Welcome to Tapster's Tavern
"Ooohh, I've heard of dwarves who get in fights 'bout every time they drink,
"Ooohh, I've heard of dwarves who get in fights 'bout every time they drink,
And those who need to have a woman just to help them think,
And if you want to see a dwarf whine and beg and plead,
Just pour out all his ale and take away his mead!
There's never been a Paragon of Wisdom or of Thinking,
And though I tried a time or two, I ne'r got raised for stinking,
But hang around here long enough and don't you go a blinking,
'Cuz someday I am gonna be the Paragon of Drinking!"
"You don't anger the dwarf fans. They're prepared to go to war." - Mike Laidlaw
You love Dwarves ? You think that they're the best fantasy race ever? Politics in Orzammar make you dreamy? You sigh longingly when you think about Kal-Sharok? You would fight anyone who calls nugs ugly? The sounds of dying deepstalkers is music to your ears? The Deep Roads are your favorite part of DA:O just behind The Fade? You're moved by the dedication of the Legion of the Dead? None of the above but you saw some light and decided to stop by for a moment and have a nice chat while tasting some dwarven beer? Then you're at the right place, salroka!
Tapster's Tavern is the continuation of BSN's Dwarf Support Thread. With Bioware shutting down their community site by the end of the month, we decided it was time to look for greener pastures, so here we are! Some of us also went to RDF so do not hesitate to visit our twin thread there: Even more dwarven stuff, straight from Orzammar !
So please, please, come in and be merry!

How the Deepstalker Came to Be

Veata, Tezpadam!
A poem performed in singsong style for dwarven toddlers.

Inquisition Only Content
Dwarf-specific content in Inquisition, a post by Gilsa:
- Special conversation with Josephine. You can choose to believe in the Stone, Maker, or be agnostic.
- You can choose if you've ever been to Orzammar or not. (Varric has never been, for example.)
- You can choose your level of involvement in the Carta: violent thug, strictly surface goods with wealthy houses, or "none of your business."
- Varric will acknowledge your Carta background in the prologue after he joins your group.
- There are brief comments when you clear the Carta. (They're not of Cadash's clan so you're not going to run into anyone Cadash knows.)
- There will be dwarf NPCs in Haven and Skyhold and to a lesser extent, Val Royeaux, that will provide banter on the dwarven perspective.
- The war table missions for dwarves are fine. It provides context for why Cadash was at the Conclave at the first place and why Cadash is no longer a part of the Carta. The person writing to you gives off a Leske vibe, that someone that is looking out for you. Pay attention to which advisors you choose. Cullen will end things early.
- The vibe they get is the same as a second-hand citizen. They're generally seen as greedy merchants or a criminal.
- Several of the companions will comment on your dwarf nature. Blackwall is the best with this because he has exclusive dialogue with both male and female Cadash about this precisely (human, elves, and qunari get a generic "thanks for recruiting me!" response). Dorian will be thrilled that you're challenging stereotypes. Cassandra will ask about your beliefs and you can point out in a couple of places that you're a dwarf. She will respect and acknowledge this later on in the game as well.
- I do remember reading notes while clearing out either Valammar or the fortress that the Carta has noticed the Herald is a dwarf. They're not sure what con you're pulling. It does get acknowledged.
- The Hissing Waste banter in the tombs is mostly companion specific. Cadash is discovering stuff like this just like everyone else so there's no real reason for Cadash to have special insight on the paragons of old.
- Scout Harding will comment on seeing a fellow dwarf. It's been pointed out that when meeting Dagna for the first time, the dwarf will see her directly (taller races will look side to side and then look down to see her). Kieran will tell the Cadash he/she is short and if you pick the middle option, you will hear the only reference to the Titans in the game.
- There is no dwarven throne to sit on in Skyhold. If it's strictly tied into judging people, then there aren't any dwarves to judge.
- Despite being from House Cadash, there is no mention of Shale at all.
- I remember reading a codex in one of the rooms in Skyhold, with someone writing to his parents talking about how inspired he is by Cadash and how he wants to join the Inquisition.
- If you are importing an Aeducan or Brosca world state, the dwarves at the Orlesian ball will comment on the current dwarven king and the current paragon.
- The letter from Hero of Ferelden (if dwarf) will acknowledge Cadash's dwarfness as well.
