For those of you who kept the romance flag up and waving to the very end kiss before he goes into the Mirror in Trespasser... How do you head cannon a Levellan that is still in love with him that long with absolutely nothing to support your still holding a torch? He leaves without explanation. He sends not one letter or clue about his whereabouts for two years and 2-8 months. How does your Lavellan still love him that much and not feel...well..a little pathetic? Edit to add paraphrased reply reasons: - Levellan was too busy with the Inquisition to do more than just bury her emotions on the matter. They resurfaced full force when she saw him again.
- Due to her position as the Inquisitor, relationships outside of the Inner Circle were impossible.
- Levallan isn't romance centric; she was fine being single, then fine when seeing someone. So, not a big deal that he left? And not the hugest deal that he reappears?
- Solas is that boyfriend you know you shouldn't be seeing but you just can't stop = kinda toxic.
- So many questions being left unanswered carved a space in her mind and heart that remained open. aka I can't compute and I'm stuck on it.
- Lavellan trusts Solas implicitly to have left for good reasons.
- She's been quietly grieving the relationship the entire two years; (tongue in cheek) don't tell my Levellan when it's time to move on!
- Levellan found true happiness with Solas; and Ameridan told her to hang onto all the happiness she could.
- Levellan actually felt like she was over him, did not wait for him, and carried on life per as usual. The intensity of their affair, however, hit her like a frieght train when she saw him again.
- Levellan actually believed she was dying and didn't care about whether or not she was being pathetic before the end.

I can tell you from personal experience that it is grueling to move on. Lavellan may not have been showing that she's pining. After all, the Inquisition still had a crud ton of stuff to do, closing rifts, gathering resources, looking for that freaking 60th elfroot and blood lotus... Moving on from a relationship isn't that different than just functioning like you have before you even had the relationship. That's just it. You're functioning. You're doing stuff. Prioritizing. Working. Resting. Doing whatever keeps you busy and away from thinking about that jagged hole in your heart. But it's always there. Little reminders that pull at the shrapnel, quiet moments that hit you in places others don't see because there's nothing to do about it but keep on marching until it stops one day. As time goes on, you start forgetting the pain. Things start to bring joy back in your life. You can almost laugh again like you used to. And then he comes back into your life. And all of a sudden, it's like you got yanked back to square one and now you've got to hike that long, muted hell back again. Those goddamn questions like,"did he ever care? Does he even spare a thought about me?" He's that addiction you tried clawing away from every frustrating inch.

Well, Lavellan's busy with the Inquisition. I think she can realistically be so caught up with leading the growing organisation that she doesn't have that much time to feel pathetic. Not that she doesn't think about Solas when the pace slows, of course. 2 years does seem like a long time, but I'd say it's not enough to extinguish her feelings for him.

So, are talking realistically here, in real life, if you loved someone that hard and they disappeared? I can definitely get behind a mixed bag of feelings. There was no resolution, so even an elf who got over him would be wound up at seeing him again. But enough to say you'd help end the world? which I think is an option.

I just figured that Lavellan doesn't really have the time to go hunting for boyfriends. The circumstances on her situation - constantly travelling, constantly being scrutinized, busy even when she's just at Skyhold - make it difficult for her to do anything but casually hook up with most people. If she wanted a serious relationship, it'd have to be with someone whom she already spends a lot of time with, which limits her to the Inner Circle, which limits her to precisely three people (Five if your Lavellan's bisexual.) And that assumes none of the Inner Circle have left. Seems realistic to me that she just didn't have the time for it.
Besides, I think it's only pathetic if you're actively looking for a relationship. If you are like my Lavellan, then you're not really searching for love or companionship. My Lavellan didn't "move on" to anyone in those two years - but she also didn't want someone to move onto. She won't turn away love when it takes her by the hand and shoves her bodily into a rift, but she won't really go out of her way to get it either.

Well, yeah it's option, but it's not one I took. Lavellan can still love Solas and nonetheless think his plan is awful. We got the normal stable of "That plan sucks and I'm going to stop you" options as everyone else. It's just that our "That plan is great and I'm going to help you carry it out" option is a bit different.

She's very very busy with the Inquisition (mainly doing DLCs in my case).
She also probably would have moved on if it had been a normal break up, but the entire thing was weird. Who decides to dump you moments after physically altering your face in a way that will alienate you from everyone you have ever known, refuse to give any reason, insist they still love you anyway, then randomly disappear after promising an explanation? All of which is completely at odds with how he acted for the past year. She is both very confused and very angry and can't let go of that without getting some answers.
She's incredibly pissed and not exactly ready to jump back into a relationship with the guy, but she can't just let all that go without an explanation. And she can't really get over him without clearing some of that stuff up.

