For me there are 3 I really enjoyed. In no particular order here are my top four games of the year.
Baldur's Gate 3 (Best fantasy rpg I've played since the Dragon Age games.) Hogwarts Legacy (Never read a Harry Potter book nor saw any of the movies, but I always liked the idea of a Wizard's school.) Cyberpunk 2077 (Yes, I know this game officially released 3 years ago. But I waited until most of the bugs were fixed to finally play.) Starfield (Not as bad as the internet wants us to believe. Is it perfect? No. But I did have fun with it.)
It's worth noting of all the games I listed I only completed Baldur's Gate 3 once. I don't think I am cut out for long games anymore. I get burnt out.

Nothing really stands out for me for this year. The game I have the most time and playthroughs with would be Resident Evil 4 Remake and a lot of the rest blurs together. A lot of the other games I played don't really stand out from one another and I did complete Hogwarts Legacy, but don't feel like going back. I also played Diablo 4, Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, Avatar. I returned Jedi Survivor for it ran poorly on my PC and I never got around to buying Dead Space Remake. A couple of games are missing, but I cannot remember what they were.
The game I want to play the most and struggle to get into award would go to Horizon: Zero Dawn. It would be the winner since it was released on PC.

Starfield: Best sci fi game I've played since the Mass Effect series another game that comes close is Hi Fi Rush: What an imaginative and unique game that was and of course, how could I forget Hogwarts' Legacy?

I can actually do this this year since I managed to play all of two games this year. Well technically just started on the third one. Christmas miracle. Have to give a slight nod to God of War Ragnarok though right now the DLC is raising my eyebrows. But a surprisingly great sequel to the original 2018 game which did improve on it in pretty much every way. Hogwarts Legacy wasn't actually too bad. A bit too grindy in its open world aspects but it was pretty enjoyable playing a Harry Potter RPG and seeing that world fully realized in an original video game.

It's worth noting of all the games I listed I only completed Baldur's Gate 3 once. I don't think I am cut out for long games anymore. I get burnt out. You beat me to it. I was going to make this exact thread today, even down to the ‘doesn’t have to be new this year, just new to you’ point. Repeat behaviour of this nature will result in a ban My new games this year; SteamForspoken Middle Earth: Shadow of War Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Vampire - The Masquerade: Swansong EA AppJedi: Survivor GoGBaldurs Gate 3 Ubisoft ConnectFar Cry 6 Other than Shadow of War, which I struggled through 4 dire hours of, I really enjoyed all the games above. The only one I haven’t completed at least once is Far Cry, which is mostly due to those games being so freakin’ big and BG3 coming out and consuming my gaming life. Has Potential, Must Try HarderAwarded to Forspoken. I really liked this, but it was still a bit of a disappointment. I loved Frey and her dynamic with Cuff. The fake reviews were easy to spot. The “cringe dialogue” from reviewers who had less than 3 hours in the game, and of course, once you filter out those complaining about ‘woke garbage’ because a game dared to have a brown skinned girl as the main character, things became a bit more balanced. The traversal was insanely fun and the world was really interesting, although the ‘open world’ parts needed some work. It made sense narratively for Athia’s countryside to be devoid of pretty much everything except monsters, but it doesn’t make for a great game world. The sheer number of useful and appealing abilities was mind boggling and I loved the visual effects of pretty much all of them. That said, the game was terribly optimised and didn’t look anywhere near good enough for its system requirements. Combat was a chaotic mess. Enjoyable to a point, but not what I’d hoped for. Best Action Game, Best Visuals, Best Digital ActingJedi: Survivor. It was a hungry beast on launch, and finding your way around the map is still way harder than it should be, but this was an improvement over the very good Fallen Order in almost every way possible. Would still like to have a Walk key on keyboard/mouse, but other than that - no notes. Best Game, Best Narrative, Best Voice ActingFar Cry 6. Obviously BG3. The sheer volume of choices to make, that also get recognised at various points. The number of viable builds. The music. The gentle weaving in of references and links to earlier BG games. Karlach. The numerous ways to complete multiple quests or obstacles. Karlach. The story - just enough twists and turns and impending doom to keep you engaged. Karlach. Still don’t love turn based, but hey - it’s D&D. Deal with it. Do not care for a subsection of the community around the game. The ones that believe because one developer with a landslide of advantages propelling it forward was able to achieve something like this, that every developer should be able to with every game they release, regardless of whether or not they also have those advantages at their backs. Those people are why we can’t have nice things. Other than that, BG3 has been one of the very great gaming experiences of my life. I suspect it is one I will come back to again and again.

