Dating myself, 1981, Dungeon - a mainframe computer only, input via terminal with command line, to move or look.
Zero graphics or sound. Hand drawn maps based upon what the mainframe spat back to you after your entry on the command line. (Our map was about 10 feet by 10 feet on a wall in the computer lab.)
The university began restricting access due to its popularity.
Many fond memories..

sjsharp2010 Ahaha! I vaguely remember that one! Also Sensible Soccer was another classic! Yeah I remembe rSensible Soccer tha twas a hard one I struggled against the AI of that game. I always found Striker a little more forgiving. Shows how far football games have come though. Even if yo ucompare the first EA Fifa game to the last thre's quite a difference. Fifa Internatoinal Soccer EA's first Fifa game. EA's last Fifa 23

Commander Keen and A-10 Warthog were the very first aside from retro arcade games. (Pong, Space Invaders, etc.)
But the '94 Sega Star Trek: TNG game, Civ/Civ2, Goldeneye/Perfect Dark, Zelda: OfT, and Xwing vs Tie Fighter were all pretty formative.

Just to follow up on my original post, I did have a Spectrum before the Megadrive but no games really stood out for me (I think I must've been about 5 at the time). There are only two games that I can remember playing on this system. The first was game called Dizzy which was a platform game and the only thing that I remember is that the lead character was an egg with red gloves on. That's all I can remember (no plot or story, just that it was an egg), anyway it must've left an impression on me as a kid for me to still remember. There was a second game and I don't know the name of it. It was based in an office and you could go round speaking to co-workers (and they all more or less said the same thing). There was one NPC that said something different though when interacting. You could ask about the weather and then afterwards you had the option to fire this person. The NPC would then say something like "you can't fire me, I'm the boss" . It's strange how some games get stuck in your head! I don't even know what the purpose of the game was or how to complete it. My mother used to enjoy playing columns on the Megadrive. She would pause it just before the column dropped in order to plan where to move it. She was so happy when she got to the higher levels even though she was cheating (kind of, she was exploiting the pause)

Red Alert (1996)
It made me very interested in WW2 and the Cold War as well as any games set in that era.

We had an Atari when I was really young, and the games I remember playing with it are Super Mario Bros and Contra. At the time, I also played a lot of old console games on PC through an emulator. But the first PC game I played, not long after, and the one that really got me into the hobby, was Age of Empires 2. I believe second and third were Empire Earth and Pharaoh, so a strategy- and history-heavy start to my gaming career. Do you mean regular Mario Bros? As I recall, SMB was never available for the Atari. Anyway, I was born in 1977, and I'm not sure I can remember an existence without video games at all. I don't know which Atari game would have been my first - maybe Combat or Breakout. I would probably name Fallout 3 as the game that got me into more modern narrative-driven games and turned it into a serious hobby as opposed to just an occasional distraction.

Do you mean regular Mario Bros? As I recall, SMB was never available for the Atari. It was definitely Super Mario Bros. As to the console, everyone in my family called it an Atari, though perhaps it was in the same way that some people call any video game "playing Nintendo." I never played with consoles again after getting a PC, so honestly I don't know much about them.
