Yoda tried to do it himself. He failed. But he didn't give up. He knew that only the children of Vader could stop the Emperor. He bided his time. Jake Skywalker had no intention of trying to stop Kylo Ren or Snoke. Jake cared more for the sacred jedi texts than he did for his family's, and friends' safety.

I feel sorry for Mark Hammil having to do this role. Such a disappointment. I hope he was paid well, at least. What breaks my heart is those on-camera moments where he's talking to someone about the movies and they bring up his character development and his face just falls apart and he zones out because it's so obviously painful and uncomfortable for him to think about, knowing how many people were disappointed. I don't disagree with anything you're saying. Still though, plenty lapped it up because it appealed to them in a way it didn't to you, and I can at least see what Johnson was trying to do. And in any case I don't think it's worth taking quite so personally. And yeah, pretty sure he was well paid.

There are elements that I do kind of like, like his final encounter with Leia gave me a genuinely positive swell of emotion, but too much was squandered, which isn't helped by the lack of any real student/pupil dynamic with Rey.

Yup. His scenes with R2 were perfect as well, and I truly laughed out loud at the "Reach out for the Force" joke with Rey. The idea that dopey comedy doesn't belong in Star Wars is silly. It always has. I have no doubt that there was the potential for some kickass grumpy and disenchanted Luke mentor moments between those two, better written. But of course she had to also have romantically charged Force skype scenes with Kylo and then both fail to redeem him and immediately show him up in a massive duel, and then turn up to save all the other heroes and demonstrate how infinitely and uniquely awesome she is with the Force in case we'd missed it the first hundred times she showed that. With a timetable as packed as that in the span of a single movie where Finn and Rose also had a random anti-capitalism vandalism rampage scheduled, of course character-building moments with Luke bloody Skywalker were the ones that got the axe.

Yeah, I think Rey getting a cheat code to fast track her skill-up in the Force really hurt the entire trilogy so far. Honestly I think the gross overuse of light sabers is also a problem, but I guess that's another story. The Canto Bight scene is straight cinematic AIDS to me, especially since it totally derails the entire conflict and ultimately served no purpose, with the characters accomplishing LESS on their return. I make no secret of my loathing of Rose and her "romantic" subplot with Finn. I would have been perfectly content with Finn flying down the center of that battering ram death ray, or perhaps the both of them.

The whole scene with Rose "freeing" the poor, abused horse-goats; amid the whole anti-capitalism message that was Canto Bite; also reeked of the rank hypocrisy that can normally be found in hyper-activist PETA members. Great job Rose at letting out those domesticated animals, who will all likely be hunted down and killed for the damage they caused and the potential danger they pose to citizens, while you completely ignore the child slavery happening literally right in front of you.

Finn could have been a Martyr for the Resistance, and could have died a hero. Instead we got a disgusting & cringe-inducing scene where Rose professes her "love" for him. I would have been much more forgiving of the 3rd act without this idiotic narrative decision, considering the "Force-projection" by Jake Skywalker was actually kinda cool IMHO (I am still very skeptical about the reviews of episode 9 BTW)

If they wanted to do a post "Jedi" and "Sith" story like it seemed was the original intent then those things shouldn't have shown up at all tbh, the practitioners that actually still employed them should have been reserved until the tail end of the trilogy.

Though I suppose had Rian made Finn die there and the battering ram still did its thing...or the First Order got in anyways...it would've been the ultimate coup, the final exclamation point to the audience that...well killing yourself isn't a good thing. See Leia's speech to Poe and Patton.