My games of the year.
As new games, I only played BG3, Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy I believe. If I don't remember playing something new then it was probably not very good. I also got Cyberpunk story DLC and GW2 SoTO expansion which I haven't played yet.
BG3 was the best one, just a top notch game at every levels. I got lots of plans for more PTs too. I really love Starfield, but I'm waiting for next year big patch to return to it. Also, not having to use batch to load mods that I want to use once the CS is released.
Hogwarts Legacy was good, I really liked the combat and the story was ok, but the collecting was meh.

Lost Ark
Genshin
BG3 for me. One of those games where I want to take my time and explore every little bit of it, walk away, think about it, then come back. I can't remember the last time this happened. Honorable mention to Zelda for continuing to help take open world games away from the Ubisoft formula (I know some people love that thing, but I love the open world gameplay in Genshin and Zelda much more).
Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty was a blast, and incredibly immersive. The depth in the open world isn't there for me though. Same with Starfield, a blast to play, I can understand why people like it but I want more from open worlds now. Interested to see how GTA6 takes open world gameplay after their stellar RDR2. How much did GTA6 cost to make? 1-2 billion? They have a lot to live up to.
For smaller games there were so many hits. Rogue Trader looks great, Vampire Survivor, Hi Fi Rush, Stray Gods. So many.

SteamForspoken Middle Earth: Shadow of War Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Vampire - The Masquerade: Swansong I forgot about Swansong! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoyed it. Was it better than Bloodlines? No, but I had a good time with it. Jedi: Survivor. It was a hungry beast on launch, and finding your way around the map is still way harder than it should be, but this was an improvement over the very good Fallen Order in almost every way possible. Would still like to have a Walk key on keyboard/mouse, but other than that - no notes I want to play this game since I enjoyed the first one, but I have heard about the performance issues on PC. BG3 was the best one, just a top notch game at every levels. I got lots of plans for more PTs tooThis is why although I love it I only completed it once. I keep coming up with too many character ideas. But right now I am trying too finish act 2. I just have chronic restartitis.

Baldur's Gate 3 is my game of the year.
Phantom Liberty is the best expansion pack I've ever played.
The biggest disappointment for me has to be Starfield.

Let's see, what have I played this year...Pathfinder: Wrath of the RighteousThis is one of those games which I enjoyed, but find it hard to recommend to others. The breadth and depth of its systems make BG3 look like a kindergarten game. Having said that, the storyline and characters are very good. But it's also a very long game, with big difficulty spikes in certain places (until you get to high level play). It took me ~390 hours to finish, and I wound up absurdly, but enjoyably, OP towards the end (Trickster ftw!). Dragon's Dogma: Dark ArisenFinally got around to playing this one. But... I think I left it too late. I don't feel like it aged well, and I bounced off it after about 19 hours. Nothing really hooked me on this one - the storyline or the characters. I seem to remember inventory management being pretty horrible as well. Unfortunately, this kinda soured me on DD2's announcement. Baldur's Gate I (Enhanced Edition)Ages ago, I had played BGI & II, but forgot 98% of it since then. So I tried my hand at the EE for a while and it was... okay. I put in ~45 hours into it, before setting it aside. It really is a game of its era. StarfieldA good, but not great, game. I think the bones are there though, and in time the modding community will turn it into what it should have been at the start. I did complete a playthrough and dipped a toe into NG+, but will probably hold off another year or two before looking at it again. Cyberpunk 2077Finally got around to this one after their most recent updates and upgrading my PC (with a GTX 4080). No question, the quality is there. Visually - awesome. Characters - decent. Storyline...? That's where I ran into my roadblock. After ~100 hours, I had numerous apartments, a giant wardrobe, cool cars, cool guns, cool bikes, and the whole thing just felt... pointless. Everything I did felt pointless and there were no goals in front of me that motivated me in the slightest. Eventually, I just lost interest and never finished the PT or even touched the DLC. Alan Wake IIExcellent game... for the most part. The environment design was great, as are the characters, the tie-ins with the Control universe, the humor... Combat though - not so great, with some big boss difficulty spikes the game does not prepare you for. And movement in the game is sooo slooow. I was never able to fully adjust to having characters shuffle around like geriatric 90-year-olds. And despite the great-looking environments, it eventually does get tiresome seeing the same places over and over and over. Baldur's Gate 3My Game of the Year I played a lot of Early Access and still enjoyed the final release. In fact, I haven't even finished Chapter 3 yet, as they keep adding to it! I'm in a good place, playthrough-wise, though. So, yeah. I'll keep waiting until they "finish" the game. It'll be interesting to see if BG3's success affects Larian's plans going forward.

