Sci fi with aliens, lasers, FTL, and shiny futuristic worlds remind me of the 90s. For some reason I think the first "Mass Effect" looks like it might have been made in the 90s.
The aesthetics of the later "Mass Effect" games seemed more influenced by 2000s space sci fi like "Firefly", Battlestar Galactica", and the J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" movies.
I think of both human spaceflight and robotic space exploration as things that are very "90s".
It seemed like society was more excited for space, the future, and the possibility of alien life in the 90s.

Was the 1990s optimistic?
As someone who was a teen / young adult during that era I thought the mood of the decade was way more cynical than that of the 1980s. I mean, just look at the music from the two decades.
