Just last night I watched a very interesting documentary on the Matel toy company and its creation of HE-Man and the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE toy line, comics and later FILMATION cartoon series. Growing up I had many of the original action figures including He-Man (and Battle Cat), Teela, The Sorceress, Man-At-Arms, RAM-Man, Fisto, Orko, Stratos, Beast-Man, Mer-Man, Evil-Lyn and of course Skeletor (and Panthor). I also had Castle Grayskull and I would spend many hours creating my own stories and adventures and scenerios between the characters as they fought for the protection or power of Castle Grayskull. I even played the Mattel Electronics videogame MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE for the Intellivision (which I have mentioned in a different post), and that was a very difficult game, but it continued the ever-evolving story of Skeletor's conquest to control the powers of the Castle. There were even scenes where the two warriors would enter the Castle, do battle...and upon his victory, HE-Man would then chase Skeletor out of the Castle and away from the surrounding property.
As a child of the 1980s, the character of He-Man was certainly my favourite of all the cartoon characters then and there seemed to be a magic about the show (in particular surrounding the Castle) that always fascinated me. I was greatly disappointed that it only ran for two seasons, but having watched this documentary...I now understand why.
For any BSNer who like me grew up in the 1980s, played with the toys and enjoyed the FILMATION cartoon as much as I did (yes, I admit, I even enjoyed the feminin counterpart, SHE-RA)....If you have not already seen the documentary on Netflix, I highly recommend it. It's not only informative, but also brings back a flood of nostalgia. It even explains the much-maligned 1987 movie (which I can say even as a kid, I am not sure I liked it....because in my mind, the true version of He-Man was the FILMATION cartoon)...But it was an interesting perspective nonetheless into a movie that helped launch Dolph Lundgren's career.
If nothing else....That documentary, called "The Power of GraySkull" brought back some really fond childhood memories.

Who wouldnt love Skeletor As far as characters, I always liked He-Man (and She-Ra ) over Skeletor or Hordak....But Alan Oppenheimer is/was a great voice actor. I can say I liked skeletor (as I got older) because I liked Alan Oppenheimer. Even now looking back, I can appreciate his talent and work.

Funny you should bring this up. I was too old to watch He-Man; wasn't interested in cartoons anymore (yeah, I'm old, like Cthulhu ancient). But a family friend gave us a bag of his old toys recently, and sure enough, both He-Man and Skeletor were in the bag. My boy immediately took a liking to them and absorbed both into his play (after I had checked they weren't collectible) They were the original 80's figures, guns weapons missing of course, but in fairly good nick. Brought back memories from the 80's. Good times.

Brought back memories from the 80's. Good times. That's awesome, Rewind! I spent a considerable amount of time yesterday watching the cartoon on youtube (after watching the documentary the night before), and it brought back so many memories of the original toys. I don't at all care for the 2002 version or the current remake (anime) version that is on Netflix. That isn't He-Man and/or She-Ra at all. Sure there were great shows in the '60s, 70s.....The Johnny Carson Show, The Carrol Burnett Show etc.....But in terms of kids programming, the 1980s was the pinnacle of great shows....and He-Man was probably top among all my favourite shows to watch. Weekdays at 3:30 on FOX 29 (out of Buffalo)....so I would run home, 3 minutes around the corner from my house, as soon as school got out. PS: You can never be "too old" to watch cartoons, or any program from childhood if it brings back good memories. At least, that's my opinion.

Edited my post and changed guns > weapons. I don't know what I was thinking. He-Man's sword is pretty iconic after all. The good old days when you had to be home at a certain time to watch a show. And man was is bad if you were going to miss an episode. I mean sure, your VCR had a timer, but the calendar only went two weeks in to the future, and the pain of using the damn thing! There was hardly any interface; you were pretty much pushing buttons in the dark! Kids these days have it good: Open your preferred smart device, tap Netflix and you're set anytime, anywhere. I was about ten when He-Man was running. I remember that the show felt too childish for me. Never picked it up afterwards, but the show was such a hit back then, that you couldn't miss it in ads and pop culture. And that's why it still brings back memories.

Hey guys; Netflix & Kevin Smitty are making TWO series this year, one of which will be yet ANOTHER attempt to re-boot the classic early 80s animated series, while the other will be "an Epic continuation of the original Filmation TV series" I am cautiously optimistic
