It's nice being read to tho', isn't it? That's always been a treat for me. Sometimes it doesn't matter what the book is, it's just being read to and hearing his voice.
Haha, I was just at the beach with some friends and we only brought one book between us. So we took turns reading it. That was really cool actually.
Only, the book we had was "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah and when we reached the chapter "Go Hitler!" I think the other people on the beach who caught just a few sentences of our "conversation" got a very wrong impression of us.
Can recommend that book btw, I am usually not so much into (auto)biographies and such but this is interesting and super funny.

I finished 'The New Magdalen' by Wilkie Collins. Another very good book. Not a lot of twists but some social commentary and decent plot at least at the beginning concerning assuming another persons identity.
I have been a very slow reader most of my life compared to most people I know so I am astounded I have knocked off two 19th century novels in such a short period of time.
I just purchased two John Scalzi novels from kindle (two of three in a trilogy he is writing.) So it is back to sci fi for a few books.

I've read 2 on that list (Eye of the World and Foundation) and have 2 others, Game of Thrones and Dune. I still haven't read the last two Jordan books (the ones written by Sanderson instead). One of these days I will start the series over again and finally find out what happens at the end. My plan was to read AGoT before the TV series started but never got around to it. Foundation I read as part of The Foundation Trilogy in a single volume. Second Foundation blew me away.

I haven't read much of Asimov, will see if can get hold of The Foundation Trilogy as I am always keen to be "blown away" by Sci-Fi books!!!!! I have read the GoT books, will wait for the next one before I re-read them though.

I liked the first Dune but for some reason, the second book lost me pretty quickly. Since it was mentioned, I definitely second reading the Foundation books and not just because they basically spawned scifi space operas as we know them but because the story line of all three books really is fantastic. In terms of how technology is described, you have to be mindful of the time it was written but it doesn't really impact that story that much in the end. I really wish they'd adapt/reimagine this story in some sort of visualized form (movies or a tv series). Just update some of the technobabble (make everything "atomic" into "quantum" or whatever ) but exploring the whole idea of Psyhcohistory and the slow slow fall of a galactic empire in a modern form would be awesome. Otherwise, and going into a similar direction of classic scifi, I am currently (and very slowly, I got to admit) going through the Hyperion books (currently at Endymion). I find the entire world building really fascinating. The storytelling structure through stories, dreams and journals is something to get used to but overall, they are great books and build a wonderful scifi universe. Another candidate for a visual adaptation IMO. I really don't know why people keep making remakes and super hero movies when there is that kind of stuff out there, just waiting to be used.

I really don't know why people keep making remakes and super hero movies when there is that kind of stuff out there, just waiting to be used. This so much!!!!!!! There is an enormous amount of source material that could be adapted for TV shows and Movies, the constant remakes that are rarely as good as the original are jus ridiculous. The only problem is of course that the Dircetor/Producer get the authors intent and stay true to the book. The classic example of a great book being butchered by a film is "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson, that is a fantastic book and the most recent Movie version was just awful and totally not what the book was about.

Steampunk, book 3 of a series: Overrun by enemy forces…
…Rislandia has no hope for survival…
…unless Zaira can pull off a miracle.
The Wyranth army has pressed all the way to Rislandia’s capital. No one’s been able to slow their advance.
Zaira can’t believe how far the war escalated in a few short months. She took her airship to a foreign continent when her country needed her the most, all because the conniving enemy emperor sold her on a pack of lies.
She has no time for regrets. The King needs to be air-lifted to safety. Bombs need to be dropped on the advancing enemy army. Civilians need supplies and food before they die of sickness and starvation.
It’s a lot to ask of one girl.
Can Zaira regain her confidence in her leadership and save the kingdom?

I agree. Dune is a masterpiece. The sequels,.. emmh. I watched the Children of Dune miniseries and found it rather underwhelming/disappointing as a follow-up. If Messiah and Children of Dune is anything like the adaptation was, I don't really think I'd enjoy reading it, because the miniseries left me frequently saying "Wait... what?" every time the plot took a sudden strange turn into a weird little cul-de-sac. The only problem is of course that the Dircetor/Producer get the authors intent and stay true to the book. The classic example of a great book being butchered by a film is "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson, that is a fantastic book and the most recent Movie version was just awful and totally not what the book was about. The alternate ending was (slightly) more faithful to the book.
Apparently Neville coming to a peaceful resolution with the infected and leaving New York after realising he was the monster they feared was seen as "too bleak". So they changed it to a "happier" ending where Nevillle was an ignorant bigot who dies after carrying out a suicide run against the infected with a grenade.
What makes even less sense is that they left in all the scenes showing that the infected clearly were intelligent, as shown in the scene where they lured him into the same exact trap he'd previously used to capture one of them, using one of the store dummies he was "friends" with as bait.