I can't really remember anything else off the top of my head. Humans still get better content and this game is heavy on elven-lore, which is good. I think dwarves will get their turn at some point. David Gaider has expressed an interest to return to the dwarven setting, perhaps Kal-Sharok, in the future, but said they'd need the right story to make that happen.

Dwarven related dialogue Tree from Origins Orzammar
The typed dialogue comparing Harrowmont's and Bhelen's attitude towards the Paragons. (Audio of this gossip in the Video Links)
King Bhelen rules Orzammar
Paragon Aeducan:
"Has there been news of Paragon Aeducan?"
"Not in months. The assembly insists on declaring the Paragon dead, but King Bhelen refuses to give up the search."
Paragon Aeducan, deceased:
"Is the statue of Paragon Aeducan as grand as they say?"
"More grand, probably. King Bhelen spared no expense. It is a second Paragon in his own house, after all."
Paragon Brosca:
"Has there been any news of Paragon Brosca?"
"Not a whisper. We could use the guidance of a paragon about now."
Paragon Brosca, deceased:
"I've heard the statue of Paragon Brosca has finally been unveiled to the public."
"It stands in front of the palace. King Bhelen wants all of Orzammar to venerate his wife's noble house."
King Harrowmont rules Orzammar
Paragon Aeducan:
"Has there been news of Paragon Aeducan?"
"No. King Harrowmont has been forced to declare the Paragon dead."
Paragon Aeducan, deceased:
"Is the statue of Paragon Aeducan as grand as they say?"
"It's a little ... small. Several deshyrs have accused King Harrowmont of cutting costs."
Paragon Brosca:
"Has there been any news of Paragon Brosca?"
"Not a whisper. We could use the guidance of a paragon about now."
Paragon Brosca, deceased:
"I've heard the statue of Paragon Brosca has finally been unveiled to the public."
"Yes. King Harrowmont is quite proud of it. Not every king gets to add to the Hall of Heroes."
Non-dwarf warden imports only:
Paragon Branka (same dialogue for both kings):
"Any news of Paragon Branka?"
"Not since the king cut off her supply of casteless. Ghastly business."
(Note: The above line appears regardless of whether the Anvil of the Void was preserved or destroyed. Weird.)
Paragon Caridin (same dialogue for both kings):
"Is there any progress on the Helmi expedition to Amgarrak?"
"House Dace remains steadfast in blocking all attempts to get into the thaig."
A Switcheroo on naming the Orzammar King
Quite hefty content to follow:
IF YOU DO PROVINGS AGAINST BHELEN (doesn't matter if you talked to Vartag first and then betrayed him or just did Dulin's quest before talking to Vartag -- I am starting the dialogue where both trees dovetail into wanting to make amends with Bhelen:
PC: I need to talk to Bhelen.
Vartag: "Well, you have an unusual way of showing it. Why would the prince possibly meet with someone who came out publicly against him?" (VO: scornful)
1. I want to make it up to Bhelen. He's the rightful king.
(failed persuade check) Vartag: "That is the most transparent ploy I've ever seen." (VO: mocking)
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*
(passed persuade check) Vartag: "Nothing would make up for what you've done. Unless..." (VO: dismissive, then reconsidering)
(IF: DN) Vartag: "The usurper knows the history between you and Bhelen." (VO: considering)
Vartag: "Harrowmont has no reason to believe you're anything but loyal." (VO: considering)
(IF: Sten in party) Sten: "There are not enough of you for all the alliances you make." (VO: disapproving) *Go to Sten Tree 1*
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "Bah. Why are we even discussing this? Fool's errand upon fool's errand, that is all it ever seems to get up to."
(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)
2. And now Harrowmont trusts me. Unlike your other spies.
(failed persuade check) Vartag: "He trusts you because you serve him. And that means Prince Bhelen has no business with you." (VO: dismissive)
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*
(passed persuade check)
Vartag: "Hmm. I see your point. Had you come to us first, Harrowmont would have suspected you." (VO: thinking)
Vartag: "But now, he has no reason to think you're anything other than his champion, on the Proving grounds and off." (VO: realizing)
(IF: Wynne in party) Wynne: "What are you doing? You gave Lord Harrowmont your word!" (VO: outraged) *Go to Wynne Tree*
Vartag: "Are you saying you'd infiltrate his ranks for us? Let the prince know what's happening on the inside?" (VO: seizing on a good idea)
