I assume this has been done with Bioware's consent seeing as Dragon Age is a trademark and permission is normally needed for anything using their game world, particularly as there are actual Bioware resources used in this. So could this be the strategy game they were asking about previously? After all they just wanted to gauge interest, possibly in order to determine whether they should allow this mod, rather than intending doing anything specifically themselves.

On a lore note, why do they have ships, the Incaensorborium, that were used first against the elven navy? I know that Maryden's song spoke of Arlathan being sunk beneath the ocean waves but I assumed that actually referred to what happened when Solas raised the Veil. Everything previously suggested the war between Tevinter and the enclave of elves in Arlathan Forest took place on dry land. In fact that has been no ancient iconography or images to suggest the ancient elves even had ships. So is this something that the developers of this mod made up for themselves or have Bioware actually changed tack on this bit of history?

So could this be the strategy game they were asking about previously? This is a mod for a completely different game, so no. After all they just wanted to gauge interest, possibly in order to determine whether they should allow this mod, rather than intending doing anything specifically themselves. If they had asked permission formally, the answer most likely would have been, "No." It's one thing for Bioware to turn a blind and be permissive, but they would have to answer a formal request, for a whole host of legal reasons, such as being required to defend trademark, wanting to preserve the option of making their own official strategy game, and so forth. Your other questions about factions and units and lore can be answered by the format of the game itself. From the cursory looking I did on the mod's page, it seems like that game has many more units and factions available for players to use than make up the Dragon Age mythos, or at least what we've been exposed to to date; the creator even mentions creating new unique ones just for this mod. So, they're bending things a bit to fit the format of the game in which the mod is based.

This is a mod for a completely different game, so no.
I was well aware this was a mod for a different game (I'm not stupid) but at the same time it is using actual Bioware images from the game and associated lore books. Whilst they might feel that turning a blind eye would allow them some free advertising, I'd have thought it unlikely. This is not like someone developing a mod for using with their game. This is someone using their images and trademark resources for a completely different game. This is why I suggested that maybe it had been done with their permission.
Thus, my second question was asked on the assumption that permission had been granted. Naturally if Bioware were not involved then the question is irrelevant.

Oooh interesting.
I was so hoping for that CK2 mod to come out for DA, but sadly it never materialised.
I doubt there's that much crossover between TW and DA fans, but I'm one of them and certainly raring to give this a go
Good luck!

Fascinating. Looks like a reason to buy Medieval II: Total War... once they're closer to release with the mod.

The Tevinter ships themselves are modified versions (i.e. different number of soldiers and defense) of the vanilla M2TW ships. The lore of the Tevinter ships in the description cards? It's a mix of previous established official lore and headcannon (cannon, get it? ) in order to justify Tevinter military might in the campaign and battle maps (except cannons are replaced with mages in the description). You CAN'T 100% represent the lore of Dragon Age the games and books in a TW game, especially M2TW. M2TW has the best mod support (unlike the newer installations), and because it is an older game low-end PCs can play it (i.e. mods for this game are very popular, like the LoTR Third-Age mod, or the Warhammer mod, or the Elder Scrolls mod, or the Gothic mod, or the etc, etc, etc.). It's like asking a movie director to represent the entire book, or game developers to represent entire libraries of obscure lore 100% correct. Some things are lost it translation. The mod is still in development, so if there are ideas and problems, you can log-in and discuss each issue with the creators of the mod. Bioware has given their blessing, as far as I know, to this mod, because it doesn't use official resources (i.e. copy and paste meshes and textures), but rather the mod creators create the models, meshes and textures from scratch (ala the Elder Scrolls mod). What you might think is copy-pasted in-game armors and other stuff is actually hand-made, with official Total War modding tools. Also, MODDB doesn't allow such mods for Total War on its servers without the consent of all parties when it comes to copyright stuff (both from CA and the developers/creators of the other lore, like Bethesda, Bioware, and New Line Cinema, or whoever made the LoTR movies). The mod creators are not allowed to ask for money (Patreon or stuff like that), but they can ask for help and resources from other TW mods (like some elven and dwarven face textures, some armors from other mods for the bandits and mercenaries, etc.). They can ask for help from experienced modders when it comes to scripts, textures, meshes, maps, battle and campaign behavior, lore, translations, etc. 10% of armors look like Bioware in-game armors because they are modelled from those armors, but the rest are guesswork. We never saw Nevarra, Antiva, Anderfells, other Marcher city-states besides Kirkwall and Starkhaven, Qunari or Tevinter represented in either games, books or comics, yet, but they try to figure things out. For example the Nevarran troops, while looking awesome, and having official insignia on them, are 100% pure headcannon. The same for the lack of unnamed forts and castles, since the official Thedas map doesn't have enough choke-points, settlements, bridges and land-bridges to the player the satisfaction of conquering the map, and giving the AI factions a fighting chance against the player and other AI factions (vanilla AI is notoriously silly). Diplomacy and finance scripts will be used to balance some factions since it would be odd to see, for example, the Grey Wardens attacking the Anderfels, and allying with the Darkspawn (who most likely won't even have diplomats, and won't be able to be "talked" to). For those scared that such a mod would be disappointing, then take a look at the other mods listed by me, especially the Elder Scrolls mod, who is famous for managing to cram every little detail from both the official Bethesda lore and from Michael Kirkbride's creator-fiction (some people call it ramblings, but whatever). tl;dr: the mod is legal, the lore is half-official, half-unofficial. Link to the image section of the Dragon Age mod.

It's a mix of previous established official lore and headcannon (cannon, get it? ) in order to justify Tevinter military might in the campaign and battle maps (except cannons are replaced with mages in the description Thanks for the explanation. I just thought it strange that they said the ships were developed during the elf war, which was around 1800 years in the past, when they could have said they were developed during wars with the Qunari which has been on-going for the last 300 years or so and thus would represent up to date modern technology, particularly as many engagements between the two nations have been on the water. Why introduce a totally new piece of (inaccurate) lore when you have perfectly good lore available to justify this type of ship. Oh well. I do think it is interesting that they have developed this mod using Dragon Age lore and it is fascinating to see how they have depicted those nations' military for whom we didn't previously have images.

Never liked CK2. Too many buttons and features, no battles whatsoever. I always like RTW and M2TW. The perfect mix of strategy and tactics. Other way round for me. Didn't like the battles in any of the TW games; too slow. My favorite part of M2TW was the dynastic aspect, and CK2 is all about that. Not sure DA strikes me as a compelling setting for a strategy game either way, but the work put into this (and for a franchise not even remotely as popular as TLotR or ASoIaF at that) is impressive nevertheless.
