Ben Irving @benirvoAfter 8 amazing years at BioWare I have made the decision to move on and have accepted an exciting opportunity at another gaming company. Since the first time I played Baldurs Gate many many years ago, BioWare was the dream place I always wanted to work. I will forever be grateful to all the people who gave me the chance to work on great products with amazing people. I believe Anthem has a bright future - there is a great team working on it and I look forward to following its progress (and playing it!) from the sidelines. I have really enjoyed interacting with the Anthem community - Streams, Twitter and Reddit. Through the good times and the tough times. You all are in great hands with @darokaz and @untdrew (and have been for some time now). I wish nothing but the best for all of you. Ben. I understand why people were upset with his handling of SW:TOR. Don't really know the extent of how much he was involved with Anthem. He seems like a good person. Those tweet replies are brutal though. I'm kinda curious if the game will even get a producer for it at this point. Jon Warner's off the project (I believe), Mike Gamble is the producer for the next Mass Effect game, and Mark Darrah has likely gone back to Dragon Age. I can't really think of who else would be leading the project. Does Mac Walters still work for BioWare? I know he came on last minute to help out with Andromeda, and that's why I ask.

Jon is still listed as Anthem's Game Director, though I know there was an illness in the family which kept him off social media. Mac is still listed as on BW, though I'm not sure what he's on now.

Twitter replies are quite like Youtube comments. They'd always be brutal - hard to expect much else. But I've never believed that the re-shuffling of the team will be a quick process, so I suspect we'll still hear about changes (departures, new hires or transfers/promotions, whatevs) yet for months to come. Ben appears to have stuck with Anthem till Cataclysm was published - from the looks of it has been deemed a step in the right direction, so the game now has a foothold to continue growing.

Sad to see him go...though this is the first time where I am a pause for thought because, love it or not, he kind of slipped into the producer chair for Anthem. I am hoping that this is not a negative sign, I am optimistic enough to think it is not at least.

Ben was thinking pf leaving a while ago, imo. Maybe the pressure was a tad too much. Regardless, good luck to him.

Now he's making it look like he wasn't that big into the active production of Anthem, in spite of being propped up everywhere, like EA Play, the Cataclysm reveal and the EA Unplugged video. He looked miserable in pretty much every one of those appearance, btw. At least, he seemed so to me. And now he left. This isn't making anyone trust Bioware more.

We already know the sales figures were below expectations for Anthem, so not so much. There's been a lot of high profile people at Bioware leaving since ME3. A bit of a worrying sign Since ME3? 7 years ago? Turnover for a company is normal, regular turnover in senior positions ... not so much. Since ME3 Bioware has lost The Doctors, Aaryn Flynn (all GMs), the creative director for Mass Effect (later returned as GM), the creative director of DA, the lead writer of DA, Karypshyn again (former lead writer for ME), and the lead producer for TOR and Anthem. These are a lot of people responsible for the direction of series and the company.

Do you pay attention to them enough to know if the percentage of senior leadership leaving BioWare over past 7+ years is noticeably greater than any other dev? I'm asking because I wouldn't know about the other devs and their attrition.

Generally you see a few of them come and go but you don't see the people responsible for the direction of the company (GMs) and the people responsible for the creative direction of almost every single one of the company's established franchises (creative directors and lead writers) just leave. I don't know about Japanese companies though, they tend to do things a bit different. As for your chart, Madden's been out for 2 weeks so expect them to overtake Anthem very shortly. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped 15 million copies in their first week such was the anticipated demand, but that was back in 2018. It did better than Anthem. You have a Resident Evil remake, a REMAKE, competing with Anthem. Division 2 also disappointed but still sold better than Anthem. Mortal Kombat ... weirdly enough fighting games were "dead" a few years ago but apparently not lol

I think you're overselling it but, whatever. Guys aren't tethered for life to these jobs especially after a decade plus at the same company. Also, Madden SHOULD overtake Anthem because it's another installment in a popular franchise...much like Mortal Kombat, Kingdom Hearts, and The Division 2. It's the best selling original IP and everything that might overtake are sequels

Their aren't that many of them and they usually aren't on the same life plan. Madden doesn't sell all that much. Maybe 40 million copies over the past 6 years? If Anthem had sold the way it was expected Madden wouldn't touch Anthem. Mortal Kombat was dead a few years ago, they resurrected the series pretty much from the grave[1]. It's not a case of a "successful sequel to a popular franchise". Has Kingdom Hearts 3 really sold that many copies? Kingdom Hearts 2 sold ... not very many million. It's been a fairly weak year so far for games. [1]MK declined after 3 then rebooted itself with 9 before 10 exploded in popularity. Between 3 and 9 maybe a couple of mil sales each.

For a franchise that "doesn't sell all that much" they keep making them. I don't think anyone at EA/BioWare anticipated Anthem would outsell Madden