3. I want to tell him to back down. He'll never be king.
Vartag: "Hope you keep that sense of humor when the Assembly votes Harrowmont out on his ear." (VO: not amused) *END DIALOGUE*
WYNNE TREE
Vartag: "My lady, you do not know Harrowmont as we do. Long has he plotted to steal the throne from the Aeducans--" (VO: in an overly polite, sweet way trying to win someone over)
(IF: PC is dwarf noble) Wynne: "Just as your Prince Bhelen plotted to have his siblings killed and exiled?" (VO: not buying it)
(IF: PC is NOT dwarf noble) Wynne: "And they say your prince killed his own brother and father." (VO: with distaste)
Wynne: "It seems it is only Lord Harrowmont's influence that prevented him from profiting from his crime." (VO: approves of Harrowmont)
Vartag: "Keep your companion under control. I would hate to see her thrown into the Deep Roads because of a... cultural misunderstanding." (VO: threatening quietly)
(IF: PC is dwarf noble)
Wynne: "Don't do this. Your brother used you once; he will do so again." (VO: a reasoned appeal to the player)
1. He is still family. I must find it in me to forgive him.
(passed persuade check) Wynne: "Then you are a better person than I am." (VO: grudingly)
(failed persuade check) Wynne: "Forgive him, yes, but from a distance. Must you get so close?" (VO: appealing to the player's good sense)
1a. I do not wish to argue this. I made my decision. *See line 4*
1b. Yes, if only to irritate you. *Same response as line 4*
1c. You're right. I shouldn't be so foolhardy. *See line 2*
1d. Fine. If it will please you, I will not work with Bhelen. *See line 3*
2. You're right. I shouldn't be so foolhardy.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*
3. Fine. If it will please you, I will not work with Bhelen.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*
4. I do not wish to argue this. I made my decision.
Wynne - [APPROVAL: low decrease]
(IF: Sten in party) Sten - [APPROVAL: low decrease]
(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(IF: PC is NOT dwarf noble)
Wynne: "Harrowmont seems an honorable man. This Prince Bhelen will not even deign to speak with you. Why should you help him?" (VO: appealing to the player's good sense)
(IF: Dwarf Commoner) 1. Working against him might harm Rica and my nephew.
(medium persuade) Wynne: "I suppose I never considered that..." (VO: realizing)
(no persuade) Wynne: "But he seems like a thoroughly loathsome individual. I think you are making a mistake." (VO: dislike for Bhelen)
1a. I do not wish to argue this. I made my decision.
Wynne - [APPROVAL: low decrease]
(IF: Sten in party) Sten - [APPROVAL: low decrease]
1b. It's my mistake to make then.
Wynne - [Approval: low decrease]
1c. Fine. If it will please you, I will not work with Bhelen.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*
2. I should not judge him for understanding him fully. *Same responses and persuade checks as line 1 above*
3. I didn't like Harrowmont that much.
Wynne - [Approval: low decrease]
4. I just want to explore my options.
Wynne - [Approval: low decrease]
(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)
STEN TREE 1
(IF: PC is dwarf) 1. This is how things are done in Orzammar. It's politics.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*
(IF: PC not dwarf) 2. I don't know enough about either to make a decision.
Sten: "Then choosing one is the same as choosing the other. What matters is having the courage to make the choice." (VO: sanctimonious)
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*
3. I'm just keeping our options open.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*
4. I am just being cautious.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*
5. I think it shows cunning and circumspectness.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*
STEN TREE 2
1. Isn't it obvious I've chosen to serve Bhelen?
(passed persuade) Sten: "Obvious? Hmph." (VO: uncertain)
(failed persuade) Sten: "All that is obvious is that you're acting like a coward." (VO: sanctimonious) *Go to Sten tree 3*
2. I know what I'm doing. Don't worry.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)
3. I prefer to take a more cautious approach.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)
4. Very well, perhaps we should stick with Harrowmont.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*
STEN TREE 3
1. Then I'm a coward. Now shut up.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)
2. I don't just bumble into things like you do.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)
3. We'll have to agree to disagree.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)
4. Then I suppose we should stick to supporting Harrowmont.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*
(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)

The Written Word
"Facts" about the Casteless
- Considered to be Non people
- Looked down upon since the foundation of Orzammar, seen as rejected by the Stone and the Ancestors themselves.
