Not to flex about it, but I knew this for about 2 years thanks to VNN. Most people had no clue apparently. It's a VR game and I don't care for VR. Even if I had the money to buy one, I wouldn't. It's the safest Valve ever went with this franchise and also it's developed to kickstart future VR projects probably. Remember they've been dicking around with VR for AGES now. So while EPIC twiddles their thumbs with their cash and call out Valve for MUH GREED, Valve spend the money on experimental projects and what not.

I loved D:OS2 and, unless Larian messes up, I'm likely to get BG3 at release. But this, like other Kickstarter board games, looks overpriced, overproduced, and overcomplicated. I think they missed the opportunity to make a much more affordable, official rulebook for a tabletop Divinity RPG. But I wish them the best, and hopefully this project will go smoother than Fallen Heroes. Although I'm starting to get a little grumpy since every time I get a notification from them I am excited until I realize it's got nothing to do with BG3.

So here it is, the new HL game. Yes it's a prequel of HL2, and yes it's VR only. Talk about niche audiences. But hey, there's that Geoff interview they did (not gonna link the video, is just 20 minutes of them talking) and they've said literally the whole point of the game is being able to do mundane stuff in VR. Like open doors, dick around with objects, reload, etc. It wouldn't be the same without VR. Still, niche AF. Imagine being me, waiting for 12 years for a new HL game and they do announce it in the end... and it's VR

Tho the threshold to cross to install Steam wasn't a big hardware investment.

Imagine being me, waiting for 12 years for a new HL game and they do announce it in the end... and it's VR No way in hell I am going to invest in a VR set just to play the game. Don't get me wrong - I am a huge fan of Half Life. I played the first game the moment it was released. It was one of the games that are a part of my earlier game experiences (Together with the first BBC-B Computer based Elite, The first Unreal, Quake2 and so on), and this version looks great.
I would love to play this game. But there is a big hurdle to overcome.
Those VR head sets are far too expensive (and the Steam hardware version is certainly far beyond my financial reach). Maybe my computer would be able to handle the game (i7-3770, 16Gb 1866MHz RAM, GTX 10170Ti), but an Valve VR kit will cost me €1079! Even the cheaper VR kits are way too expensive for my budget. I would really like to play this game, but I simply cannot afford it (and don't give me that crap about cheap second hand stuff - If everybody suddenly wants a second hand because of this game, prices will go sky-high in no time).
Why they made the game VR-only is beyond my grasp. I can only guess Valve/Steam desperately want to sell their VR hardware stuff. However you look at it - They will certainly disappoint a whole mass of people that would love to play this Half-Life game but (just like me) simply cannot afford all that expensive stuff. I only can imagine there will be a "normal" version down the line at some time, but if they do that and when is everybody's guess.

No there won't be. They were very specific about it, and from what I know from years ago they never intended to make it a normal game. The game is built around the VR concept, the pacing, the stuff you do. You saw in the trailer how the character was solving a puzzle with one hand and shooting with the other, knocking around stuff on a shelf to find ammo to reload a gun, while a soldier is just about to get you. You simplify that to work on KB&M / controller and the whole point of the experience is lost. Think about any game you saw in VR, sure you can make it as a non-VR game also, but the point of the game gets lost. It is a bit of selling VR stuff, but the reality isn't that tin foil hat related. They just wanted to do a VR AAA game, and Half life was the choice (because fuck me). I get where they are going, they wanted to innovate, they wanted to create one of the first 3A big budget VR games in the market, something that is not a gimmick nor a 3 hour demo experience. But I'm super disappointed (I've been for a while, because I've known this for a while) that of all games, they had to choose this one specifically. A franchise everyone thought dead and now they revive it, but the price is a VR set? Give me a break. I've seen on the internet comments like, "Well, you can get a used VR set for like 500 dollars" or "The VR library desperately needs AAA titles" . First, I can't get shite for that money, and even if I could, why should I? I don't like VR. Second, I agree, but why it had to be HL? Why you gotta gate this of all games behind a VR wall? As I've said, I get what they are trying to do, but I wish they picked a different IP. Moving on, It's said they scrapped this very year a massive amount of the story and redone it because they were not happy with the quality. Which is why the march 2020 release window sounds a bit optimistic. Chances are, it's getting delayed. In fact, it was reported the game was going to launch this very year, not the next. I am confident the game is gonna be pretty damn good. Both story and mechanics wise. But I hope they know the reach they're getting isn't gonna be fantastic when it's aimed only at the few who like or can afford VR. If this game does well (which it should), so long as Valve temper their expectations based on what it is, it might open the door for future normal HL games. After all, this isn't a sequel, it's a safe approach to the franchise after being on ice for more than a decade.

Not really news related, but I've found it bizarre. Game currently has the most beneficial regional pricing I've seen in my life, it's a 60 dollar game, right?. It costs 600 ARS which as it stands, it's around 10 US dollars. I'm tempted to buy it just for giggles, event though I don't have VR nor will I (probably) ever. Must be a mistake that Valve will rectify soon enough. But hey, if you already bought it, they can't take it away from you... Their (massive) loss.

VR is disappointing now only because it's currently not as good as non-VR gaming.
But if they made Half Life with Ready Player One tech, it'd be a different story

A man in China spent more than $1.4 million, developing his character in the Chinese MMORPG Justice Online. As if that in itself was not bizarre enough, the man’s friend sold the avatar to someone else for $552, and the original owner had to pay another $13,000 to get it back.
The South China Morning Post reports the unnamed player “loaned” the character to his friend. The supposed “friend” (now former presumably) then tried to sell it back to him for 388,000 yuan ($55,138).
When the original owner did not want to fork up the dough to get his avatar back, the buddy turned around and sold it on the game’s marketplace, hosted by NetEase, for 3,888 yuan ($552). He attributed the low price as a typo caused by a long session of gaming, but before he had time to retract the offer, someone has already snagged it.
The lesson here is: if you have a digital asset that you care about, don’t lend it out, even to a friend. More importantly, don’t spend a million dollars on your game characters, people. You’re the reason microtransactions are out of control in the industry.www.techspot.com/news/82921-man-china-ordered-pay-13000-get-14-million.htmlNetease ... the company partnering with Blizzard to release games in China. The one doing Diablo Immortal. How comforting.

Wasteland 2 was a super fun game. It has quite a bit of "you gotta know what works and what doesn't" syndrome to it, skill-gun-mechanic based, which is kind of unfortunate, but the game itself is really good IMO. Definitely recommend it if anyone is into turn based isometric games.
