I am of course going to overthink this and go into unnecessary detail because the wait for Dragon Age 4 is killing me. Ok? OK, here we go.
First, of course, I'm bringing my PC. For my Personal Canon the Inquisitor is Karaas Adaar, Champion Warrior and walking tank.
They (I still can't decide whether my Canon Quizzy is a Cassandra-mancing Male or Sera-mancing Female) recognize that the Conference at the Winter Palace is every bit as much of a battle as the fight for Haven and thus get all of the advice and council from Leliana, Josephine, and Vivienne - the resident experts on the Great Game - as they can get before choosing their team and wading into the viper's nest.
While Leliana and Josephine will of course be coming along as the leaders of two of the branches of the Inquisition, Karaas will not be bringing Vivienne as part of their 'personal entourage'. Above all else, Karaas knows they're a relative newcomer to this whole 'Game' business so they make great pains to be deliberately underestimated, and so leaving Vivienne - former Court Mage of this very Court - behind will seem like a major faux pa. (I know that, per dialogue, everyone was there. What I mean in this instance is that Vivienne was not part of the Inquisitor's Inner Circle that gets introduced on the dancefloor at the Ball - your party.)
So the people I'm looking for are people who will be far more formidable than their appearance and mannerisms suggest - people who do in fact know how to play the Game to some degree but will themselves either be underestimated or seen as errors in judgement by the Court.
First draft pick is the 'Muscle': The Iron Bull. Bringing Bull here is a no-brainer frankly - especially if you've done his personal quest in favor of the Chargers already and ensured his loyalty to you and the Inquisition. Bringing a man who will to all appearances seems like mere Muscle but is in fact a trained spy - likely with contacts of his own outside of the Ben-Hassrath proper - will not only look like inexperience on the Inquisitor's part but allow Bull to be the 'Inquisition's Hissrad' for the evening. "Show the Court the Bull, but be our Hissrad."
Second up is our Magical Support: Dorian Pavus Here is where 5d Chess really sets in. As the Magical 'representative' of sorts, Dorian sends all kinds of interesting messages to the foppish fools of the Orlesian Court. This Qunari Mercenary bringing not only another Qunari with them but a Tevinter Magister? Into the heart of Orlesian Politics? Scandalous. Of course they'll likely respect him somewhat as a noble peer, and he has experience navigating this sort of thing well, though he likely won't enjoy it.
And Finally our Roguish Rep: Lady Mai Balsych of Korse - Red Frickin' Jenny - Sera I considered bringing Varric on, given his own network of Spies and experience with politics from the Dwarven Merchants Guild. In a lot of ways both he and Sera work, but I settled on Sera personally for two reasons - one, she's boorish and silly and will cause the Nobles to further underestimate my Character's own prowess at the Game. But also, she's a Red Jenny. She's got all kinds of help there, eyes and ears everywhere. Not to mention bringing an elf to the Ball as more than a servant?!? Talk about scandal. All the tongues will be wagging and questions will be being asked. Ironically, it's likely her connections in the serving staff will be the non-elves.
So, what do you all think of this crew for Inquisitor Adaar? Who would you bring?

My canon (femal mage Lavellan, Cullen romance) brings the same as you, for pretty much the same reasons. I can see poor Josephine having a mini heart attack when telling her the three picks, before explaining the rational. Bull - acts the bodyguard but is actually a trained spy. Also the one that could probably draw more attention if needed away from my Dalish Inquisitor. Dorian - Quizzy's BFF and if she has to go there and suffer, then so does he Also has experience navigating high noble parties. Sera - seems like the wildcard, and in some ways she is. She has contacts within the Palace via the Red Jennys, and the nobles would probably dismiss her the way they do other elves - which would would help her blend in while in plain sight. Also, being a rogue, she can get into places my Inquisitor couldn't. (I'm sorry, but there's no way it was my clumsy little Lavellan that climbed that trellis. Even if she did manage to start up it without drawing attention - which I highly doubt - she would probably have fallen halfway up and ended up hanging from it by one foot, trying to quietly get Dorian's attention for help, lol. Okay, now I wish I could draw...) And although she doesn't go with here, Vivienne does play a huge part in helping to prep Lavellan for the ball.

If I'm playing an Inquisitor who takes his/her job very seriously, I bring Cassandra, Vivienne and/or the LI.
If I'm playing an Inquisitor who doesn't give a damn and just wants to beat Corypheus, the rest are allowed to come.

You're all putting a whole lot more thought into this than I do. I just stick with whoever I've been bringing everywhere else that playthrough, since I'm aware none of them are going to catastrophically fail at the political game, and I don't want to mess with the line-up that's worked for me when I know there will be fighting.

for my Qunari mage I took Cassandra (his LI), Vivienne and I believe Varric during this playthrough I also used the mod where everyone is at the party but only the ones you selected are in your active party during the fighting bits

I also used the mod where everyone is at the party but only the ones you selected are in your active party during the fighting bits I really don't know why this feature wasn't in the actual game, all the characters act like they attended it anyway, so why couldn't they have been shown at the party? Better yet, what if they'd allowed you to select your companions each time you left the party to enter an combat-investigation area, allowing you to switch things up for each section?

maybe they tried and couldn't make it work? ...and then a modder comes around and goes all "well, if we do this and that we should be able to make it work" but yeah, I agree
that's what often irks me about characters who speak about certain events if they weren't in the active party like...Leliana talking about helping taking down the Archdemon in DA2 if she wasn't in the active party during Origins (or knowing about the Redcliffe tunnel if she wasn't in the party or was never recruited)
or...Jack in ME3 talking about holding up the biotic bubble during the Suicide mission if Samara was the biotic expert (Tali does the same making comments about vents even if Kasumi or Legion was the tech expert)

