Morning, All. So my existing bootable drive is and M.2- the 512 GB 950 Pro M.2 w/nvme from Samsung-- it was brand new tech in 2016 when I built my current rig. Now....my motherboard is the X-99 Phoenix SLI from Gigabyte, it's been a great board....very versatile, solid, dependable and it was a top-line board when it was released that summer when I bought in back in July of 2016....But the downside , when comparing it to much newer boards that are out nowadays, is that it only has one M.2 slot. After nearly 5 years, it is apporaching its full capacity and so I would like to upgrade to a newer 1 TB 970 M.2 to ensure that I have extra space. Trouble is, with only a single 2280 M-Key slot that is currently occupied.....How would I transfer and clone all my files and OS to a newer 1TB 970 EVO m.2? Is that even possible? I've read that I would need to use an empty x4 PCI-E slot to create a bridge, but I'm not sure how that would work out or even where to purchase the necessary PCIE bridge connector. Not to mention that it would mean incurring an additional cost on top of the price of the 1TB M.2......
So....all things considered, is it worth it? Is it feasible? Would you do it?
My alternative is simply to stick with what I have and create space by uninstalling stuff that I don't use (such as games I haven't played in months) I don't like un-installing games (such the original ME 1, because in the past I have run into all kinds of authentication problems with license keys, or the trouble of having to find old keys.......So once I have a game installed (unless it is on Steam or Origin where it is safe int he Cloud) I prefer not to uninstall it.....But that has been my only choice at the moment.
Advice would be helpful and appreciated.
EDIT: 1:11 pm.....I think I found the solution to my problem! This little dewhickey looks like the answer! (See youtube video below)

Yup, you found the solution. Buy a USB enclosure and clone your OS as usual. You can use your old M.2 drive as a USB storage afterwards.
Alternately you can use an existing SATA drive and clone your OS there first. Then make it bootable and install the new M.2 drive. Then clone the OS again to the M.2. Much more hassle if you ask me.

If my board had more than one M.2 slot I would absolutely use my current 512 as a storage drive as I do my Crucial MX.....But my aging Phoenix SLI has only one 2280-M.2, so this current 512 GB 950 Pro will have to be stored away as a back-up. Ideally though if my motherboard has two M.2 slots I would definitely use the 512 as a storage drive......The downside of still using a board that is approaching 5 years old this summer. But at least I can store it away as a back-up. I'm just glad I found that USB enclosure to clone it, otherwise I would have to start from scratch and do a totally fresh and new install of everything OS and all programs (not fun). To quote Threepio, "this way is much easier."

You would have to use three of these M.2 expansion cards though: And the one in the motherboard... If your PCI slots are in use though then this would not work.

Yuppers....That's the exact board. The retail box is different here in Canada....But that is the exact board.....I'm looking at the pretty orange lights right now, have always liked the orange and white combination. I knew it had a PCI-E card-based M.2 like that one you show above......But I had no idea it could support that many. For a 'true' Nvme M.2 *such as a 2280 socket type like th Samsung 950-980s) I only have the single 2280 slot. Though there is also a U.2 connection which I have never used. But 13.....? Whoa.

Expensive though.
Doubt you need that much storage space though... I however would... Not to mention the expensive state of them... I would need at least 12 TB to clone my current system. I could do 3 4TB but I don't have $600 to spend per drive!
So probably would be locked to 6 2 TB -IF they were less than $100.
