I have avoided doing things that can get my chars to influence rank 20 for ten (?) playthroughs or so. This is of course due to wanting to avoid the rank 20 sound bug. It drove me so mad the first time I heard it that, after learning it was permanent, I deleted the whole playthrough. It's loud, constant and grated extremely on my nerves. As such, for the last many years I have care to max out my rank at lvl 19.
What I am unclear about is if, aside from modding, there is a more "blurry" cutoff line for when the bug starts than just dinging rank 20? Is it when it reaches a specfic number of influence points *past* Rank 20? If so, what quests don't reward influence points? Does killing Cory? Do any of quests after starting Trespasser campaign?

Uh... can you elaborate on this bug? First time hearing of it; I don't know what rank I typically get to in a play.

Rank 20 is the max level, although you can still gain influence points after R20. The rank just doesn't progress past R20. If you do all quests in the game, including DLC's and collections and a few requisitions, you'll usually be at R19 at the end.
The bug consists of playing the rank levelling up-sound (sort of a *fwoomp!* sound) everytime you open and close a menu, looking at the map and changing zones. What makes it special, is that it's permanent for the respective playthrough.
