I'm reading some [probably] lame looking book that I got for free for Kindle. I figure it's a short read and can help me reach my 22 books goal for the year on Goodreads. At least, I hope it's a quick read. Doesn't look like something I'd want to spend too much time reading. Anyway, here it is...

The book above, "Fire and Flint", proved unreadable. I knew it would be light but it was light on consistency with the span of a few pages and heavy on the incredulity. This is not sci-fi so it stretches what I can believe in. More amateur work than anything but without the benefit of an editor. So, on to a sci-fi book - The Cost of Doing Business.

Been listening to The Lost Fleet & The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier series on audible. I believe Iakus recommended these books to me several years ago, and now that I've finally gotten around to 'reading' them I have to say they are a great choice. The tactics explained in how the fleets engage each other is well done, and the political back and forth between characters is very well done. Makes me wish that Mass Effect would have followed suit in it's depiction of humanity and naval tactics. If you like that (and its spinoff series) I'm currently reading the Empire of Bones series by Terry Mixon, which is also a fun space opera

Don't laugh. This is research for a story I'm writing. I'm incredibly disappointed that I'm forced to spend $3.79 for this book. And I mean that. They should be paying me to read. Anyway...

The book above was total garbage. Read for research into a story I'm writing but full of bullshit. I guess if you believe in this stuff it all makes perfect sense. For me? No. Back to "The Cost of Business".

I've watched the movie many times but I never read the book. I love how much more violent things are in the book. By the time the manhunt begins for Rambo he has killed about a dozen people, and later on he pretty much destroys the town. I also enjoy how you really don't know who to root for.

Just finished A Handmaid's Tale. Recommended for those who enjoy dystopian novels. I read this many years ago when I was in this Book of the Month club. Which is to say, I ordered books and my mom paid for them. I was only in my mid-teens. I don't remember being especially enamored with it back then but a re-read might be in order. Loving the show on Hulu.

Sigh... Still bloody waiting for it to get here. Finally! READING Rather a good conclusion book that wrapped up many details. Rather an ambiguous end though... Eh... still good read... though.... IF the stupid robot wouldn't keep falling to pieces I think it may have been better.

Well I finally finished this mammoth novel, 800 pages or so. Rated by some as one of the great English novels and I would not dispute that. Beautifully written and detailed and at the same time utterly maddening. It is yet another story in which the novelist sets out to present us with a heroine and semi hero that we are supposed to love and yet I found the heroine to be unfair and naive and somewhat dishonest, the semi hero was basically a total ass. I really liked some of the other ancillary characters however. Now this must just be me because there have been a number of other books in which most readers loved certain characters and I could not stand them. (A good example of this would be Dave Gaiders novel Asunder in which I hated Rhys and Evangeline.) A number of Dostoevsky novels are similar in which he creates someone that is supposed to be a hero or semi anti hero who you are to feel sorry for and yet I felt nothing but loathing. Middlemarch is certainly worth the read but it is not light reading. Now I have to decide if I should read another Georg Elliot 19th century novel or go back to sci fi for a bit.

Finished the latest of the Kate Daniels series. I practically ate through the series (and others) for the month of August , from #1 to the recent installment. I'm not sure there will be another KD book since her journey has been a difficult and bloody road and she finally created some peace in the recent book (even if there's the potential dark clouds). The Grey Wolf was put out as #1 and Iron and Magic is slated for three in the KD universe. Additionally, there's the Innkeeper and The Edge series. I find this author's creations absorbing, fun and good to read. I also finished the latest of the Mercedes Thompson series and The Alpha and Omega series, both running in the same universe. The common theme of both authors; werewolves, fae, vampires and other mythological creatures though their presentations are different / varied and interesting. I've to say though Ilona Andrew's vampires are fascinating and I like her style of dropping humour in, otherwise, a frightening situation for people who're mostly prey. I definitely agree with her whimsical view that casino operators are vampires.
