Finished the first book about 3 weeks ago. Was absolutely amazing, and it's hilarious too in multiple occasions. Now I just gotta get the others, one by one. It's interesting as always to see how different it is compared to the games/show. For instance In the show after he kills the thugs in Blaviken, Stregobor acts like a cunt. Yet in the books he offers Geralt a ride with him back to Kovir: "the people will not understand what you did, they never do. And you witchers kill in such a horrible way" It's also interesting how the book mentions sorcerers In fact it states that most sorcerers are not that good looking, because most of them are just normal girls with magic aptitudes, often with some deformities and what not, thus they all go through the process of "changing" their appearance via magical procedures, and people with keen eyes like Geralt notice some "imperfections" like he does with Yennefer.

That line from the Last Wish also stuck out for me, though I think it was just Sapkowski maybe somewhat awkwardly hammering home that sorceresses are not generally naturally attractive. Yennefer and others are almost always described as being extremely attractive. Once you read Time of Contempt it will be clear just how much of a fetish Sapkowski had for attractive, promiscuous, witches. Haha. Yeah, Sapkowski can be pretty funny. I just about died after this bit of dark humor. Minor spoilers from Tower of the Swallows below.
Rience: "To think I insisted on going after Ciri, and on Schirri going after the Witcher. Damn it! I'm freezing here and Schirri is probably nice and warm..."
Meanwhile... Schirri is going out like Nic Cage. Wicker Man and all. LOL.

The sections with "peasant talk" are to die for (thank god they did a good job with the translation in spanish, it often sucks, but it's not the case for these books it seems).

The interesting thing that Sapkowski does with certain bits of lore like the sorceresses starting out as ugly, jealous little girls or Witchers having no emotion, is that it's often couched in peasant gossip and not stated as fact, so you as the reader have to make up your mind about it.
On an unrelated note, it's frustrating all the adaptations so far haven't done Jaskier full justice. He's one of my favorite characters in the books. In the series he feels too sanitized and there only for comedic humor. In the games he's not sanitized but very one dimensional. In fact in the books, he's actually addicted to womanizing and has no issue with cheating. He can be quite serious and will take Geralt to task on occasion, especially when he's moping. And he can also be a sympathetic figure who relies on Geralt's protection and friendship. None of this range shows up in the adaptations.

Yes,book Jaskier/Dandelion is really great. I like the stories with him the most. He is a much deeper character in the books.

A question for the book readers...Who's Nigel in the stories and does he have a big part? I just found out Kristofer Hivju (aka Tormund Giantsbane) will be playing him in season two!

Well I just read the books and I don't recall anyone named Nigel. I looked it up, and people seem to think Nigel is Nivellen. Nivellen was a cursed man that Geralt met, in a short story from The Last Wish. I'd imagine he'll be pretty prominent for one episode. Though I kinda thought they skipped over this story, not exactly sure why we're going back to it. It doesn't make sense to include it now, unless Geralt is telling the story to someone, Ciri maybe. Otherwise... But maybe people are wrong, and Nigel is an original character.

It has occurred to me that they might rework the story to take place during the journey to Kaer Morhen or something and incorporate Ciri into it. They may feel the need to further their bond a bit before jumping into the main series proper.

My biggest gripe with the books was that Sapkowski did a lot of telling instead of showing when it came to personal relationships, and the show has already robbed us of Geralt's crappy bedtime stories. For me if the show improves on this, it would be a big factor in whether I enjoy the series.

Don't know who some of those are... yet. More witchers will be cool to see, Coen is a witcher also apparently? never heard of him. Not sure who Vereena is, nor Lydia. Nivellen sounds familiar although not sure why. And do they mean Francesca of Findabar? Anyways, wonder if Mark Hamill will be Vesemir after all. Could be cool. Bad part is that truly this will be airing on 2021. Bummer.

Coen is a witcher also apparently? never heard of him I think Coen was a Witcher who fought in one of the big battles against Nilfgaard. Brugge? Shani met him, I think. Or patched him up, or watched him die? while working as a medic on the front lines. Sorry, can't remember which. I'm not seeing anything in Iakus' post or in what you quoted of it but I'm guessing it's some YouTube thing?

I just find it funny, how very American this 'adaptation' is. In spirit it's more like the cheesy Athena series from the 90s than the books.

But let's be real, where most of the demand for the show is? Western world, de facto America. And who's doing it? It's Netflix after all, I doubt they'll go on searching for eastern european actors/actresses to fill the roles.

I'm not seeing anything in Iakus ' post or in what you quoted of it but I'm guessing it's some YouTube thing? In the books Coen is a witcher from the Cat school who's visiting Kaer Morhen at the same time Triss arrives to find that Ciri is being trained there. I think I remember him being unusually polite and suave for a witcher, and badly pockmarked, and yes, Shani mentions him dying in the Battle of Brenna in the first game. Tue looks good for Eskel. He's handsome and distinctive without looking like a pornstar like Cavil does in that wig, while also looking enough like Cavil to give credence to Triss' thought in the books that if not for Geralt's complexion then they would look like brothers. Don't know if I've ever seen him act, though. Hope they make a point of highlighting his and Geralt's friendship, and how sensitive and open-minded he acts compared to the other witchers. Also hope they keep his scar. Paul Bullion seems a bit out of left field in lieu of the lanky and snide Lambert from the games. I think maaaaybe the books might have described him as big and robust? But the only role I've seen him play was a dependable and loyal and rather taciturn henchman. Nothing like our resident jealous asshole. Mecia Simon is a bit of a letdown. In-setting, Francesca Findabair is regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world, and while Mecia is lovely she isn't quite that. Kristofer Hivju is probably going to be great as Nivellen's "beast" form, but he's nothing like the character's rather plain and weak-boned human shape. That's a bit of a shame. Agnes Bjorn also doesn't strike me as seeming very vampiric. I wonder why they're hiring so many Scandinavian actors. Are we supposed to be substitute Slavs or something?

That's the problem with ethereal/other-worldly beauty - it isn't real, so is very difficult, if not impossible, to depict visually.

I sometimes think the descriptions tend to set our expectations to high. I think Mecia will be fine.
