A first look at the Story space in Anthem, the characters you'll meet, and the systems that'll be available while you're exploring Fort Tarsis.

Finally! A lot to unpack in there. - Sheer size of the Fort. Bigger than Skyhold, might be as big as the Citadel.
- Top-down map looks like a tabletop RPG mapping tool (that's a good thing!)
- Areas get unlocked in the Fort.
- Helios and Antheum as two other locations (this might be old news)
- Alliance "friends" coop weeklies, Dailies and "regular?" Weeklies
- Factionalism and political tension - Sentinels vs. Freelancers
- Cortex (lore) to collect
- Fort changes over time; removal of clutter, flooding
- A bar to fight in
- Merchants and quest givers

So the conversation with Zoe: I swear that sounds like Katy Townsend (Suvi from MEA). Anyone else think/hope?
That was a huge character background info dump, much faster than NPC backgrounds are revealed compared to DA or ME. Which suggests to me that they may have streamlined NPC character development for the sake of the non-SP players getting a big dose of story for the first time. Easing them in, so to speak. If true, I'm a bit divided. I'm saddened if character development is spoonfed and uncomplicated, just the facts mam, and make it snappy. But I'm also philosophical that it's probably the right call, given the broader player base they are going after.

Okay... I'll admit this is one of my worries - the story and character interaction we expect from BioWare games. I'll be a realist and say this is by no means a guarantee that the whole of it will live up to Mass Effect, Dragon Age or KOTOR. Nevertheless, this video is a good sign. Anyone who says otherwise without a compelling argument... I'll have to doubt them. EDIT: So the conversation with Zoe: I swear that sounds like Katy Townsend (Suvi from MEA). Anyone else think/hope? It does sound like her, but I remember reading that the voice cast for Anthem is all-new, no old names. Then again, I've heard people say that M!Freelancer's voice sounds like Ray Chase, and if I'm not mistaken, he voiced Evfra in Andromeda. So... could be.

OK, so this is coming from a guy who likes to pew-pew stuff as much as he likes a good narrative: When Anthem was first announced in 2017, I was highly skeptical that BioWare would be adding much in the way of story or character interactions at all. Thankfully, I've been proven wrong. Even if interactions have been streamlined, BioWare did choose to make Anthem a looter-shooter kind of game (which I will never play because my PC can't run higher than last-gen games and I'm too effin' poor to afford a console or a new PC ), and given the kind of game we got... streamlined interactions are better than no interactions at all. In fact, I'm starting to think that they're focusing primarily on story and character interactions for every game. Especially if they decide to branch into other genres, which I hope they don't.

Fort Tarsis looks a lot emptier than the original E3 trailer, which isn't surprising since if they had kept that density of NPCs it would've been a pain to just walk around, running into people left and right. Then again, I suppose more NPCs can show up as the fort evolves over time. The NPCs that are present seem awfully static, though. It kind of gives the impression that the fort is occupied but not lived-in.
It also looks like they did a generally good job of hand-keying facial animations for even the lower-tier convos (which I assume these are). The convo with Propsero especially had some nice facial touches that accentuated what he was saying.
On the hand, something about some of the NPC faces just seems off, specifically Zoe and the Sentinel commander. When I look at them, I get the distinct feeling that I'm not looking at a real human face, unlike with e.g. Prospero, Tassyn, or Owen. I can't put my finger on exactly what's wrong, but I've watched the video multiple times now and can't shake that feeling.

Guessing what this means could be fun... I think this might be Anthems version of a clan system. The way it has a leveling system to it kinda reminds me of the Clan system from Destiny. As you level up your clan, you get relatively small bonuses (like increased resources). Anthem could be trying to deliver a similar system, since it says it needs you to add friends to your list. I'm guessing the Weekly contributor bonus applies to the current player, and you will receive an end-of-week payout. The size of the payout would be dependent upon how much you contributed for the clan/Alliance. All guesses on my part, of course.

I suspect they are technically just fine, but these days we live in the uncanny valley. Yeah, I figured it was that. It's just weird that it triggers for me on some NPCs but not others. Another thing I forgot to mention in my original post was that the VA for the freelancer rubs me the wrong way. Not all the time, just specifically when he's making the flippant remarks. It just feels awkward and out of place. Maybe the writing is partially to blame for this, because for some of those lines the other NPC he's talking to just does not react at all and/or remains super serious (this is basically the entire Sentinel convo), which just turns it into one of those moments where you tell a joke that doesn't land, everybody's just staring at you, and you want the earth to swallow you whole because that's the only dignified option left for you to be extricated from that situation...I'm sure everyone experiences those all the time...right?

Same, though I thought they were all a bit off, compared to DAI and, say, GoW. Zoe's was definitely the most off. But I'm playing RDR2 right now and some of the NPCs in that game are just as much off. Let's face it, after MEA we're hypersensitized to facial animation quality. I for one have scrutinized every game I've played since MEA for this flaw. Some games are better than others, that's for sure. RDR2 definitely has some offputting facial animations, but not so bad that I hate the game or are even distracted by it. To me, it's becoming kind of like the occasional pop-in or low-res texture in any game, a flaw, but not a major one.

I have similar problems with some of the Dalish Accents in Dragon Age. Note to other: am from Northern Ireland

It kind of gives the impression that the fort is occupied but not lived-in. NPC density, especially around the merchants, might be time of day sensitive (Anthem has a day/night cycle), there might also be mission sensitive event as well (we actually have seen one that cause NPCs like Zoe to not be at the Forge). There is probably a settings related to it to improve performance as well, especially on consoles. Doesn't quite sound like Katy Townsend to me, but she seems to have a Scottish accent too. Most of the NPCs seen in the video seems to be characters like the merchants/crafters in Haven/Skyhold (people like Aidan or Minaeve), those also had fast background info dumping in DAI. Textures look dated and the conversations are giving me Andromeda vibes. I was hoping that Bioware was going to take major strides in improving their dialogue but it feels so off putting.

I actually really enjoyed this Tarsis vid. To quote the Dark Lord of the Sith, "Impressive. Most impressive." And I'm actually really excited to play this. More and more, I'm counting down the days till Launch....I can totally see myself bingeing for the first couple of days to try and explore every nook and cranny of both the Fort and the World. BUt i have to bear in mind that I don't want to finish the game too early....I'm definitely in this one for the long haul, but I want to enjoy the adventure for sure.

I had to go back and rewatch, because I didn't remember Zoe, Prospero, or Captain Sentinel wearing hats. And they don't. Neither does Owen or Haluk. But what I think you mean is that no one has long hair. They either have short hair, are bald, or are wearing a head covering of some type. And yeah, that probably is because modeling long hair is hard and they didn't want to invest effort in that.

That video shouldn't have the word "exploration" in it, because most of the vid was just listening to dialogue from NPCs. Then we got 1 minute of exploration at the end of the footage which added no real meaningful information.
Dialogue sounds okay, choices are crap, graphics look good. There's items to find and customary Bioware banter. That it? Okay then ...

As in an exploratory study, not an in-depth study?