"A hundred years is a mere blink in the life of an elf. I am patient. I can wait." More seriously though, Lavellan knows Solas. Probably better than anyone else (of the modern people, at least). She knows he wouldn't have left unless he thought he had to. Of course that doesn't make the pain go away, but like others have said she had the Inquisition to keep her busy. I guess the worst part would be not knowing why. Solas promised her that "if we are both alive after the fight (against Corypheus), everything will be made clear." And he did... two years later, anyway. We don't get to choose who we love. Her feelings for Solas have not changed, even if she must now put them aside to save him from himself. "Harden your heart to a cutting edge", like he once advised her. Lavellan understands why Solas thinks he has to do what he's about to do, but at the same time she cannot let him succeed... She has no choice: she must fight against him - either to change his mind - or kill him, if there is no other way.

It is a good question but yes I agree with what others have said already that Lavellan was busy with the Inquisition after the battle. I don't think she would have had the time to search for Solas or search for answers by herself so what else can she do in that situation other than focus on the tasks at hand. But at the same time she definitely didn't forget about him - he was someone who she came to care deeply for and he did leave a big impression on her, both on a romantic level and as an individual. So I think some parts in her still craved answers and closure even after 2 years. As for why she didn't "move on", well, she did not want to - sometimes some people find it easier than others, plus again I think it relates to how strong the bond in the previous relationship was. Even if that sense of wanting him back somewhat faded into the background eventually, here he is again after 2 years and those feelings resume.

There was no resolution, so even an elf who got over him would be wound up at seeing him again. But enough to say you'd help end the world? which I think is an option. I can't speak for anyone else. All I can say is sometimes some people can get so attached to another to the point that it's like a drug relapse. You can spend those two years trying to let go, to be in a better place until you're mentally free for another relationship. So when an old flame who left things ambiguous like that comes back, there can be a spectrum of feelings ranging from a desperate "Please don't leave me" to "ARE YOU FRIGGING KIDDING ME?!" ....yeah, there's no graceful way those feelings are going down. Anybody who's been there knows we're going down in flames. May as well make it epic!

I think the biggest reasoning behind my Lavellan not moving on is out of worry/concern. Their relationship didn't exactly end in any sort of "sensible" manner (as in, it was apparently obvious they both loved each other). I imagine she always tried to find him when able to spare a spy. And knowing that Inky has some of the best when it comes to having those particular resources, and she was never able to find him, she wasn't offered any closure. In short, having someone she loves dearly disappear without a trace was too much for her to just be able to move away from, especially when it was obvious neither wanted the relationship to end.At least, that's what I always imagined.

After the main game she was simply confused and upset, since he had promised he would tell her why he broke things off after Cory was defeated and then he just left. She wondered if it had something to do with the orb, since he seemed very upset about its destruction, but that was about as far as she could get. She still loved him. Since he had always been so supportive of her in her role, and it wasn't the first time he suddenly went off on his own, she assumed there were things he needed to sort through in his mind and just kept hoping he would eventually return. There were things to do, since I decided that logically the Frostback Basin and the Descent would be things that would be done after Cory was out of the way. So that kept her mind focussed on other things.
After Trespasser it was rather different. Seeing him again brought back all her old feelings for him. Now she knows why he left, in a way it is easier for her to understand because at least it is nothing she has done. After all the noble sentiments he expressed in the past she finds it impossible to believe he really wants to go through with his plan. She keeps hoping to find a way to change his mind. That is what keeps her going. The moment she stops believing it is possible will be when she slips into an abyss of despair. She kept the Inquisition going because she wanted to support the Divine in her reforms and also hoped that would keep Solas focussed on what she was doing and make it easier to get his attention than if she was off somewhere else.
And if I'm honest, yes, I do find her a little pathetic in her loyalty and devotion but she was always a gentle, caring individual and she thought Solas was her soul mate. Sometimes people don't make much sense when they are in love. Still if it came to a choice between saving the world or Solas, she would save the world.

Hrm... In my opinion... We ware speaking of emotions her... Feelings. I don't think one simply chooses to stop loving. Someone can choose to move on, not let that emotion be in the way, and still feel it. The feeling may become less over time, or maybe not.
For my Lavellan... She is a grown woman, and she was a mom. Her baby girl died a few years ago and she still loves her baby girl. Loving Solas makes no difference for her. She can still live her life, lead the Inquisition, do all the important stuff. Sure, the nights are often lonely, and she wishes he were there, but she was lonely in the past, so it's just like old times. And she is not completely passive when it comes to Solas, Lelianas people keep their eyes open for him. So if anyone would see him, she would know.
If Lavellan would do nothing but lie in their bed and cry and eat chocolate for 2 years, now that would be pathetic.
But her feelings for Solas belong to her, its not like anybody has the right to tell her what to feel. And she certainly doesn't feel the need to explain herself. She would verbally punch someone if they dared to question her about that.
You remember what Aveline said in DA2?
No one tells you how to mourn. And when someone says, "move on", you take their hand and say "my choice".

