is Anthem is "a world of wizards and warriors, simply hand-waved in a different way. The ancient and abandoned Shaper technology that provides the impetus for Anthem’s action is so old and advanced that it’s indistinguishable, you might say, from magic." For anyone interested, fantasy-magazine defines "science fantasy" as "like hard or soft scifi but mixed with magical or supernatural elements, or that uses alternate or imaginary science and technology that is simply impossible given all known scientific laws, theories and constraints." But I'm sure Anthem's ... pseudo science fantasy has you already sighing with nostalgia, reminded of Bioware's very best. 3 - You play in a party. That's right, apparently the ability to co-op with other people, a staple of every MMORPG and online shooters, will remind you very strongly of Bioware's player controlled companions of yore. So Jeremy Peel of PCGamesN has conclusively proved that Anthem feels quite Bioware ... or that he's high on crack. Probably the latter. www.pcgamesn.com/anthem/anthem-RPG-bioware

That is some creative bending of concepts. But I found the the part about emergent companions quite funny.

Does scraping the bottom of the barrel for anything, just anything at all to write about still equal journalism? Oh and I had no idea when playing other games that going back to the hub for 'downtime' was directly stolen from BioWare.

I don't know about the article, but I don't think there can be more Bioware in Anthem then there already is, since it is pretty much all Bioware.

While I don't understand where he is coming from at all, its just refreshing seeing articles based on personal opinions on the positive side towards BioWare instead of people just making mountains out of mole hills on the negative side of things.

I disagree. If people think Bioware is producing garbage, those same people should be talking about it. Let no one be unaware of a lousy product.

Are you sure that article isn't full-on satire? Or would that be giving the author too much credit?

Are you sure that article isn't full-on satire? Or would that be giving the author too much credit? Well, it is like the thread here. It isn't an attempt at serious discussion. So they need something around which they can place ads and OP needs a roundabout way to throw some muck around. Are you sure that article isn't full-on satire? Or would that be giving the author too much credit? I had the same thought. It does read as satire. If he was serious ... with friends like that, we don't need enemies. It is not like the author suggests Bioware started som D&D thing, or fantasy or, co-op. the statement is merely that it is there, just as it has for most of Biowares history. Anyway the click-bait worked. OP lead us to it, if not it would have flown way below my radar.

Oh I know, I have given up on anything really from the internet for years now. My opinion to me is the only one that matters when it comes to a game. Since I play on PC I take full advantage of return policies and decide if a game is worth keeping.

Are you sure that article isn't full-on satire? Or would that be giving the author too much credit? Really shitty pieces of journalism can often be confused with satire, because they're just that bad. Because of this normally serious news outlets will clearly label an article either comedy or satire when they write a satirical piece. In this instance because there's nothing to indicate otherwise, the former (it's just a really horrible piece of journalism) is more likely.

Wait, is PCGamesN a site people actually respect? That's news to me. I don't think anyone respects PCGamesN. Despite Cyberpunk2077 demo being pre-alpha and the creator of the Cyberpunk universe telling fans "they can wait a few more years", a couple of days ago PCGamesN confidently announced June 2019 as the release of CP2077...

This is why I wish Bioware would face the music and just come out and say it's not a traditional Bioware game, because - in a majority of aspects - Anthem isn't. Doesn't mean it can't tell a good story, or have well written characters, or just be a solid new IP, but this is about as divergent from a traditional Bioware game as you get. Own up to it. Yeah, that'll suck for Biofans that still have to wait for DA4, but no studio should have to feel tied down to only two IP's (Dragon Age and Mass Effect) forever.

Unless you got a time machine you can't really affirm that.
Also how do you define a "Traditional Bioware" game? Because since i started playing their games i can say they have been changing a lot.

Unless you got a time machine you can't really affirm that. Also how do you define a "Traditional Bioware" game? Because since i started playing their games i can say they have been changing a lot. Generally its marked by being a single-player RPG. Anthem, for all intents and purposes, is a looter shooter. Just to clarify, I'm not dogging Anthem, as I actually hope the game does well. But for as much as I think certain Bioware fans came into Anthem with the wrong assumptions (companions, romances, offline play, etc), I do think Bioware should be a bit more forward in saying that it's a game that stands in contrast to their other titles.