- The casteless haven't just been rejected by society, they've been spiritually rejected, too. They aren't "pure" enough to strengthen the Stone, they would actually weaken her. Since the dwarves refer to themselves as the Children of the Stone, it's essentially being rejected by a Mother "deity"
- Irredeemable children of criminals, do not exist in city records.
- Have no rights and are raised with no education
- Not fit to hold a caste, fight for their name in the Provings, or bear arms defending Orzammar from the Darkspawn.
- A casteless dwarf cannot work as a servant as it would insult the lowest in the Dwarven Hierarchy; the Servant Caste.
- They are seen as little better than animals, their faces branded at birth to mark them as the bastard children of the kingdom.
- Confined to Dust Town, the slums of Orzammar's abandoned districts.
- Sigrun, the casteless Legion of the Dead companion in Dragon Age: Awakenings, considers an Alienage to be "rather nice."
- Secretly considered useful by the Assembly as they provide the "economy with an excess of affordable labor."- From the confidential Assembly directive, regarding the proliferation of the carta.
- Intentional systematic lack of social advancement that encourages casteless dwarves to enlist in the Legion of the Dead, "The one accepted path to partial redemption.."
- Dwarves who enlist in the Legion are recorded as dead in the Shaparate's Memories. In the case of the Casteless, this is the first and only time they will be recorded; their bodies finally seen as valued sacrifices given in protection of Orzammar.
- Casteless criminal organizations such as the Carta are seen as threats to Orzammar; for providing the casteless with alternatives to joining the Legion and dying with honor.
- In the Ancient Age, during Paragon Caridins time, casteles dwarves, along with criminals, and political enemies, were taken by King Valtor and used to create golems for Orzammar's protection.
- Caste list dwarves were used in an 'unnamed age' by the dwarven overseer of Amgarrak thaig and a Tevinter mage to create a Golem made of stitched together flesh and bone, later known as a Harvester, when the request for iron were denied. Casteless dwarves were considered a worthy sacrifice as, "no one will miss them, and it's far better for them to die in the service of this great experiment then to continue living their worthless lives", – from ancient writings
- Nadezda, A crippled tasteless dwarf, had her kneecaps broken by a guard and was then forced to kneel in filth until the wound became infected.
- Due to the low birthrate of dwarves and the potential threat of dwarven extinction, the value of the female dwarf is often that of their ability to bear children. Dwarf noble female is referred to in their origin by their elder brother Trian Adeucan as "breeding flesh".
- The Origins dwarf commoner female is told by her mother that she would prostitute the Dwarf Commoner and her half-sister if it were up to her.
- Casteless Females who seek to improve their lot in life, a child will take on the caste of its same-sex parents, can become noble hunters – women who trained in seducing Nobles and siring children for them.
- Casteless females are groomed to become noble hunters by patrons who fund them and use them to secure a position among the higher house for themselves by claiming to be a distant relative. In order to increase their attractiveness to those of higher case, noble hunters trained in elocution, singing, Elven poetry, musical instruments, gossip, and partake in cosmetic enhancements such as gold Teeth. A successful noble Hunter can live with the noble houses of concubines for as long as the child lives, however they retain their casteless status, are still treated with scorn by noble females, and are likely to be social pariahs.
- Casteless males are unlikely to be pursued by noble females as they will only fire casteless children.
- Surface dwarves are all considered casteless and are not permitted to return to Orzammar.
- Casteless dwarves, like Sigran and Oghren, often have low self-esteem and consider themselves worthless and expendable.
- In the case where Bhelon is made King, his reforms allowed casteless to take arms against the Darkspawn in exchange for new freedoms. This permitted the Darkspawn line to be pushed back, and the retaking of a few thaigs. It is not specified in the Origins epilogue what those freedoms are and how those reforms differ from the existing laws regarding the Casteless who join the Legion of the dead.
How many castes do dwarves have and what are they called?
In order of their rank:
Noble caste
Warrior caste
Smith caste
Artisan caste
Miner caste
Merchant caste
Servant caste
Surface caste *
the casteless
* NOTE: the existence of a "surface caste" is a source of contention amongst the dwarves, and by and large the Shaperate would consider the surface dwarves to rank amongst the casteless. The growing number of high-ranking castes that voluntarily live on the surface however, makes the idea of them remaining permanent exiles a bit problematic.
