I have heard a lot of harshly mixed reviews and even some downright negative reviews about STARFIELD. When I watch the trailer...I get SERIOUS Mass Effect vibes. ALso, maybe some HALO. But it looks mostly like a very modern MASS EFFECT. But most everything I have read or watched is quite negative. What's it like....really? You have to understand since Morrowind every new Bethesda game has been heavily criticized. When Morrowind was released fans thought it was several step backwards. When Oblivion released fans thought it was several steps backwards and that Morrowind was the best game. When Fallout 3 released it was considered Oblivion with guns and Oblivion was better. When Skyrim released it was considered several steps backwards and Oblivion and Fallout 3 were better. When Fallout 4 released it was thought that it was several steps backwards and Skyrim was better. As you can see with each new release they have always been considered inferior to the previous game. Personally I enjoyed Starfield. I enjoyed the faction questlines and main companions. It's a step up to Skyrim both faction wise and companion wise. EDIT: I want to point out beforehand I'm not dunking on Starfield. In my opinion there's a reason why Starfield didn't push the envelope like games from Rockstar does. Bethesda has 400ish employees. Congrats, that's a Larian sized studio. Rockstar has about 5000 employees. This isn't 2010, a AAA game is EXPENSIVE. Do I expect Bethesda, with that small a workforce, to put out something like RDR2 or what's going to come out with GTA6? No. GTA 6 is reportedly costing 2 billion dollars. I don't think Bethesda has the size to compete at the forefront of AAA anymore, and I think a lot of the disappointment comes from people not understanding that Bethesda just isn't a very big studio. By the time Skyrim came out everybody was heavily praising Bethesda. The complaints after Oblivion released was because that was the point Bethesda shed the hardcore RPG audience for a more mainstream audience and even though their forums blew up for about a year, they were largely successful. Fallout 3 had complaints from the hardcore Fallout 1/2 crowd. The complaints this time around is the very opposite. Whereas previous complaints were from the hardcore crowd bemoaning a more mainstream development focus, this time it's from a lot of normal people bemoaning the lack of forward progress in Bethesda's design iterations. This time the hardcore Beth fans are happy, but the people who sometimes play Beth games are unhappier. In my (uneducated) opinion, this is a much more serious dissatisfaction with Beth games. Personally I think Starfield is fine. Beth never used to put out just fine though, they were at the cutting edge of open world design. I'm not saying Starfield is a bad game, but trying to paint this as business as usual for Bethesda is, I think, a little disingenuous. They are threatening to be left behind for ES6, because companies like Fromsoft, Rockstar, and the people behind Zelda. When Skyrim came out on the other hand, everyone wanted to copy Skyrim. That's the difference. Do people think there's going to be a bunch of Starfield clones coming out in a few years? Because we saw a bunch of Soullikes this year...

river82 I know what you mean I was just saying there is a tendency for the divided Bethesda fanbase to bash what's new and prop up what came before despite it being bashed upon release as well. I recently started playing Fallout 4 again and remember when the game released it was dragged along the ground. Now when you look at recent customer reviews they say Fallout 4 is better than Starfield. Again I understand everything you said it's just in my opinion it's the same old cycle all over again. I have never see any Bethesda game universally well received there games have always been divisive. Don't get me started on the division within the Fallout fanbase between who makes a better FO game Bethesda or Obsidian?

But it looks mostly like a very modern MASS EFFECT. But most everything I have read or watched is quite negative. What's it like....really? It's nothing like Mass Effect. As somebody who rates Starfield a 6/10 at best and the biggest disappointment in a decade, I have few good things to say about it. And I used to be a big Bethesda fan, not all hardcore fans love this game. I'm in the minority here though so make of my opinion what you will. I'm disappointed because it's NOT like previous Bethesda games in many ways because it doesn't have the one thing they used to do better than everyone else: exploration and environmental storytelling. It's basically non existent when you go for proc gen planets with just a few copy paste points of interest on every planet. NMS has the same issue but at least NMS lets you fly everywhere and feel truly free. NMS was made by like 11 people. What's Bethesda's excuse? Playing Starfield in between BG3 and Cyberpunk has made their storytelling and also world building shortcomings shockingly obvious. Companions are nothing like in Mass Effect, very boring. Almost no banter. No humor. The main story pissed me off, I thought it was awful. Aside from the touching the magic vision thingy opening it doesn't have much in common with Mass Effect either. The only similarly is the boring exploration of copy paste structures like in ME1. If you don't mind subpart storytelling and enjoy just building your character and playing a pirate or an smuggler or corporate goon, building spaceships and just running and gunning while scanning flora and fauna, the game can be fun. The faction quests are actually decent enough, for Bethesda. It's not a bad game, just painfully mediocre to me. So many game mechanics feel half finished. As if they ran out of time or money. So I'm one of those people disappointed that Bethesda doesn't seem willing to step up their game like the rest of the industry has since Skyrim. Everything feels so outdated. The quest design, the awful NPC animations. The endless loading screens. It's just not up to snuff anymore imo. To me Bethesda seems creatively dead, much like BioWare. And unless they change I won't be buying another of their games. They care more about nuking the modding community once again with a new Skyrim update for their greedy Creation Club than improving Starfield and I'm finally fed up tbh. So yeah, I'm a very disappointed former Bethesda fan. FO76 is a better game to me than Starfield. But check out gameplay and decide for yourself if it's something you might enjoy.

