I'm curious if there are any games you play specifically because they work well while listening to your own music.
***
Back in the day I loved gathering herbs on my druid in WoW in flightform. Listen to some music, explore a bit in game, and just generally relax. I found shapeshifting and flying (as a bird in flightform) to be a weird kind of zen fun. Also, picking flowers as a bird when you don't have to dismount was a solid bonus. Haven't touched an MMO in a while now though. Kind of the void I'm looking to fill but ideally not with another MMO.
Contrasting that, I'll turn on something a bit more energetic and go run at banshees in ME3MP. There are some auditory tells I listen for in-game so I have it balanced so I can hear both in this particular case.
Puzzle Quest 2. Random ass game, but terrifyingly addictive. I watched a household of guys go from making fun of it to mindlessly absorbed in the space of a weekend. (Firsthand, me being one of them.) It works well with your own music while you endlessly match gems and slay your foes. Careful though, this little game will eat your soul for just one more 4 of a kind.

Crusader Kings 2: I do try and make a YouTube playlist suited for the culture and time I'm playing (or something approximating it if I'm playing a mod).
I never play music when playing any first person viewpoint game, nor generally in RPG's, since being able to hear the actions in game can be important to gameplay and progression. Notable exception to my no out-game music during gameplay, is the three Shadowrun games. There's generally not a great harm to losing sound in those games, and no requirement to differentiate sounds (say sound-only countdown sound near your character).

I used to play Dead or Alive 5/6 with my friends. We would mute the in-game audio and blast EDM in the background. They were such fun party games with mol...I mean 100% legal prescription mood boosting meds.

I almost never play anything else except what the game has to offer, but there were exceptions like F-19 Stealth Fighter and F-15 back in the day on C64. We blasted Top Gun soundtrack and some Queen I think (mainly from Iron Eagle movie) Also to make up for the slow cassette loading time..

I'm currently playing Elite Dangerous with earphones in. There's nothing I need to specifically listen to, and it's good to break up the monotony of space exploration. It also kinda works out that most of the time I play is when everyone else is in bed and don't want to wake them. Also too lazy to pair the earphones to the TV also

I used to do that in WoW when I was farming. Whether it was herbs, old dungeons/raids... any kind of farming, I'd play my own music. Preferably something calmer (funnily enough it was often soundrack from other games or movies).
Rift farming in Diablo III on the other hand was accompanied by quicker/louder music. There was a time where I was obsessively playing Imagine Dragon's "Friction", because it worked so well with it.
Nowadays I pick up my gathering music when I go into farming mode in Genshin Impact. Not as often as I did with WoW, since I adore soundtrack of this game, but still happens.

Since I mostly play story focused games, I rarely listen to anything other than the game audio. A notable exception are the Diablo 3 seasons. When I play those, I mostly listen to podcasts rather than music though. And when I played No Man's Sky back in the day, I also listened to other stuff in the background but it was mostly documentaries on youtube. For example, I made it through this really cool 24 episode piece on the cold war, all while playing nMS.

I like to put music on when playing turn-based strategy games (Civ, Stellaris, etc) since there aren't in-game audio cues you need to hear, the way you do in e.g. sports games or FP shooters.

Yeah I donm't play music wit hmy gamesd as I prefer to see and hear the sights and sounsd of the game I'm playing. I do sometimes listen t omusic while playing one of my older Moto GP games given i tdoesn't reall yhave commentary or anything but other than that I prefer the sight sand sounsd of the games I'm playing.