Many of the castes have strata within them, and the rank of a specific member may be a source of considerable argument (a highly-placed member of the Smith caste might consider themselves above a lowly soldier, for instance) but overall the caste ranks are considered inviolate.

Proven:
- Dwarves can't wield magic due to their bloodline being so heavily exposed to lyrium.
- Dwarves have split into three main factions: Traditional dwarves who live beneath the surface, the Casteless who are too afraid/unconnected to go topside, and the surface dwarves who have embraced their exiled status and run Thedas's equivalent of the Mafia.
- The traditional underground dwarven race within Orzamar is definitely dying out due to Darkspawn exposure making them infertile, their tendency towards violence, and actual battles with the Darkspawn. I'm not sure about Surface Dwarf populations. and I'm not sure how finding Kal Sharok Kingdom will affect this.
- Dwarven religion centers around their Ancestors being elevated to Paragon status for doing something that helps the dwarven race as a whole. They also refer to "The Stone" as something their spirits return to.
- Shale, a companion of Origins, is from House Cadash. Making your Dwarven Inquisitor a descendent of Shale Cadash, the first dwarven woman to volunteer to become a golem to save her people against the Darkspawn.
- The closest to a Dwarven romance you can currently get is Scout Harding in DAI. There is an NPC one that promptly ends if you play a female Aeducan in Origins.
- You are not racegated in Origins, and can romance freely there. In Inquisition, depending on your gender, you have access to Scout Harding, Josephine, Sera, Blackwall, and Iron Bull.
- In Lothering, when a dwarf Warden asks where exactly Orzammar is and Alistair is like "What, you don't know?" Morrigan retorts, "(S)he's never been on the surface before, fool." If you ask Alistair if he minds that you're a dwarf, he'll say, "Of course not. Don't be ridiculous. If anything, I was wondering if I was too tall." Leliana kneels to kiss the Warden. Zevran
has different kisses/sex scenes for race and gender combos. Morrigan bonds with Brosca over having a crappy mother. - A dev said that, since surface Dwarfs haven't been in contact with lyrium, it might be possible for them to lose some of their magical immunity as generations go by.
- The chant doesn't mention Dwarves at all.
- Cadash was built upon an ancient settlement called Cad'halash. That settlement was destroyed by Kal-Sharok dwarves when they discovered that it gave shelter to elves fleeing the destruction of Arlathan, as
they wanted to cover all evidence of it so as not to jeopardize their alliance with the Tevinter Imperium. - If you put Alistair on the throne with a commoner as his mistress, then that means two different kings have a Brosca sister as a mistress.
- Similarly, if a noble dwarf puts Bhelen on the throne and deliberately doesn't harden Alistair, then chooses the boon to be Alistair's chancellor once he is king, two brothers have influence over both the Dwarven and the Fereldan empires.
- The age of majority for Warriors of Orzammar is 14. Seweryn made history by beating his father at a proving at the age of twelve
- Dwarves do not enter the Fade when they dream. This doesn't mean they are barred from the Fade (as is evident from the fact that a demon can force them in), they simply do not go there naturally.
There's a very good reason for why they don't enter the Fade. I'm not going to tell you what that is, but I will say that it has nothing to do with their resistance to magic. Rather the reverse: their resistance to magic comes from the fact that they don't enter the Fade -- which also allows them to mine dangerous lyrium better than other races would.
~David Gaider - Relevant when talking about Rica's and Felsi's babies, David Gaider says: the period of gestation in any story exists in direct correlation to the amount of hand-waving required by the plot, so ranging all the way from InstaBaby ™ to EternaBaby ™.
This is known as the "Baby in a Goldfish Bowl" Effect.
As for darkspawn, you saw their larval stage (or a mutated version thereof) in Awakening, actually. - In Inquisition, there is a lot of dwarven content you can chase down as a dwarf character: lots of stuff with the Carta and red Lyrium, Varric's quest, the entire Hissing Wastes, and history
peppered around everywhere like the Storm Coast. - After Adamant, talk to Dagna. Agree to help her and you'll get a war table mission. Once that's done, talk to her again and there will be some funny dialogue that has possible implications
regarding Dwarves. - A Brosca/Aeducan Warden is mentioned as a Paragon by the Carta Dwarves when you go to the Winter Palace.
