Mecia Simon is a bit of a letdown. In-setting, Francesca Findabair is regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world, and while Mecia is lovely she isn't quite that. Even the gwent card art for Francesca is disappointing. She doesn't look beautiful at all, but rather petulant.
That's the problem with ethereal/other-worldly beauty - it isn't real, so is very difficult, if not impossible, to depict visually.
I think LotR managed to pull it off decently with Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, but it definitely isn’t easy. I don’t envy the casting director told to cast someone for “the most beautiful woman in the world” Well, I’ve learned previously to wait for the full presentation of makeup-casting-cinematography before deciding whether a character looks right, so we’ll see how they manage.

Mecia Simon is as good looking as people get (judging by her pictures at least)...

I don't know him at all. Kinda wanted the role for Mark Hamill, but oh well. That's why you don't take rumors for granted.

Ah! Now I know why Cavil Geralt creeps me out. He reminds me of Ed Skrein's mercifully brief portrayal of Daario Naharis. Just, you know, surlier. There's something about a jaw you could cut yourself on combined with sleepy, disinterested eyes and an atrocious wig that makes me feel like I've stepped into a cheap fantasy porn flick. Well, I guess the series did want to be like Game of Thrones?

After MUCH forced delay I have finally watched it!
I'm torn on a verdict. It was much better than I initially expected from a Netflix adaptation. But it was also deeply flawed. And flawed where it NEEDED to be good. They fucked up Brokilon so royally that it kind of ruined it for me. The heart of the relationship between Geralt and Ciri was missing entirely! So the final scene while still giving me the feels is unearned. The context is missing. The emotional impact non existent unless you're a book reader drawing from the memory of the actual source material.
I get why they felt they had to change it but the result was SO bad that I can't forgive it.
All the other changes I can accept. I didn't like some of them but I know they had a very difficult job trying to put a collection of short stories into a cohesive prelude to the actual plot around Ciri. So I guess given the tight budget and only 8 episodes, they did the best they could.
Still, without adapting Brokilon properly, what was the point of starting with the short stories?? World building. OK. But the Ciri scenes were mostly boring and pointless. S1 was mostly about Yennefer. Geralt was more game Geralt than book Geralt. Doesn't talk much. And the short stories were about HIM. Geralt talks A LOT in the novels. He's not nearly as grumpy as he's portrayed in the games or this series here.
I do NOT mind the focus on Yennefer, however. I liked her scenes the best in each episode next to the monster fights. But the short stories are all about understanding Geralt and how he relates to the world and the people he meets. I'm not sure the audience understands him as well as Yennefer at this point.
None of the main characters are misrepresented. It was all just a bit one sided about Yennefer.
Coming back to Brokilon because it REALLY frustrates me. So they couldn't show a middle aged man cuddle with a teenage girl because unfortunately the actress of Ciri is way too old to play a 10 year old innocent child. This is 2020 where everything is offensive and men are all rapists. I wonder if picking a child actress for Brokilon would have been enough to just tell the damn story properly. Probably still a no go these days. But imo they should have just done it. If people see anything sexual in this story they need to see a shrink.
The doppler story they invented instead is a hot mess. Mousesack being there not raising suspicion was also bad. And let's not talk about how the dryads are presented and all the elven lore missing because Geralt wasn't there to talk to Eithne... and how utterly awful the CGI was. Brokilon was a narrative and visual crime.
Fringilla is another low point, so is Cahir unfortunately. These three things were just BAD.
I had no issues with Triss. The actress did fine. I meant Triss is such a minor character in the novels, it's going to be fine either way. The actress won't have to be particularly good to get the job done. Not saying she was bad but her casting is not really relevant imo.
The best support cast is the actress playing Tissaia. Very strong performance. And I love how well the complicated relationship between Tissaia and Yen is presented. Perfect.
I'm sort of indifferent about Dandelion/Jaskier. He's fine although not exactly how I pictured him. I wish there had been more banter. It's such a big part of the novels. So I wasn't entirely satisfied with the bromance simply because there was too lite of it.
Episode 8 was by far the best one. The only one I would actually rate great. And regarding the discussion concerning Vilgefortz: he let Cahir win. It's the only thing that makes sense. He's a snake who pretends to be a good guy while trying to get back into the good graces of Emhyr. He's playing everyone. I totally forgot how well acquainted they were... In fact I have forgotten so much of the novels, it's embarrassing. Most of my gripes with changes were actually due to false or missing memory. The show is for the most part very true to the novels. A lot more than I realized. A friend had to explain to me a lot of the things I had forgotten.
Episode 6 was a mess but I am aware the budget didn't allow them to tell the story properly. Still, did they have to do this to Eycke?? Embarrassing! The episode started off great but got worse and worse. That said, the two bodyguards were perfect and Yarpen was pretty awesome too. Loved the actor they got for him. I'm cool with using midgets as dwarves.
S1 was very uneven to me. Some parts were great, others awkwardly rewritten and some outright bad.
I'll probably give it a 7/10. Could have easily been an 8 or 8.5 if they didn't kill the true heart of it in Brokilon...
I have a good feeling about S2 though. The actual plot of the saga should be easier to adept. No more struggling to combine different timelines. The way they were blending stuff (Brokilon again!!!) for time constraints didn't work out too well imo.
My huge Witcher fan friend LOVES it to bits. He rewatched it several times and each time he liked it better. His wife who's new to the saga loved it as well. My boyfriend who loves the novels and identifies with Geralt a lot didn't like it much. And he hates how Yen looks. His pale beauty of a waifu she is not. I'm somewhere in the middle.
It's crazy and awesome though what a big this show has become. And this proves that they did a good job for a new audience. And that's arguably the most important thing. Sapkowski deserves it. And this is also good news for all older fans. We're getting another Witcher game as a result. So this is a win-win story for everyone.

