So, I've been watching lore videos about Grey Wardens and the Blight, and I got to wondering what your average Warden fortress looks like demographics-wise. IIRC, Duncan (or was it Irving or someone else?) says something about the Wardens being allowed to take one mage from each Circle, but I don't see how that holds up, as in addition to Amell/Surana there's Anders, both from Kinloch Hold, not to mention the metric crap-ton of mage Wardens we see throughout the series. Now, some of those could be former apostates (see: Bethany) or Dalish Keepers (Velanna), but look how many were in Inquisition alone. It's like a whole frikkin fraternity! Am I misremembering completely? Where did they all come from?? When you meet him at Ostagar, Alistair also makes a comment wondering why there aren't many women/dwarves/elves (depending on your character) in the Wardens, but he's also only been a Warden in backwater Ferelden for, like.... six months so I'm not inclined to take his word for it. Nobles tend to take umbrage when you go around conscripting their kids, so I imagine most Wardens are pulled from volunteer/soldier stock (Jory, Carver, Mhairi, Alistair, Oghren....) and criminals of every background (Brosca, Aeducan, Surana/Amell, Tabris, Anders, Daveth, Rainier, Loghain, Duncan himself.....). Then you've got people who're Tainted already and take a chance on the Joining (Mahariel, Carver/Bethany). It doesn't make much of a difference really - we know the Wardens recruit from all races (though we've yet to see a qunari Warden), classes, backgrounds, and genders - but I was just wondering about the spread.

One thing that's always bugged me is Ser Jory's comments on your character if you're anything but a human male I mean dude...ever heard about reading history?! For a knight he's very poorly informed about people like Garahel (same with many others in the series but he just stands out)
same with the 'few women in the Wardens' comments, ehm...Warden-Commander Genevieve anyone? though...I think it's mostly because Wardens are aware of what happens when a woman is caught by the darkspawn (blubbery icky broodmother)
maybe it's so as not to give the darkspawn more ammunition?
as for the one mage rule, I think it's a bit of a stretch...throughout the series we see multiple mages (especially in Inquisition) however in the few instances we don't the rule is true
during Awakening you have access to two mages (three if the Warden is also a mage), Anders disappears shortly after the events of Awakening, and Velanna can similarly disappear or not have been recruited at all. in DA 2 the one time (I believe) we see a Warden mage is during the events of Legacy where we encounter Janeka These days I view it more as 'one mage per X Wardens' for example in Awakening there's a total of six Wardens (seven including the Warden) with two (or three) mages, like I said above it's highly possible to end up with just one or no mages at all. It's likely that countries like Orlais have the ability to recruit more mages due to the sheer size of Orlais itself, the Free Marches is similarly a larger area to cover, plus both countries have multiple Circles

Mage issues: Duncan said to Amell/Surana, they would like more mages, but the Chantry doesn't allow them recruit more from the Circles. Duncan complained, they don't have enough mages, so they're happy with every mage who wants to join.

Duncan complained, they don't have enough mages, so they're happy with every mage who wants to join. Of course they don't, because they don't want any more mages than necessary out from under their control. It's why Ser Whatshername is so bent out of shape when the Al/Anora allows you to recruit Anders. Of course, we also have the statements in DAO about how secular officials have no say in Templar/Chantry business.

A warden keep is basically like Castle Black. A few disgraced nobles, and a lot of peasant conscripts mixed with outlaws.