First things first. To be practical - I take those whome I take everywhre as my team. Period. Though I hate the Orlesians in general, but how others are represented is hilarious. Of course I tried different teams, heard how there are represented. Everyone. From the point of view "Who suits better for exactly Orlesian culture"? Dorian, Bull and Sera of course - just to piss those Orlesions off. Viv knows what is better to do and how behave yourself. Only who cares about her advice. Dorian is a brave man. Nothing to say. Bull? He does not care about them all though his spy skills are suitable sort of (red-haired...yeah). Cass - I adore her how she just yells"get on with it!". She does not get a fuck about that all. Exactly my thoughs: get things done and get the hell out of there. Sera: as usual knows things, hates thos assholes and makes fun of them. After talking about killed simple people. Well done, Sera. Varric - nothing special actually only his hilarious comments as usual. Blackwall: well, we know he does not want to there and actually see no point taking him there at all. Solas? Useles POS. or...Jack in ME3 talking about holding up the biotic bubble during the Suicide mission if Samara was the biotic expert (Tali does the same making comments about vents even if Kasumi or Legion was the tech expert) I always have what has happened. Strange. Jack was an expert - she talks about the bubble, if not - mentions husks. Tali as well. No comment about vents.

Barring differences in Inquisitor preferences and whatnot, my go-to team is: Cassandra, Sera and Vivienne. Vivienne knows better than anyone else what you'll be facing, plus you get more court approval with her around. Sera, for the Red Jenny caches and Cassandra because of her overly long name and status as the Right Hand of the Divine. This goes double if I'm playing an elf, mage or qunari, as Vivienne and Cassandra will be needed to counter all the rampaging bigotry the Inquisitor will face.
If I'm already playing a Warrior, Cassandra can be left out in favor of Dorian.
The Inquisitors who had very few fucks to give and wanted to get away with it would bring Iron Bull, Sera and Solas or Dorian.

A lot of my quizzies tend to bring Cass and Bull. Mostly because they'er both trained in looking out for potential therats in that they both pla yspy like roles for their people and they both can handle themselves in a fight. In terms of mages if I'm not a mage myself then Vivienne usually gets to play mostly again due to her connections with Orlesian nobility. As for rogues usually Varric gets the nod main;ly because he's my favouriet rogue really. I d omix i tup from time to time though as I said it depends on my quizzy

I stick with people who might give the Inquisitor's party some credibility in the setting. Happily, 2/3 of those are part of my normal crew, so it's not a big change for me.
Dorian - a Tevinter noble. He's also keenly intelligent and familiar with such settings, so I figure that he'd offer insightful information during the mission.
Cassandra - a Nevarran noble. She's also the former Right Hand of the Divine, so I figure that her presence gives the Inquisition legitimacy.
Vivienne - an Orlesian court mage, First Enchanter, long term partner to an Orlesian noble. Given her position and experience, I figure she will have the same insightful information as Dorian, but more in line with Orlesian politics.
Vivienne is the odd person out as the non-crew that I bring here. Dorian is my Inquisitor's LI, whom I bring everywhere, and Cassandra is a friend, whom I bring most places, despite the overlap of having two SnS warriors in the party.

Odd...maybe it's something about my game then... Would not be a surpise. You know yourself about bugs all over the place. Once had such: could not land only one planet all of a sudden. Wanted to do Jack LM but just could not land. Tried everything I could, only that planet was the only one I could not land. Met that bug only once though played ME2 do not how many times. After have never met such thing (though met others, in ME3 as well).

I bring Vivienne, Varric and Cassandra.
One mage, one rogue and one warrior.
Vivienne is an expert in The Game. Varric's publications make him popular amongst nobles. Cassandra is also another well known figure of piety and honour in Orlais.

Cassandra is also another well known figure of piety and honour in Orlais. Well, that's what I get for posting mobile. Basically my thoughts. I find Vivienne brings up valid points my "goody-goody" Inquisitior may not consider, and her expertise in "the Game" is invaluable. Worst case, my Inquisitior can keep an eye on her to keep her ambitions in check. Varric has his reputation as a famous author, which acts double-duty as distraction and information; I may be the upstart "Inquisitor", but "ooh, it's Varric Tethras, the famous author!" Cassandra is my favorite, so perhaps I'm biased, but her nobility is worth mentioning, it can open doors and I can sooth her by commiserating about the stupidity of the Game. I swear, after Jaws of Hakkon, I almost want to burn Orlais to the ground. All of it.

What you should have brought some of your friends with you. There were too few Imperial Guards at the party, and the nobles find them pleasantly decorative.

My Jill-of-all-Trades Inquisitor is either too charming for her own good (Dalish Elf) or simply has plenty of experiencing dealing with Orlesians (Qunari; undecided on which character at the moment), so she navigates the ordeal decently well regardless of her chosen companions. She chooses to bring Blackwall (respected Grey Warden, and dance partner), Vivienne (Imperial Court Enchanter, and highly accomplished player of the game), and I choose to bring Cole (simply because I like giving each of my extra party members a major plot event to attend, for variety).

Cullen is my fav romance. I've been giving almost all romances a fair shot though and having completed all Origins, I messed around with the Keep a lot to have different world states while it was operational. I tend to bring somebody I haven't before and whoever makes sense given my scenario. Since I'm planning to do some fighting, I also bring the complimentary classes. If I'm a mage then one of the tanks will be coming too.