BG3 No contest. One of the best games ever released. Waiting to replay when the game is finally patched up and stable again. (A friend has several stuck characters due to patches borking something.)
Runner-up: Cyberpunk. Currently playing for the first time and loving the hell out of the story. Super immersive game. Impressive city design. Faith in CDPR restored.
I played 14 games this year, I think. Most of them indie and AA. Good games but far from GOTY.

Released this year:
Baldur's Gate 3 - However, I dropped any playthroughs in wait for a time of more opportunity to play a more updated version, by end of 2024 or 2025. Begging for an expansion already. Honkai: Star Rail - For better or worse, I have kept up with it daily since launch (besides min/maxing for the minimal endgame), and had fun times at least once a week or two with new modes/quests/events. My only spending being the (pricier) battle passes every update, and the monthly sub for the first few months but not currently; most that's done is help me have a wider roster of built characters to choose between, sooner than full f2pers.
Other top gameplay this year:
Genshin Impact - Did not play much, but I do a little, and I respect the extent this game is going with its world content (Fontaine). Final Fantasy VII: Remake - Haven't finished yet, but I'm relishing in it. I want to do one story playthrough, then buy the game (ahem), then two-ish more completionist/NG+/hard mode playthroughs before I even touch Rebirth.
Notable: Slay the Princess, and watching a friend play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Also regularly played or at least logged in: Another Eden (logins, some story), Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis (regular but casual-ish). Also played but stopped: Final Fantasy IX and XIII. Annoyed I stopped these playthroughs and I MUST return/redo it. I want to complete essentially all FFs before I die (nothing imminent, just my soft bucket list for gaming).

Starfield and it wasn’t even close. Haven’t felt that engaged with a new game since Ender Lillies in 21 and didn’t realise how much I had missed the Bethesda formula. Can’t wait for mods and expansions to really draw out more of that magic.
And yes, I have played most of the big releases this year. Alan Wake 2 is a skip until it gets a physical edition, but that is the only one I have not played. None of them came close to Starfield for me.

I have heard a lot of harshly mixed reviews and even some downright negative reviews about STARFIELD. When I watch the trailer...I get SERIOUS Mass Effect vibes. ALso, maybe some HALO. But it looks mostly like a very modern MASS EFFECT. But most everything I have read or watched is quite negative.
What's it like....really?

I have heard a lot of harshly mixed reviews and even some downright negative reviews about STARFIELD. When I watch the trailer...I get SERIOUS Mass Effect vibes. ALso, maybe some HALO. But it looks mostly like a very modern MASS EFFECT. But most everything I have read or watched is quite negative. What's it like....really? If you love Bethesda games, then Starfield is for you. It's a chill game that allows you to play at your leisure. There's something for everyone if you wanna be a Smuggler, you can be a Smuggler, if you wanna be a NASA explorer there's quests for you there. It's a massive game that can be addicting and relaxing.

There are some similarities to Mass Effect, but it's a lot more wide in term of content/features and follow The Elder Scroll/Fallout formula (and there seems to be a lot people tired of it) moving backward to Daggerall at some levels. It's one of the best written and voice acted BSG game thought, for the main storylines (main and factions) at least. And it actually focus on exploration, unlike Mass Effect. If you expect ME level of inter-personal relationship no the game doesn't have it at that level. There is banter between the main companions on the ship thought. And lots of people burned themselves out on the game.

And lots of people burned themselves out on the game. I will say it’s exploration is a mix of ME1 with procedural points of interest on the non crafted planets. Fun, but it’s not going to have the intricate detail of crafted planets. The richness lies in the faction quests and building, which are both fantastic and have some interesting choices or options. Essentially, if you love Bethesda games and the building of the later Fallout titles and don’t mind the shocking quantity of procedural content them piled on top of it, then you should enjoy Starfield. When the most common criticism is “it’s just another Bethesda game” that really says it all for me. Sit me down, tap that vein, and give me my fix. There’s little that competes with the Bethesda formula.

You have to understand since Morrowind every new Bethesda game has been heavily criticized. When Morrowind was released fans thought it was several step backwards. When Oblivion released fans thought it was several steps backwards and that Morrowind was the best game. When Fallout 3 released it was considered Oblivion with guns and Oblivion was better. When Skyrim released it was considered several steps backwards and Oblivion and Fallout 3 were better. When Fallout 4 released it was thought that it was several steps backwards and Skyrim was better. As you can see with each new release they have always been considered inferior to the previous game. Personally I enjoyed Starfield. I enjoyed the faction questlines and main companions. It's a step up to Skyrim both faction wise and companion wise.