I'll be honest. At first I had hoped we could pull an ME2 and romance someone else and then tell him it's over in Trespasser. Sadly you can only break up with him IN Trespasser and by then it's too late.
My headcanon? After he left I always complete all the DLC so my Lavellen was focused on continuing her duty to keep Thedas safe, trying to take her mind off her pain and confusion and let her friends be her rock. The first time she saw those statues in JOH though, her heart broke a little. It was the same statues he had taken her to in Crestwood where he removed her Vallaslin and broke up with her. It ended with Ameridan telling her to hold on to whatever happiness she could find and that's when she decided to wait for Solas to return and knew one day he would.
I actually enjoyed how in Trespasser almost everyone can attempt to comfort you about losing Solas. They felt like real friends!

First time I played it I honestly thought the anchor would kill her and she just wanted to see Solas for one last time... I always play Descend and Jaws of Hakkon before the final battle with Corypheus, mostly because I want to have Solas in my party for as long as possible.

Dorian is a pretty decent replacement for Solas but I do find Solas left to his own devices is the most useful party member. He seems to have a mind of his own and I never have to control him. He knows when to use a barrier, when to revive a fallen friend and he always strikes lighting down on any enemy about to attack me. Him, Blackwall and Cole never let my Inquisitor fall. The best thing about taking Solas with you in JOH is having the guy say he forgot Fen'Harel lol

All too often it can feel lonely when stories are isolated from each other and no one is asking how the player's character is holding up. I do wonder how stories would go if Lavellan had a chance to grow closer to someone else after Solas' departure before Trespasser. Would it diminish the reunion? Would it enhance it with more complicated feelings?

Even if you romance Solas you can still use the Heart option on others so I formed a close "could have been more in another life" relationship between my Lavellan and Cullen and he even looked like he wanted to confess his feelings to her in Trespasser so it kind of worked lol

Two years is a long time. I think my Lavellan does feel a little pathetic.
Sad, confused, angry, pathetic, worried. And determined.
My Lavellan hasn't spent much time consciously processing her emotions since the disaster at the Conclave. She's had to bury them and do what needs to be done. So her subconscious works on them, mostly. She spent the last two years buried in her work (I headcanon that she also continued the quest for Elven lore, which has not been going well). Her myriad of emotions about Solas was distilled into a single point: her efforts to find him.
I think my Lavellan was still in love over those two years because she had so many unanswered questions. She couldn't move on without those answers. When she meets Solas again, she remembers how much she loves him, and when she finds out who he is, things start to make sense. Her feelings soften, and her attitude is, we were wrong, bring us to understanding. However, instead of giving her a measure of peace, now that he has revealed what he is planning...at this point, in her love she is divided. A part of her really, really doesn't want to love him anymore. And another part, the part that proclaimed var lath vir suledin, and really, really meant it...that part can't stop. I think these two opposing parts fight a lot.
Poor thing.

My quizzie didn't stop loving Solas. She was angry and confused about being dumped but eventually realized something more was going on that Solas hadn't told her about. During those 2 years he was gone she worked hard as the inquisitor and maybe had a few flings. She's not a nun! When she saw Solas again the feelings were still there but she was cautious.

So, are talking realistically here, in real life, if you loved someone that hard and they disappeared? I can definitely get behind a mixed bag of feelings. There was no resolution, so even an elf who got over him would be wound up at seeing him again. But enough to say you'd help end the world? which I think is an option. From what I've noticed, most of those who said they chose that option did so for the elves, and not because of love. More seriously though, Lavellan knows Solas. Probably better than anyone else (of the modern people, at least). She knows he wouldn't have left unless he thought he had to. That's a good point, I think so too. My Lavellan understood that Solas must have left because of Reasons; of course she was angry that he didn't tell her what they were, but she knew they must have been something he considered important. I actually enjoyed how in Trespasser almost everyone can attempt to comfort you about losing Solas. They felt like real friends! Yes! That was the exact moment when I warmed up to Blackwall, though I was really disappointed that Cassandra didn't say anything.

I love calling Solas a know-it-all prick I hope is strung up somewhere and Blackwall says something like "right... wound is still raw then" and "you've been spending too much time with Sera" lol Cass thinks I'm getting married to some mystery guy thanks to Varric lol I'm guessing she thinks I've moved on.
