PC guy came over out of the blue. It was a different one from the same company that was once owned by a friend of my mom. He was supposed to come next week. But I'm not complaining. He switched the battery, did it while the PC wasn't unplugged. This way no bios reset was needed. Then we unplugged the PSU to make sure it's still fine. It was! He was done in five minutes. Didn't even want any money. Awesome. Had I known it could be done without messing with the bios, I could have done it myself. Next time. Sometimes the easiest fix is the hardest to see, especially when you are so wrapped up in it. You try so many things multiple times and nothing seems to work, and you stress out that everything you've tried doesn't work....You have done everything you can, everything you know how to do and nothing seems to work that you often neglect to think of some of the most basic stuff. That happens to me all the time. I mentally run through a trouble-shooting list of the most complex causes and their solutions, often double and triple-checking everything only to find those don't solve the problem. Then in my mentally exhausted, stressed-out state, fretting about what the problem is and how to fix it and why nothing i have tried is working.....I overlook some of the most simple causes and/or fixes. In that case, often a third party is a welcome help. It often takes a fresh pair of eyes and a clear head, someone who has no previous attachment or involvement to come in and look at things objectively. That person can often visually see, or clearly understand the problem and its respective fix right away and be done in 5 minutes. Then of course you feel a mix of foolishness for missing such a simple solution, and relief that the problem is solved and was done so quickly. Glad to hear that your problem is solved. As I mentioned earlier, a trusted PC Guy is a good friend to have....and it is a very nice bonus when they are humble enough not to accept money, just your heart-felt thanks.

Yes, I'm so glad it was so easy even as I feel foolish. And I've always been lucky to have a friend of the family who had a computer shop. Often he'd send his one guy over to take care of any PC issues I've had over the years. Often they'd do it for free on orders of my mom's friend. The usual guy doesn't work there anymore. Not sure if he does freelance stuff on the side now. I was going to call him initially but then decided to call that friend first and ask who might help me and he referred me to the other guy who now runs the shop. All the same to me. I get good service for little to no charge. Thanks for all your help, guys! Thread can be closed now!

Unless you are this guy, under no circumstances whatsoever repeat his procedure yourself. It is incredibly risky, and as someome who works with electricity everyday, you want to minimize every risk you take because each one could be your last. The proper procedure to replace CMOS battery is to power down, unplug, DISCHARGE THE CAPACITOR, then replace battery. Any other way is adding risk, and unless you really know what you're doing it can go badly (and it can still go badly, everyone gets careless sometimes and you never know if there is a hardware fault on the board somewhere.) I am both impressed and YIKES.

I am both impressed and YIKES. Also don't forget to ground yourself to your PC whenever you work on it. If you don't have an anti-static wrist strap to hook up to your PC case, you can just make sure you have one hand holding onto the case the whole time. Replacing the CMOS battery is probably one of the easiest things to do on a PC. It's way easier than replacing a car battery for sure and even someone like me can replace a car battery. Just follow the instructions and it's that simple.

Yes... that static-strap is to protect the electonics though, not you, but ideally we should be protecting both Thanks for adding that, it's an assumption on my part I shouldn't make here.

Oh in that case, you don't have to worry about that. Unless you are opening up something dangerous like a power supply unit or CRT monitor, it's very unlikely that you'll kill yourself working on your PC. Haha.

You do mean you won't kill yourself if you open them up unplugged right? Otherwise... eyes closed poking and prodding the computer while plugged in... *ZAP*

Yup, always turn off the power supply and then unplug your PC before you work on it. If you're talking about things like PSU and CRT, don't do it. Never open these up even when they aren't plugged in. They can electrocute you and even kill you.

My grandmother once got knocked on her ass from touching the stove. She didn't know this, found out later... But when an inspector came he discovered there was a short behind one of the burner dials and it put her right down. 220 Volts, and down she went before she knew what hit her. Luckily it didn't stop her heart.
