For winter use last year I tried to add a small 'spike' to the bottom of my stick in the from of a screw so it would dig into snow and ice. It did not last the winter as it broke off. I'd like to figure out to get some kind of small cleat or point for winter walking. I have to think more on a possible solution. Have you tried to forge a steel spike and harden it really good? Heat it up cherry-red and then dump it into vegetable oil, then anneal it by putting into your stove at 250 degree Celsius for half an hour. Depending on the steel you should get a good hardness this way. I do have two professional walking sticks I use whenever I'm hiking in the mountains with a heavy backpack, they have carbide steel spikes, basically the same material cutting tools for lathes to cut steel are made of. I use them hiking on granite and other really hard rocks and they are exceptionally durable. I think the hiking sticks will give out long before the carbide tips do. Maybe you can get your hands on carbide steel pieces from some machine shop or maybe you can repurpose some cutting tools for the very tips. High quality drill bits are also made from carbide steel. Spike cannot be to large as in full spike mode, and the biggest problem is how is it attached to the bottom of the staff which would be a weak point.
Really what i need to do is make a specialized winter walking stick. I'll have to browse around my garage shop to see what might act as a good spike that can be perma attached to a staff

A rubber cane tip works fine for most terrain, and is cheap to replace when it gets worn out. Otherwise a copper pipe end cap looks nicer, but it's also noisier when you end up on hard surfaces, so you might want the cane tip anyway. Or there's this.

I use a copper cap for the bottom, however I do see an improvement, the threaded bit to hold it tight and the thicker threaded part. I assume you just grind it to a point after affixing it. Thanks for posting that. I think that will work.

[snip] This design should work, but a regular carbon steel screw won't last for long. Maybe use tungsten instead?

Otherwise a copper pipe end cap looks nicer, but it's also noisier when you end up on hard surfaces, so you might want the cane tip anyway. Or there's this. I'd do it like that but also cross-rivet it. Meaning horizontally drill through the cap, the wood and the pin and out through the other side. Then take a rod with the same diameter as the hole, put it in a vice and heat one end with a torch until its red hot and beat it with a hammer to create a head. Insert the rod and mark it where it exits on the other side. Cut it off 1 centimeter proud, heat it and beat it flat also securing the cap and the tip to the stick. That's how they used to attach spear tips and club heads to the shafts back in the day, and those had to withstand combat. As for the tip, what if you simply install a big threaded rod in the stick and use tips that screw on it so you can replace it whenever they get worn or lost? You can secure them with Loctite blue. You can make a pointy tip from long bolt nuts with closed solid ends, simply chuck them into your stationary drill, spin them and shape them with diamond files. Should be quick and easy. Also make a couple tips, some really long ones that turn it into a spear club in case you are attacked by zombies or knights. You never know!

This design should work, but a regular carbon steel screw won't last for long. Maybe use tungsten instead? I haven't seen any tungsten threaded rod at Lowes. Softer steels are more likely to bend than chip, which makes field repairs easier with simple tools, or even a rock. It's also easier to make replacement spikes if you need to when the materials are available in every hardware store. You still need to prevent the tip from splitting from impacting the ground constantly, which is what the cane tip and copper cap are for. The threaded rod point is already meant to be screwed in so it can be replaced if you lose it or want to take it out.

That was my bad, I used the wrong term. I don't know where I got the idea that tungsten meant non-corrosive steel. What I meant was 316 Marine Stainless; it should be available, but a rod could be quite expensive. Maybe cut some bolts?

When you get into expensive materials, you might as well buy a titanium hiking pole or two and some replacement tips. And anyone that's needed threaded rod will have some left over, so you might as well use it for something like this.

IDK, in my experience spikes like that tend to wear quite quickly. They get rounded, and become almost useless after that. Marine stainless isn't expensive, maybe $1/bolt.

I haven't seen it before, but I've also never had to look for it. If it's commonly available and inexpensive, then by all means use it. I have about two feet of threaded rod left over from another project, so I'd use it up first. And I'm not worried about the spike dulling. It doesn't need to be needle sharp to get traction where I live, or to penetrate ice. And I've always got the small metal file on my Leatherman if I need to sharpen it.