- Morrigan's son, Keiran, has different comments depending on the race of the Inquisitor. He tells the Dwarf: "You can't be taller... not without the Titans".
- During the final fight with Corypheus when he's taunting Cadash, you have the star option of telling him you don't believe in gods.
- A Shaper is a dwarven archivist devoted to recording lore, history, and events in the stone. The memories are housed within a Shaperate, the primary source of knowledge in dwarven culture.
- A Codex Entry on the age of the Dwarven Ruins in the Hissing Wastes, "The Four Pillars" predates 700-1000 TE; meaning the ruins were created before the first Blight. Kal Repartha
- Unlike human and elf pairings, human and dwarf makes a half-human and half-dwarf.
- In the DC origin in DAO, there's a surface merchant who'll tell you that his "tattoo" is just painted on while he's in Orzammar, so you can do without the tattoo as a surfacer.
- The dwarves at the Winter Palace talk about a statue of the dwarf Warden if (s)he made
the final sacrifice. Harrowmont builds a small one, Bhelen a large one. - Jennifer Hepler was responsible for a lot of the dwarven content in Origins.
- For Skyhold customization, there is dwarf bed, dwarf windows, dwarf drapery, dwarf banners. There is no dwarf throne.
- It's not uncommon for surface dwarves to be Andrastian.
- The Orzammar dwarves speak the common tongue so they can trade with the surface, but Kal-Sharok does not have as much exposure to the surface so they retain their older ways of speaking.
- The vision for female dwarves (before they were omitted) in DA2 was inspired by the "roller derby gals."
- In Blackwall's very early, preliminary concept art, he was a Dwarf.
- You can flirt with Scout Harding. It's not male only, but you don't get them if you're locked in a romance, and they're not in her first few appearances.
- There are, according to Varric, tens of thousands of Dwarves living on the surface and managing an existence that's fine by them. Many of them still live by the kalna (for example, Bartrand) but there are
many who are just regular citizens like Harding. A Dwarf could be a blacksmith, a guard, a merchant, an artisan, etc. - Themageguy asked Patrick Weekes about whether dwarven Templars were stronger than human Templars due to their inherit connections to lyrium. The response was that they were still undecided on it.
- The only companion Bioware brought back based on requests was Oghren, which they ended up regretting on some level. His implementation didn't work out as well as they'd wanted or something so they're
not in the habit of bringing back characters based on fan requests now. - Dwarven Lore waiting to be found.

Unproven:
- List item 1
- The dwarven “ghosts” in Kal'Hirol are most likely memories the stone projects so their sacrifice wont be forgotten.
- Caridin did not make the Anvil of the Void by himself. It's likely he found some Titan technology or was guided by a Titan. His journal hints that he got the idea from whispers from the Ancestors.
About Kal'Sharok Dwarves, a post by Veeia.
Kal Sharok is fascinating. They were isolated for hundreds of years and their culture, which came from the same roots as Orzammar's, evolved in a different way. We don't know too many details, other than they don't have the caste system that Orzammar does, and the way they identify paragons is really different. There's such potential there for dwarven conflict esp since it was Orzammar that shut them out. Their lives must be very different, and much harder in a lot of ways.... and there are some theories that their exposure to the taint changed them, although idk how much I want that to be. (Ie I don't want them to feel too alien, but of course, it's not my story)
Plus, yes, since it's resurfaced, the only meaningful contact it has had with the outside world is with Tevinter.

The Dwarven belief system, a post by David Gaider:
Well, the dwarves don't give much credence to the idea of gods to begin with. To them, the Stone is the closest they come -- it is all around them, and when they say they are the Children of the Stone they mean that literally. Like some ancient myths in our world claim that humanity was formed from clay, the dwarves believe that they are quite literally born of the stone. When someone dies, their spirit returns to the stone. Those who are worthy make the stone stronger, while those who are unworthy make the stone weaker. An important concept in a world where the strength of the roof over your head determines not only your own surviveability but also that of your family and community. The most worthy, the Paragons, are those who add the most to the Stone when they die. Thus they are worthy of reverance, and held up as an ideal for other dwarves to aspire to.