Morning, Kappa. I apprciate your honesty in your review, telling me what you thought wad good, what wasn't, what was 'similar to...." and what was horrible etc. I've taken in what you siad and I will try to watch some vids today, but even without it...I think I will say "hard pass". I'll continue to wait for Forbidden West and STAR WARS Outlaws (which I've heard is coming out sometime between August and October 2024).
Thanks though. Hope you enjoy your day today and ring in the new year among family/ffriends.

We live in an age where companies sell unfinished games and sell the rest as dlc. I agree with Kappa Neko the exploration is non-existant in the game. I mainly stay in the cities which are huge. Bigger than anything in Skyrim.

I agree with Kappa Neko the exploration is non-existant in the game. I mainly stay in the cities which are huge. Bigger than anything in Skyrim. I agree. I would recommend anybody on the fence or anyone period to wait for the game to be content complete and THEN decide if it's worth your money and time. It's possible Bethesda pulls a Cyberpunk overhaul but I highly doubt it. The game isn't fixable to me because I find the writing and world design boring. But that's just me. Cyberpunk always had a great story. They improved the gameplay. Starfield doesn't really need to improve gunplay for example. It's fine. I would consider revisiting the game if they revamped outposts big time and good mods get released. But even then I'd rather return to FO4, a world I just love, where I have total creative freedom. But in general, the longer you wait the better experience you get for a better price tag too. There are no downsides to holding off for a year or longer. That's even true for games like BG3. The patching process has been screwing over a friend's savefiles big time. Every patch something else is broken. They have added a better epilogue I haven't seen yet. Maybe there will be a DLC. Unless I am so stoked or so desperate for a new game I cannot wait I buy complete editions on sale. It's really frustrating how unfinished and unpolished a lot of games release these days. Especially big titles.

I am looking forward to: - Outcast 2: Loved the first one! - PC port of Horizon: Forbidden West: Loved the first one! Been impatiently waiting for the PC port since the PS5 version came out. - Star Wars Outlaws: Looked pretty cool in the preview video. - Gothic Remake: Not really sure if it will come out this year though. Will keep an eye on: - Flintlock: Looks kinda promising and interesting - Greedfall 2: I think it's announced? Not sure. Anyway, the first one was kinda cool - Banishers: Cool trailers, nice studio. Let's see how this goes. - Tempest Rising: Demo was cool. Shameless C&C Ripoff but who cares when C&C has been abused to death by EA. - Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred: I did like D4, especially the campaign. We'll see how much they can improve the endgame by then. - Dragon's Dogma 2: Never really got into the first one but I like it in principle. things I'd enjoy but I don't thnik will be out in 2024: - Dragon Age: Dreadwolf of cours. - Squadron 42: Will not be out this year. - Assassin's Creed: Red: Sometimes Ubi does these short term marketing campaign, so who knows. Might even show up by the end of the year. But in any case. There are more than enough leftovers still to play from 2023, so I have plenty to do and we'll have to see how much time I even want to spend on new games. EDIT: Whooops, I read the thread title wrong, thought this was about games net year. Ok, so this year, my personal game of the year is Talos Principle 2. It was just such a perfect package and such an unexpected huge step up from the already great first one. Simply by far the best gaming experience this year. I liked Starfield but it did have a lot of weaknesses and IMO, Bethesda could and should have done more with that team and that budget. Also the post launch support and communication were horrible. I also liked Diablo 4, particularly the campaign but it really fell off in the endgame IMO. Still needs a little TLC before it gets good. I am hopeful though, D3 also needed some time. Jedi Survivor was probably the second best experience when it comes to new releases in 2023 after TP2. Very solid all around. Forspoken was a disappointment overall, alhough it had its moments. Baldur's Gate 3, well, I only played it for 2 hours or so. It didn't quite catch me, but at that point I was also right in the middle of my pre-Starfield Skyrim playthrough and more inclined t Bethesda gaems. So I will get back to BG3 soon and see if it lives up to the crazy candystorm it sparked but for now, I can't say much about it. So Talos Principle 2 it is then.

I would consider revisiting the game if they revamped outposts big time and good mods get released. Starfield mod development has taken a step since xEdit had a release with Starfield support (it's not at 100% support yet) in November. It should have another jump once the CK is released early this year (people on StarfieldMods are saying February). There is already some interesting stuff on the Nexus. Or the start of some interesting stuff.