I watched the show before reading the books, and at some point I'll re-watch it. And yeah, I don't know who thought it was a good idea to blow through two books of material in just eight episodes.
Speaking of Yennefer in the books she is an extremly unlikable person in my opinion, though we the readers only get to view her through a very narrow lens, and are left to analyse the bread crumbs. The books hint at her virtues and to my mind Geralt and Yen at there core are cut from the same cloth, just that Yen is ruthless as hell. I think in Time of Contempt it mentions Yen saving some dwarves during a pogrom in Vengerberg, with the show putting so much focus on her I would've liked to have seen her character fleshed out more.
And yeah, what they did with Geralt and Ciri is a tragedy. Its my biggest gripe because there story is so important, it only drives the plot going forward. Haha.

I'll be watching, whether its good or bad, I'm sure it will be entertaining. Haha. And its probably for the best that Netflix is pretty much doing its own thing at this point, as they kinda half-assed the adaptation of the books in season one. Though I fear game Geralt is with us for good.

I gave up on the books somewhere in book 2, I just didn't like the writing. I played the games before reading the books so had pre-defined ideas about the characters and about what would happen so the books didn't conform to what I expected. That of course is my problem not the writers but so far the TV adaptation has been enjoyable for me and I am enjoying Cavill's Geralt.

I enjoyed season 1 more than I thought I would and from that trailer I am looking forward to season 2 more than I thought I would. See, I'm pretty much the opposite. The fact that I had previous knowledge and a personal connection to the setting and its characters enhanced my enjoyment, and I was more willing to give the books a pass on some of its shortcomings, especially if those shortcomings were addressed at least somewhat in the games. Really I ended up having a great appreciation for the books and a greater appreciation of the games. On one hand as far as a continuation of the story goes the games leave a lot to be desired, but on the other its clear just how much passion the devs had for the source material and the games were much better for it. Though yeah, the books were not what I expected them to be either. I expected a more expansive story (like a Game of Thrones or something), but its more or less a personal story about the life of Witcher Geralt and his child of destiny. Rather amusingly, I was pretty much pro Scoia'tael in the games and in the book Blood of Elves, Yarpen Zigrin is describing the political situation and why he has not joined the Scoia'tael, that Yarpen is a smart man. I basically one eighty'd, and was like, "Yeah, f*** the Scoia'tael!" LOL. You take that back! Game Geralt is an absolute treasure! Hey, I like game Geralt as much as the next person. Just wish he stayed in the games! LOL. Doug Cockle may over do it a bit in TW3, but really the criticism is the simplification of the character, but that pretty much effects all the characters in the games outside of a few.
