Hi all,
I've been having a weird issue for the past two weeks where my PC boots with a bios screen error. I can ignore it by pressing F1 and just use my PC normally. When I reboot the PC the error is gone. When I turn the PC off but don't cut the power and then reboot it, it's also fine.
Plus, my time is always wrong. It has always been slightly off (about 20min) but since around the time of the latest windows update it's off by many hours.
Now, I've been told that a dead CMOS battery might be the issue? Would the experts of BSN concur?
What else could it be?
My PC is from 2015 btw, so it's aging. My main board is an AsRock Fatal1ty Killer Z97, I think.
I've reset the clock, I've put the time to automatical and summer time adjustment. Everything looks fine.
I always cut the power when I'm done for the day. After setting the time correctly (before it WASN'T, I noticed, that's probably why the time was more and more off as time went by...) it will now reset itself after booting from the totally off time to the correct time.
So I believe the bios error when booting for the first time and the time shenanigans are connected. I read that the bios stores stuff with that battery that can break. Which would explain why things are fine once it got booted for the first time.
I'm a bit of a computer idiot. I did choose all parts myself after research and was proud that it's been running like a charm ever since, but I had a friend assemble everything for me. And I've never in my life put my fingers on the bios. And I'd rather not touch it and break stuff.
I have a computer guy for hardware related stuff. He also added another SSD, something I'm too stupid for too.
If it really must be the battery though, I could probably replace it myself if I can locate it...
Any advice is appreciated!

OK, now that I have looked up what the battery is called I actually checked what the error message said:
"CMOS date/time not set"
Duh.
I had no idea what it meant before. Google is your friend. Nevermind this thread then. Sorry...
Now I just need to find a place that sells it and figure out WHERE on the main board it is.

It's typically one of the little 3v disk, like a CR2032 (probably actually is a CR2032). Edit, found this pic of an ASrock board like you said in your first post... the disk inline with their pointer finger (not the little one right at the tip, that's a capacitor, but the 20mm diameter one).

Yeah I found it, it's behind my GPU, peeking out slightly. I'll remove the GPU and check what model it is. I hope I can get a replacement quickly.
Seems to be a minor issue, except once replaced it looks like I'll have to reset the time in the bios. I was shopping it was a quick swap and nothing more. I'll need to find a guide on how to so that. Total noob here.
Sorry for the pointless thread!

You'll probably lose any other settings there might be as well (default settings for Capslock, boot order, any overclocking things if you've done that, and of course the time/date as you said). You should be able to just pop it out with a thing... pry-thing, last time I had to do this I used a bent plastic-coated paperclip. The other one just pops in. I have the same battery in the remote/key for my car (VW) and it kind of goes in the same way.

OK this sounds more difficult than I thought, losing settings other than the date/time. Crap.
I'll probably call the PC guy on the weekend then. None of my PC savvy friends are close by.
Anyway, thank you for your input. Glad I didn't just yank it out, lol.

You can always go in and take a bunch of pics of what's on each screen, then put them back once the battery is replaced. You can do it! Just kidding, you can totally change it out.

First off, big thumbs up for Scully! That said, I dunnooooo... When I hit F11 to enter the bios it told me to select a hard drive and I didn't even know which of these lines of numbers and letters is the one where my OS is on, so.... O_______o

When I first found out what these numbers and letters ment I was blown away.

What EXACTLY does the first error that you hit the F1 to get by it say?

I'd say it could be the battery. It's worth trying, if it's easy to switch? Because I assume you have already tried to rewrite to the BIOS memory? You set the clock, you said? You had to save then, right? Sometimes, problems like these could be fixed just by re-saving the same BIOS on exit. But I have to admit that was back in the days of Win98.

The error screen looks like this: I haven't done anything yet. I just start with F1 and wait for the clock to update itself. I have NOT reset the clock in the bios yet. I reset it in the windows setting only. For whatever reason F11 doesn't do anything, even though the error screens says otherwise...

F11 would just let you select what boot-device to start with, could be a second/third/fourth drive, CD/DVD, USB, or *cough* floppy disk. You probably don't need to do anything with that, and you'd have to have hit F11 *before* the error message about the clock not being set comes up. At this point (which you probably have already worked through) if you hit F2 or Del you'll end up in the BIOS/CMOS where you can change the time, or you hit F1, and the computer will continue to boot up as normal.

Then boot to Windows and see if it holds. If it does then shut down and wait at least a minute -unplug the PSU. Then replug it in and power on and see if the system now is holding time. Did you have a power outage or power surge recently? That could wipe the motherboard BIOS or damage the CMOS battery.

I'll have a go at setting the time in the bios tomorrow. Been away for an MRI for four hours and starving and tired tonight.

Though if you do get it out and want to know if it is still good at all:
Be careful though. CMOS batteries have a tenacity: If too much electricity/heat or water is applied but alas that is what you get for messing with Lithium.

Nope, setting the time in the bios did not hold. So I guess this means the battery is broken. Sigh. Didn't have any power outage lately afaik. Definitely calling the computer guy now. I hope he's still available. Been a few years...

Luckily you've got a Computer Guy, Nekko. Both the PC Gurus I have known over the years (one of them was nearly a 20 year relationship) have retired. In fact, the guy I mentioned whom I'd known for near 20 years, he moved back home to Ghana. But he was great. No matter the time of day or night, even in it was 2:00 a.m. I cuold call him up and he would come over. Plus he also gave me a lot of licenses for different programs for free, because he worked at a University and would get licenses. He also did a lot of Corporate work for various companies, so he would say "what do you want? Tell me what programs you are interested in and I will get a license for you." In 2006 he gave me a fully license, lifetime usage, full featured version of Adobe PhotoShop CS 6. He also gave me a lifetime license for ANYDVD/BD when that was around in its previous version, as well as CLONEDVD/BD, NERO Ultra, and Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra 7 through 13. He also gave me a "cheat sheet" of sorts of training videos and examples of past years' exams for the Microsoft A+ Certification. He also gave me fully licensed versions of the latest AV software (NOD 32, AVG among others). And he taught me a lot of what I know now about PCs. Then as I said, he moved back home. A few months later, my Dad got connected with a PC guy through someone at his work, and he would also help me out anytime. He had a small store 5 minutes from my house and so I could take my PC to him any time and no matter how much work was involved or what the problem was with my system....The most he ever charged me was 100 dollars cash, never taxed me for anything. Then about five years ago, he retired and closed up shop. Now I'm stuck with diagnosing everything myself and fixing my own problems (with the help of everyone here on the BSN). So, having a PC Guy you can go to is an amazing benefit.

Nope, setting the time in the bios did not hold. So I guess this means the battery is broken. Sigh. Didn't have any power outage lately afaik. Definitely calling the computer guy now. I hope he's still available. Been a few years... At least you now know it is the battery and that computer will keep going even though it is failing. THAT SAID...
Instead of replacing it...
Just give this a go. No more need for the C2032:

PC guy came over out of the blue. It was a different one from the same company that was once owned by a friend of my mom. He was supposed to come next week. But I'm not complaining. He switched the battery, did it while the PC wasn't unplugged. This way no bios reset was needed. Then we unplugged the PSU to make sure it's still fine. It was! He was done in five minutes. Didn't even want any money. Awesome. Had I known it could be done without messing with the bios, I could have done it myself. Next time.