Much like the elven myths, however, the dwarven notion of the Stone -- while anthropomorphized considerably into a sort-of deity, not surprising considering the idea that the rock around the dwarves gives them everything they exist in -- doesn't contradict the idea that a creator might have created the Stone itself. They just don't believe that. The Stone is right there, around them and supporting them, and some creator...? Who is such a being to the dwarves?

Dragon Age Dwarven Fairy Tales
How the Deepstalker Came to Be
A common tale said to be originally told by Paragon Ebryan, writer of Songs That Only Nugs Can Hear. Many dwarven tales for children involve deepstalkers.
In a time only the Stone remembers, a warrior named Gason won honor and glory for his house. He won a dozen Provings and defended his thaig against a legion of darkspawn. But though he was bold, Gason was also selfish and unkind, with a temper like spitting magma. He would rant and rage, mock and malign, until eventually Gason's friends turned their backs on him, his house crumbled, and he was cast into the Deep Roads.
There in the great darkness, Gason's anger roared up so bright it blinded him. He snatched up his sword and began to attack the carvings honoring noble Paragons that lined the walls. One! Two! With each blow of his sword, he cursed the Paragons and the Stone Herself in a voice that echoed from one end of the Deep Roads to the other.
But the Stone always hears the voices of Her children, for good or for ill. As the carvings fell in ruins at Gason's feet, each chunk of wood uncoiled, becoming a horrid creature with a maw full of teeth. One! Two! Hundreds rose and surrounded Gason in a pack, devouring him bite by bite before scattering into the dark.
The creatures, which we call tezpadam, stalk the Deep Roads to this day. They can curl of like tiny stones, waiting to pounce upon trespassers as they pounced upon Gason so long ago. And that's why you're not to play noisy games near the entrance to the Deep Roads. They just might toggle you up too.

Veata, Tezpadam!
A poem performed in singsong style for dwarven toddlers.
Veata tezpadam translates to "Stop, deepstalker!" in the common tongue.
Mindless he wanders, all unwary,
Where small dwarven children should not tarry.
Veata, Tezpadam!
Your eyes are shining, bright and merry.
The quarters' light distant and dim,
Here in the cave he's wandered in.
Veata, Tezpadam!
How quick you are on silent limb.
Small hands collide with cavern wall.
Upon the ground, a missing ball.
Veata, Tezpadam!
Your brothers hear the high-pitched call.
He turns to see they've circled round,
All grinning at his wimming sound.
Veata, Tezpadam!
What becomes of you who found?
Within the quarter, heard no more
Are songs behind the nursery door.
Veata, Tezpadam!
Asleep upon the cavern floor.
Mindless he wanders, all unwary,
Where small dwarven children should not tarry.
Veata, Tezpadam!
Your eyes are shining, bright and merry.

Annnnnd I've got a fun treat for this thread since I know you guys love quotes and such! I used a save editor during Halamshiral and ran the character through all possible outcomes from A Paragon of Her Kind. The reason why we don't hear anything about the anvil or Branka is because our dwarf warden takes priority over Branka/Caridin. The dwarves will only give out information on one paragon. So to hear about Branka, you'd need to have a non-dwarf warden import.I knew Harrowmont was a weak king, but wow, total insincerity towards Aeducan. (WTF, man. Where's the gratitude! I am coming back for you, I swear it.)

@brain -- to answer your bolded question, sadly, no, Bhelen says nothing when you do the bait-and-switch. Not even a "well-played, sister/brother, well-played." I played a game like that once, was disappointed, and then hated the idea of Harrowmont thinking Aeducan was stabbing him in the back instead of treating him like a family friend. So my next replay, I went back to just siding with him from the get-go.
HOWEVER -- there is a bait-and-switch dialogue that IS available, but it's not widely known because there are too many conditions needed to make it fire (such as agreeing to work for Harrowmont first and then switching to Bhelen AND having Wynne in your party).

Specializations, including Mage even though a Dwarf can't be a mage:
Chibi Elemental, on 28 Nov 2014 - 3:23 PM, said:
just for people curious about different class and spec combos I have actualy come up with a rather helpful list that I'll post here
each specialisation can be classified as defensive, offessive, or balanced
For rogue,
offense, Assassin
your offensive based spec is Assassin and can work well with both daggers and archery, as the activates generally work around your weapon of choice, while they do have some nice defensive moves they are almost exclusivly geared toward being offense.
