To be clear this has mostly come out of the Anthem subreddit. But it is important since that is where many new fans are likely to go to if they're interested in this game.
The behavior I've seen there has been extremely disappointing to say the least. People who have any serious concerns, particularly when it comes to bioware staples like story and characters, are being ridiculed and told off constantly. Like how dare they want to enjoy the game in a way that's different then the typical shooter crowd. Anything that doesn't involved how to kill shit better in the game is treated as crap and a waste of time. And the mods only seem to be encouraging this behavior as they are quick to censor and remove threads that doesn't follow their fanboi hive mind.
They are actively pushing away and abusing new potential fans just because they aren't part of the new hardcore shooter dude-bro mentality that's become so pervasive there.
I really want to love this game, but the people I've met make that extremely hard. Seriously I'm desperate here. I just want to be a part of a fan base that makes this game worth playing. I want to be a member of a decent community of people who are at least nice to each other.
So many people like me are on the fence, ready to put down hard earned money on a pre-order, and just need a little positive push in the right direction. So why is even this much so difficult for this fan base?

I want to be a member of a decent community of people who are at least nice to each other. Interesting points, OP. Depends on the community I guess. The Anthem subreddit does appear to be quite a hyped up place. That's not to say we can't be hyped up here, but skeptics and fans with a BioWare background (or not) can certainly have a grumble and express concerns and it's abolutely ok to discuss (which we also have sub-boards for) lore, characters and story. To my mind, it's about having enough respect to allow a wide range of opinion and focus. We have occasionally banhammered people who were so aggressive against the game and so aggressive in favor of the game to make their contributions impossible, but they were the exceptions.

Hey, caios! I would consider myself a "good" person in the Anthem playerbase! I've pre-ordered on PS4 at the moment (hard choice between that and Xbox, as my friend who is considering buying plays on PS4 but Xbox is my main) and am excited for the VIP demo next Friday! I even took off of work! In general I would say Reddit is a bad place for fans of things. It seems to be where the worst of the people who are "fans" of things I enjoy congregate to come up with conspiracy theories and spew vitriole and bile. Especially things like Critical Role, Game Theory, etc. Why are people so awful!? Anyway, I know there are some detractors on these forums as well, but I think in general once the game gets going and we have more threads that are about the game itself and less about "fears and hopes" and speculation, those detractors will mostly stay to the opinion threads instead of gameplay/story threads. Hopefully. If not, there's always the mute button, which I have made use of more recently. In general, I would say BSN is a community of Bioware fans who enjoy the story elements as well as getting the most out of combat, but never to an extreme as you describe on Reddit. I would say interact with people on here, join the BSN "Clan" when it is a thing on Anthem, and enjoy! Find those here that share your interests and try as best to ignore the haters. You only need a handful of good people to make the game a good experience for you! If you care to add me, my gamertag is MaximusArael020 on both PSN and Xbox Live. If you play on PC, I can't really help you, but I'm sure others will step up! The internet can be a wasteland of hate and panic. It's always nice to find an oasis of people like those I've met on BSN.

People who have any serious concerns, particularly when it comes to bioware staples like story and characters, are being ridiculed and told off constantly. Well, those two have been, to my mind, the least developed aspects of Anthem in the marketing campaign so far. If people are really hyped about the game, they seldom want to be reminded about its potential pitfalls. Furthermore, we don't really have enough material to go on beyond speculation. Anthem is a different beast than previous BioWare games, and the way they've gone about promoting it makes it only natural that it would appeal to players of similar titles, such as Destiny, a game that is favoured for its gameplay, not for its story. It's likely then that those fans are monopolizing the conversation, at least on reddit. Why would you pre-order at this point given your concerns about story and characters, not to mention your reservations about the fanbase? What kind of "positive push" do you require?

I don't understand. The fanbase hasn't even built itself yet, because the game isn't out and besides some alpha gameplay no one has gotten his fingers on the game yet. So the ones who are hyped now might not be the ones who end up being fans of Anthem and vice versa. So why not just play the demo and see whether you like the game - and become a fan - or not? IMO there is nothing to worry about yet.
And going by the ME3MP community, you will find plenty of cool and friendly - or how you call it: good - fans of the game in case you end up liking it.

