Mages Maze in Quest for Glory I : So You Want To Be A Hero was the first mini game I can remember playing.
KOTOR had pazaak and pod racing. CDPR even attached a 100 hour fantasy RPG to the first edition of Gwent.
What were some of the first mini games you remember? Out of all of them, which was the best? Any of them stand out for the wrong reasons? Playing dominoes in RDR2 springs to mind for me.

Not sure if they count as minigames per se but I do kind of like the battle arena's in som egames where you jus tfight of fa fwe waves o fenemies lik ethe Armax Arena in the Citadel DLC as Hogwarts Legacy has a coupl ean that's good fun an deven Midnight Suns has one which you can acquire through upgrades for practicing in. I kind of like Quasar in Mass Effect as that's always useful for topping up your creds. Another couple that sprin to mind as being fun were the dice poker in Witcher 1 and more recently the Summoner's court game in Hogwarts Legacy. I never completed the final part of that as Professor Ronen was just too good but I enjoyed it. I d oplan on trying again though because I think it's jus ta case of getting luck yon on eof m yruns t obeat him as I almos tdid in on erun and it is fun to play.

I barely remember much about it, but I tried - and failed - to collect all the cards in Final Fantasy VIII.
I don't think "Cyberspace" from Sega Shadowrun would count as a "minigame," since it's more of a game element in its own right, but it does play like a minigame.

The FF8 card game was my first one and I LOVED it! I think I also liked the one from 9 but not as much.
Gwent is the absolute best one. I even bought the physical cards and played some too. Couldn't really be bothered with the online version though. Too complicated. Thronebreaker was an awesome challenge though.
None card game I played for dozens of hours was Blitzball in FF10. They butchered it in the other one which shall not be named and doesn't really exist...
I enjoyed playing cards and dominos in RDR2 for a bit.
I'm not sure if ME2's probing counts as a minigame but I somehow found it super relaxing because of the music and that scanning sound, lol.
Plenty of meh minigames but I can't think of an example right now.

I know I made the joke about Gwent being the main focus of TW3 in the OP, but it was one that I just couldn't get in to. I know this qualifies as an 'Unpopular Opinion', but I just never saw the appeal. Geralt has no time for this

First I remember playing is probably the slots machines in Pokemon Red. Don't think I played too much but do remember checking it and the prize list out a couple of times. Favorite is probably Karaoke from the Yakuza series, but Koi Koi comes close. Do adore Mahjong but get so addicted to it it kinda messes me up. Like hours passing, my eyes straining but just one more round I'll probably win this time. Don't remember anyone I actively disliked for reason other than I'm a sore loser or had zero interest in learning the mechanics (Gwent and Shogi).

The first mini game I played the crap out of with a friend of mine was Paddle War in Commander Keen 4. So basically Pong. Well, we didn't know any better and we had lot's of fun. My favorite mini games tend to be those that feel like they fit into the world, like it's something, your character would actually do. This is why I actually liked the hacking and override minigames in ME2. It felt like Shepard was really analyzing code/shortcircuiting pins on a circuit board. Mind you, this does not include mining planets, which never felt particularly realistic to me and it gave us those stupid plastic looking planet balls in ME2/3 after the beautiful renderings in ME1. Another positive example on the other hand are the mini games in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. It may not haev been the best SC game but the safe cracking or the mine building mini games really felt like this is what Sam actually does with his high tech tools. Deus Ex: Human Revolution also had a fantastic hacking minigame but it was almost too intricate already. And of course, I also kinda like some of the more "just for fun" mini games like Gwent or swoop racing but only if not overdosed. I thought the dice game in AC: Valhalla was nice as well. What I do not like are chance based mini games, especially when they are mandatory or give you a big advantage (like lot's of money) so you feel obligated to do them. Candidates are Pazaak (however you spell that) from KotOR and all the dice games in Witcher 1/2. I always just end up save scumming them. I'd also include Quasar but fortunately, that thing givves you so little money in a game where you are monopoly man after a while anyway that it doesn't matter. Also not a big fan of arena tournaments. BioWare puts these into almost all their games and I almost always find them tedious and boring. Taris in KotOR, the one in Jade Empire, ME1's Pinnacle Station DLC, Dragon Ages Proving Grounds, I am kinda always glad when they are over. The one exception here is the Arnax Arsena Arena in ME3 because it had such a fun progression with the modifiers, different tiered rewards and most importantly those ridiculous little fan mail stories. That was kinda fun.

I know this qualifies as an 'Unpopular Opinion', but I just never saw the appeal. Geralt has no time for this I never understood the appeal of Gwent, either. I tried to like it, but every time I tried to play, I found it so boring. ---- For another potentially unpopular opinion, I enjoyed the Towers of Hanoi minigame in ME1. I hated the hacking one, though. I don't know why console players got a memory game/QTE version, and PC players had to put up with this BS: GrossI have a mod that allows you to bypass those with 0 omnigel. Good riddance, circular Frogger. I don't mind the ME2 versions, though. Sometimes I use an insta-win mod for those, and other times I go ahead and play them. As for the first minigames I remember...probably some in Oregon Trail? I remember the original green screen version had a hunting minigame, then Oregon Trail II had hunting, fishing, and that horrendous river rafting one that I attempted only once before making sure I always had enough money to pay the tolls to bypass it. Either Oregon Trail II or Amazon Trail had a glitch in the fishing game where you could click outside the game window, and all the fish would freeze in place so you could just click on one for a guaranteed catch.

One I am actually a little ashamed to admit that I like (or two, actually, from one game)…the cairn stones and Orlog from AC: Valhalla. Orlog, in particular.
I am making a point of going to each player I come across in my current Valhalla run.

Gwent is definitely an improvement on the *cough* card collection mini game in the Witcher 1.
Also, there's a pretty cool side quest in a tournament if you have a good enough deck to enter.

Is that the one at the Passiflora? I've seen the quest, but never actually played it. Is there more to it than 'win the tournament'? IIRC, there was some intrigue going on during the tournament that Geralt needed to get behind but I don't quite remember the specifics.
The problem with Gwent in Witcher 3 was that pretty quickly in devolved into just playing as many spies as possible and using decoys to get back spies played by the other side and play them again. That was it. It was by far the most reliable tactic to win and as soon as you had decent deck that was it for every game. It still was a nice distraction every now and then from the usual gameplay, I thought.
Gwent in the online version (and in Thronebreaker) got more complicated, so that tactic didn't work anymore but I never quite got into it. Didn't even finish Thonebreaker, though I did like the game actually but just doing card games all the time is also not my thing.

Gwent is what finally tipped the scale and got me to read the books. I had a whole headcanon for Isengrim Faoiltiarna based on some wiki, and then it turns out he is barely in the books. Haha. Another amusing one was I was so thoroughly convinced that Milva was an elf because you know, Scoia'tael deck, that I briefly had a self created cognitive dissonance, she is an elf dammit! Until reading Baptism of Fire, oh I guess she is human. Haha. Anyway, I like gwent well enough, there are some different strategies you can play around with, but it is pretty basic. What I like is seeing all the characters from the books and collecting there cards. Team Geralt!

Caravan in Fallout New Vegas. Imho it has a Gwent feel to it. It's probably split 50/50 between chance and skill? As with Gwent, it has you collecting cards all over the game world and interactions with a lot of different NPCs.
It also fits in the lore nicely, being described as too skill based to be allowed in the casinos in Vegas.