Defensive, Tempest
I know what your thinking but chibi tempest is all about doing tons of damage quickly!? Well you are right but tempest is more focused around using your tonics in the correct order according to what is going on, and they also have tonics that increase your defense to were even in nightmare you take significantly less damage in comparison to other rogues indeed you even taunt all the enemies around you and gain a huge defensive bonus. These rogues are ment to be in the thick of the fight and spitting in the enemies eyes. And thus daggers are more suited for this spec not saying an archer can find ways to make the spec work but dagger rogue will get the most use out of all of the abilities in the tree.
Balance, Artificer
Artificer has a great balance of offensive and defensive capabilities from setting up traps mines and even a handy get out of jail free card. Bows work best with this specilationion as it provides handy escapes and tools to keep the enemy at bay, but why is it balanced you say? Well you can really use any of the abilities defensivly or offensivly where as tempest tends to just make you inharently tanky artificer does not, cc damage and teleports are what make this class great, now a dagger rogue can make great use of artificer in used smart, like fallback plan on mines spike trap fire mine and ice mine you can isolate and deal large ammounts of damage to a single target if prepared properly.
Warrior.
Offense, reaver
This should be obvious all of reavers abilities are about augmenting your ability to just murder everything around you, you are a killing machine and all of it is there to make you scary and agressive. while sword and board can make great use of this spec twohanders is where you will shine as the extra damage they deal is significant and devour will allow you to swing that damage stick almost as fast as a duel wield rogue though do stalk up on regen pots and regen grenades your gonna need them if you wish to spam that attack.
Defensive, Champion
Champion allows you to control the battlefield and also make you nearly unkillable if applied correctly, sword and board give you great surviability but a twohander build is possible in combination with its focus ability which is a fantastic counter attack focus. Your main focus is to be the best tank you can be while holding enemies attention for as long as you can.
Balance, Templar
Templar gets a great array of offensive and defensive party buffing capabilities, you can buff everyones damage, deal damage and cc oponents especially mages. demons and magical creatures. Your focus on the battlefield should be that of buffing and targeting those of the magically inclined. A great speck for either sword and board or even twohanded warriors check it out you may find you enjoying making your whole party into a steam rolling engine of destruction.
Mage
Offensive, necromancer
Rift mage can make a case for being the offensive but really in my opinion necro really takes the cake here as thier whole focus is on dots dots and moar dots that then turn into minions to do well more damage and to boot its all spirit damage! the real stratagy here is that you either as your other abilities focus on creating more panic with fire which then creates more damage for your necromancy spells which are most likely stacked on that archer or assasin you want to burn down quickly so they explode and then cuase others to well explode. Or team it up with lightning or cold to add in more cround control while your necro dots kill your target.
defensive, Knight enchanter
All off knight enchanters abilities are designed around improving barriers or making you harder to hit or even find on the battlefield, even the spirit blade has a defensive mechanic where you can hit projectiles to prevent and in turn send damage back to your enemies, I havn't myself played much of this spec and really want to find a build I find fun, it is powerful just not one of my personal favorites.
Balance, Rift mage
This class can deal serious damage however its primary focus is actually crowd control, the damage is just an added benefit, really that is all there is to say about this speck you can pull enemies together, throw stone fits at them knock them all down lots of cool field control and perhaps one of the more fun specs I have played in the game and really simple to get into. Just point click and watch things happen.
Hope that really helps all of you in your character planning also I am always willing to help with character builds and ideas as well as theory crafting

Theory about the naming of Dwarven Cities:
EmperorSahlertz Posted 04 December 2014 - 09:56 AM
it would seem that the major cities of the Dwarves all have the prefix "Kal-" followed by a moniker, while the smaller towns and outposts are just one word.
City Examples: Kal-Sharok, Kal-Hirol, Kal-Barosh.
Town and outpost examples: Orzammar*, Amgarrak, Gwaren.
*Orzammar is the odd-one-out here, since it started out as an outpost but since grew to be the second largest Dwarven city.
But it would seem that "Kal-" followed by the name of the ruling family of the Thaig is a common naming policy of the Dwarves.
DA Dwarves revere family and tradition, hence the tendency to name their thaigs after the ruling/founding families.