Thanks for the kind responses. To answer your question directly, OdanUrr , I think what people on the fence are looking for in terms of a positive push will vary from person to person. For me personally it basically comes down to two things. Firstly, as a fan of Bioware of old, I want to know that there's worthwhile story and character development to sink my figurative teeth into. It may not be Mass Effect level all the time, but even SWTOR had really good stories and characters (for the most part) in a massively multiplayer platform, so clearly this is something they're capable of. However this is something that they really fell flat with in ME: Andromeda (IMO). So some assurances that Bioware is putting more care and attention to this hallmark of their games like they've done in the past - even if it's not with the same level of complexity - would go a long way. Secondly, as great as this game might be, it's going to get old fast if there aren't good people to play with. The multiplayer platform it uses, even if playing solo is a valid option, really requires a good community of people to play with to make the game shine. Which is why it's so disheartening and disappointing when I see the sort of negative behaviors that I mentioned in my initial post.

That subreddit was created by Destiny and The Division players. To them story and characters is very secondary to killing stuff fast, loot and builds.

I'd say this @carlos. Are you going to be trying the Open Demo, Feb 1st? I think that will really help. I can't talk about the brief story content I experienced in the closed alpha, but I will say I'm very happy with my pre-order. And there are some wonderful people hanging out on BSN to play with...

Well, Anthem releases February 22nd, so there's still time for BioWare to put out more trailers and videos emphasizing this aspect. Furthermore, as others have mentioned, there's the demo releasing February 1st, what might give you a better idea of what the game is all about. If that's still not enough, you can always wait for reviews after release.

To be clear this has mostly come out of the Anthem subreddit. But it is important since that is where many new fans are likely to go to if they're interested in this game. By "this", you mean antagonizing people who want to play traditional Bioware-style games? Or do you mean "good people"? Wow. There's a word I want to use to describe that diatribe that starts with a "b" and ends with "hurt", but I won't, since I want to keep this civil. First of all, I've been reading the Reddit sub every day since the E3 2018 reveal. Your characterization of that sub is waaaaaaay off base. Second, I've seen some of the posts you refer to. Talk about a chip on the shoulder! Hardcore traditional Bioware fans come into the sub, more or less ignorant of the sense of the community, and post something with a very entitled attitude, demanding that Bioware go back to doing what they prefer. Is it any wonder they get shit on by the sub, that in large part has never heard of Bioware before Anthem? Worse, such posts don't tend to acknowledge the things that Bioware has done in Anthem to provide something of interest to traditional fans. Like the entire "My Story" design. Such posts come across as strident and demanding without any appreciation for the consideration Bioware has shown to traditional fans. You might want to look in a mirror, because you're making me embarrassed to be a traditional Bioware fan myself. You not representing us at our best. You might try embracing these new fans and trying to understand what motivates them and how Anthem is designed to get them excited. You might try joining in that enthusiasm and explaining how Bioware's strengths in character and story are going to make this loot shooter so much better than the competition. You might try embracing a new game-type that you might not have tried before. Be an ambassador and share what you love about previous Bioware games, instead of being someone who comes across as wanting to take things away from the loot shooter crowd. But ultimately, if it's not the game-type for you, straight up, that's fine. Just move on, leave the Anthem subs alone, and understand that Bioware is going after a much larger and more lucrative player base, and if that doesn't include you, there's #TheDreadWolfRising for you in the future. Not every game Bioware makes has to be for you. Making one game that's not for you does not mean you've been abandoned forever.

1. Bioware is too big to keep making the types of game that it is known for. Narrative based single player games should really be a niche for medium sized company, who doesnt have hundreds of millions in budgets or have ridiulous sales goal. It cant afford not to go after the widest slice of audience with a a lowest common denominator of a game. If ran Bioware i wouldnt make another single player rpg.
2. People who like the old style of bioware games are probably of an older age like me, and frankly we got too much other shit that competes for our attention to keep Bioware financially aflot. It just wouldnt make sense for them to keep catering to the same fan base forever.

People who post on Bioware boards are usually fanatics. Not always, but I've seen a lot of it.
There are those that believe Bioware can do no wrong. Which is false, everyone has hiccups.
Then there are those that are dripping with derision. Absolutely bashing anything they can about a game.
The forum side of the gaming community can get downright ugly sometimes. Can't we all accept that a game that I may love, you may not?
I'm praying Anthem is a solid game. I need it to be, because I need my Bioware fix.

Reddit is an echo chamber by design. Why do you think you can downvote posts to the bottom of the page, and negative comments are hidden from sight? So if you go to reddit you should be prepared for echo-chambery type behaviour, because that's what it was obviously built for.

In the end, this will be less of do I want to support Bioware and more of do I want to support EA. The follow up question would be, what jas Bioware/EA done to ensure us that we have NOT been abandoned?

I do apologize, but whenever I see this thread's title, this starts running around in my head... Wind-blown big hair, head tosses, pouty down-looks … and whips! …
What's not to like?
We're talking about the BSN Anthem fanbase, aren't we?
