Without reference to content or depth, here's a quick rundown of the structure of the main quest lines of some recent Bioware SP games and how I think the structure of the Anthem critpath will compare, based on the hints and confirmations Bioware has given so far.
ME3: Considering only the Priority missions, this structure is linear, with no branching.
DAI: Mostly linear, with a single either-or branch that locks the untaken branch out of the playthrough.
MEA: Starts linear, but then a number of Priority-Ops are unlocked that can be done in any order, some unlocking further Priority-Ops. Once all the ops of a loosely grouped "act" are completed, the next Priority-Op in linear sequence is unlocked. Then the final "act" is linear.
Given what's been said about the critpath story for Anthem, good guys vs. the Dominion, my guess is that the structure will be most like ME3, entirely linear. It may have some degrees of freedom in the order certain "middle act" missions are done in, but since everyone in the shared world has to end up in the same elder game state, there won't be any branching and certainly no content locked behind an untaken branch choice.
What do you think?

There's always going to be a linear path that some players will bomb through on the quest for endgame. Hopefully there's going to be enough branching, and dynamic freeplay events to stretch it out a bit, and delay the inevitable "There's nothing else to do!" complaints. Basically, I'm hoping for more MEA than ME3, and a stretched out crit path.

From what we've heard thus far, I'm going to guess that the critical story path is as linear as can be. Meanwhile agent contracts will take over the role of side quests. There will be no branching - the devs have basically said as much. Any "choices" you get to make with regards to story will be confined to Fort Tarsis and will likely only involve your interactions and relationships with the story NPCs.

"There's nothing else to do!" complaints. I expect to see these cropping up after the first week or two.
I'm not hating either. I am really excited for Anthem, I think it is going to be fun co-op game. I just think I might have slightly different expectations than some.
Much of the noise surrounding the game will be from players going at Anthem 16 - 20 hours per day. Those kind of players can clear a lot of content in a week or two.

I fully anticipate the story will be wholly linear...only broken up with side quests and free play as the player deems. I expect little deviation regardless of "choices" and interactions with crew and Fort Tarsis personnel to how things play out. I would love to be wrong but I've learn to set my expectations low with Bio over the past few iterations of games.
