So here's a thing. Anthem is the first BioWare game in 16 years (since KOTOR) to not be rated 'Mature'. A 'Teen' certification (12 in Europe, 13 in the US) and likely less with some parental leeway is a bit of a change. So not only will some sons and daughters be potentially playing as well as their fathers and mothers, there's a younger audience that's being introduced to BioWare in any event. What does this mean for the players, for BioWare, and for a more age-mixed online community? If you are sharing this game with your son or daughter, please share your plans. If you are a younger player, it would be fascinating to read your view also.

Not true, SofaJockey. Star Wars: The Old Republic is rated Teen and it came out at the end of 2011.

It means we won't get this satisfying feeling that we get in ME3MP when ripping the head off of a Phantom with a well placed Javelin shot (the sniper rifle not the suit). Honestly I wish they had a bit more violence in it like ME3MP had and it would still be okay for younger audiences in my opinion. But that topic is always controversial, for example I'd never let my child play american war propaganda crap like Call of Duty even if they were shooting kittens instead of bullets but I'd have no problem letting it play Doom.

My brain stopped at "shooting kittens" and screamed "how is that better than shooting Nazis?!?" until I realized you were speaking of kittens as ammunition. According to the Geneva Convention using infant felines as ammunition is a war crime. On topic: it will be interesting to interact with younger people online. I got a shock playing Sea of Thieves as many of my crew were in the 12-14 age range it seemed. Thus I had to temper my language a bit. But I didn't notice anything awful about it. Sure youth get a bad rap as being loud angry shits online, but I think as with many things it's probably a loud minority. I look forward especially to teams of parents and kids, as they always seem to be fun when I've encountered them.

Both of them are under 14 and have been playing multiplayer games for a while now with their friends. Lately, they have usually been switching between Warframe, Fortnite, Roblox, and Battlefront II but both have recently downloaded Apex Legends so we'll see if that catches on. I'll at least make sure they are not little jackasses

Well I bought the LOD version for my son as a B-day present, sooo...yeah. This is nothing new for us. He did his 1st ME trilogy playthrough at age 11 and DA not long after that. I probably would have let him play something like Anthem at 7 or 8.

He does eventually end up playing the games I finish but then there are the ones he asks for himself ("AC: Origins", "Far Cry 5", "Just Cause 4") that I try to fit into BDays and Holdays.

Yeah, he got indoctrinated by virtue of having watched me play those over and over as he grew older...and wanting to play (but mom kept saying no). After me and her split he came and stayed with me during summers and I overruled her objections. I also had a firm rule that he couldn't play anything that I hadn't screened previously...so he really was kind of limited on his options... Of course he's turning 17 in a couple weeks so he can play whatever the hell he wants now. Games are a great way to connect with your children and maintain an open dialogue. They can also be useful in leveraging good academic performance and behavior.

That last sentence especially...I told both him and his sister that, as long they get straight "A's", participate in sports/extracurricular activities, and help keep up the house and their respective rooms, they can play pretty much whenever. My daughter is only 10 so the content she plays is still restricted but the amount she plays is still dictated by adhering to the rules, which she does pretty well. Luckily, she's having too much fun playing Fortnite and Roblox with her friends that she really hasn't asked for anything else in particular. "Anthem" with it's "Teen" rating is still allowable.

Honestly, I always run into squeaker kids when playing online games like Dark Souls. Which I don't mind because their non-stop yapping is entertaining and a good contrast to me being more serious and planning everything out.

My eldest lad was a bit gutted when I told him I was game-sharing Anthem with his uncle instead..
I feel bad because I just assumed he wouldn't be interested! It works out for me, as my playstation plus has just ran out, so now I can share his uncles, which saves me £50, and he gets Anthem for free!
It would have been nice to play together with my son though.

Its a good thing in my mind being able to engage in an activity as a family it keeps everyone connected rather than ignoring each other playing different games making everyone distant from each other, simply put the more you engage as a family the better off everyone is.

My friends 12 year old is usually being serious and planning things with a bunch of adults running around yapping. As for the main topic I suspect it’s a very tiny group of parents who looks at or cares about the ratings. For me while exploding heads is fun it doesn’t really effect my overall enjoyment of the game, so toss them I guess. And the sex side of adult ratings I’ve found so actively bad and cringe I wish they’d get rid of them and go back to fade to black in all their games.

This is my opinion of this, full stop. I will never play this game, because of this. I have no interest in playing games with any children besides those in my family. I will behave for them, because I love them and that is "our time". When gaming, it is my time. I don't filter, as you may have noticed. Honestly, thanks SofaJockey, I was not aware of this and it closes my book on Anthem. Good to know. Edit: whoa. Reading the thread, and knowing some of the content in MEA.... Your kid I guess :/

Honestly, thanks The Love Jockey, I was not aware of this and it closes my book on Anthem. Good to know. You're welcome. It was only later that the penny dropped that a 'Teen' rating would in fact make Anthem a huge 'family friendly' game and I've seen people talking about playing with their kids which I find quite heart-warming. Perhaps we need to ready BSN for an influx of younger gamers.

Perhaps we need to ready BSN for an influx of younger gamers. Yes.... This has crossed my mind recently as well. Part of the reason LFN was so heavily moderated, even at times over-moderated, was because of the broad appeal of the LucasArts games and many of them not being age-gated. Children were a part of the community, and so the place had to be family friendly. I say this for one reason - LFN was an official forum. This forum is not. You folks can choose how to react to this; if you want family friendly here that will truly be the death knell of the place for many of us. I ask you to discuss this matter very seriously.