What wait, alternate ending is that on the DVD? I just thought they missed the whole premise of the book in the movie about Neville's internal struggle and essentially forced captivity and his struggle with loneliness. I don't remember the store dummy bit, oh maybe slightly. I thought he was lured by a female who seemed normal and wasn't and that it was triggered by the dog he found and befriended and it dying? Damn will have to read it again!!!!! Re Dune books 2 and 3. I thought they were alright but after that they definitely went a tad strange. Damn just bought the mini-series!!!!

I meant that it was more faithful because the theme of the novel (and reason for the title) was retained in the alternate ending, his realisation that they were intelligent and he was the bad guy for hunting them down.
Because they didn't go the book route of having the woman be a vampire mole, I think that's why they had the scene with Fred the Dummy being used to lure him into a trap, as that sets up the infected as not being as mindless as we were lead to believe. This gets paid off in the alternate ending as Neville realises this, but goes nowhere in the theatrical one and comes across more as a plothole.
The Dune miniseries (both of them) arealright, even if some of the stuff in Children of Dune left me scratching my head because I wasn't as familiar with the source material. Alec Newman is great in it, as is James McAvoy.

Aaah thanks I see what you are saying, thanks for the clarification!!!! I have read all the Dune books but that was literally decades ago, will read the books before I watch the DVD's of the series and again thanks for the heads up as otherwise it'd probably lose me as well.

I have a real problem finding something new in the SF or Fantasy genres to read. I went to a bookshop today to try to find something.
Sam Hawke 'City of Lies', Cristopher Ruocchio, Pierce Brown, N.K. Jemisin and Adrian Tchaikovsky initially caught my eye.
Adrian Tchaikovsky: No, not my cup of tea. Experimental stories based on silly ideas. N.K. Jemisin: Nonsensical SJW-fantasies. All the Hugo awards + the author a New York resident should provide ample warning. Garbage. Pierce Brown: More immature, delusional, sadistic SJW-fantasies about power. Garbage. Cristopher Ruocchio: Looked intriguing enough. Purchased 'Empire of Silence'. Hope it's not a mistake. Sam Hawke: Again looked like a maybe. Purchased 'City of Lies'.
I am reading 'City of Lies' now. Well, a taint of SJW-pandering in this too, but hopefully it doesn't get worse. Otherwise it's not directly pleasantly engaging to read. This is apparently the authors first effort and he fails a bit in the craft. Way too much descriptions of environments and way too much inserted backward looking explanations and accounts of what has happened some other time. It's so much it's almost the only thing there is. Most of it seems irrelevant for the story, but should at least have been woven in gradually, in a more natural manner. In contrast to this, there is not much color or identity to the characters. Sofar. They're remarkably anonymous, bland and grey. And apparently share the same mind? I don't particularly like this book yet, but will plod on and see how it develops. The hinted general plot still seems interesting.

Fantasy wise that's hard to recommend but have you read The Saga of The Exiles by Julian May, its sort of a combo sci-fi and fantasy series with and there it has a companion series that is Sci-Fi called The Galactic Milieu series that converge at one point in the series. Any Robin Hobb book series for fantasy is another recommendation or any Sherri S Tepper boks and of course Neil Gaiman who spans many genres.

My trinity of fantasy authors are Larry Correia, Jim Butcher, and Brandon Sanderson. All of them have written multiple series. I haven't read Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files but they look interesting, they seem like they'd be similar to Terry Brooks The Word and The Void book Iakus have you read that and would it be a fair comparison?

I've read the Word and the Void books (at least until he merged them with the Shanara series). They are similar in that they are both urban fantasy. But the Dresden Files are a mystery series. Harry Dresden in a wizard detective. So in that sense it's more akin to the Iron Druid, Anita Blake, or Alex Verus series or maybe the Hellblazer comics.

Yeah the merged books with Shanara aren't bad but they are a bit "shallow" I only realised recently it has been ages since the last one actually and I cannot find when the next one is to be released. Will put the Dresden books on my list!!!

Will put the Dresden books on my list!!! The Dresden Files was turned into a short-lived TV series - maybe a half season? - several years ago. I was disappointed when it was cancelled since I liked the guy playing Harry (Paul something). I bought several of the books but have yet to read them. (I seem to say that about a lot of books I have. )

Just a word of warning, the first couple of books are generally considered the weakest in the series (there are currently fifteen books out, plus two short story collections and several comic books) Book 3 (Grave Peril) is where things really take off.
