I prefer cats, but I totally like dogs too. With cats I do not have to get up super early and take them for a walk, they eat much less, cats are much calmer than dogs, they're much less destructive, they do not drool, they're smaller which creates a ton of other benefits, they're not known to attack people and seriously injure them, cats do not bark, the can deal with not having any company for a while and last but not least they are exceptional mouse killers which is very useful. I used to have a little mouse problem here, especially in my garage. Took my two new cats less than a month to get rid of them all. Oh, and call me crazy but I do NOT like having animals that need to be trained and I'm not interested in having to remind them every day that I'm the leader of the pack. And just for the record: I did have a dog once, but only for 3 weeks. What can I say, while I loved her dearly she was several MAGNITUDES more demanding than any cat. In the end nearly my entire life revolved around my new dog and that just sucked. Totally broke my heart when I gave her away - but I absolutely had to.

I hate to disillusion everyone, but cats like to regurgitate stuff. Gross stuff. And they like to do it in the middle of the floor, especially on carpet. They will also do it on top of your salt shaker. Cats will sharpen their claws on your furniture until it becomes a pile of toothpicks. Cats will hiss and howl at other cats, inside or outside. Cats will look at you while they knock fragile items off of shelves, tables and mantles. Cats will decide to poop or pee outside of their litter box for no discernible reason. Male cats will mark their territory with pee. Cats are not nearly as low maintenance as they are made out to be. But, but, but... Also lol:

Have both cats and dogs, love both, though cats are admittedly more independent... so that's one extra bonus on their favour.

BOTH! I love a cat's snooty behaviour, the fact that they are so independant and fairly easy to to take care of. I think one of my favorite things about a cat is they way they walk around so regal and superior and yet completely lose their cool over a piece of fuzz on the carpet and if you laugh at them, they'll suddenly stop and look around as if they're embarassed, then walk away sniffing. Cat's are hilarious. I love dog's for their friendly, goofiness, the fact that they are loyal, affectionate, protective and just all around great companions. I do have a number of dog breeds I prefer, both large and small, but on the whole a dog ia a dog and they're pretty much all pretty awesome. I just like animals...period. I've had a variety of types of pets over the years and find most to be fun and interesting. There are some types of pets that do take a lot of work and I'm really not interested in having, but on the whole, I think most animals are great.

I prefer cats, but love both. Being a dweller of a small apartment, a cat is better suited for my current lifestyle, but if I ever get the room I'd probably have the both of them. Both make me laugh, especially together, so that's always a plus

Both No way could I choose between the two but I also love my horses, goat, and emu. Two of my horses and my emu have been with me over 20 years and they still have years to go. All that time together builds a strong bond. I love all animals.

I love both, but I've only kept cats because I've usually lived in places that don't allow dogs.
I dog sit occasionally, though. A coworker of mine has the most beautiful labrador retriever that she has me take care of when she goes out of town. He's an absolute lover. He just needs to be pressing against you all the time.

Cats aren't attention seekers. Unlike dogs. We have dogs...You have to wake up every day, walk your dog, make sure it doesn't chew your furniture and sh-t on your bed. You come home from an exhausting day at work and the first thing to happen is a pounce-of-back-breaking-agony landing on your face. Thankfully we also got cats on this world !You give them a bowl of food and potty train them, then that is the last you'll ever need to know. You come home from an exhausting day at work and there is nobody to care, you sit down in your sadness and a kitten comes to boop your face. Dogs are enthusiastic and can get bored easily although a few of mine will play for hours, with toys, all by themselves. Our 5 cats are now 15 to 17 years old and the oldest one is still bouncing off the walls like a kitten. She likes to play trampoline on my body, in the middle of the night. She is also good at "booping" my face...she likes me to stay awake at night. I spend a lot of the night with a blanket over my head because she likes to bat me in the face with her paws.

Shouldn't there only be two options? Having "both" and "other" doesn't really tell anyone which is better.

Cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria! Our cats and dogs love each other and when the dogs are sleeping, they often have a pile of cats draped over them. My 17 year old cat, Calico and my 6 year old dog Mika, chase each other all over the house every day...Calico usually starts it with a good wack to Mika's face.

All that time together builds a strong bond. I love all animals. Emu! Cool! Are they as tempermental as I've heard? What are they like? I've been curious about emus ever since I was kid, they seem really neat. I found Sammy, before he was a year old, running loose near our property and it took me several hours to herd him through our gate. I think you have to hand raise them as newly hatched chicks for them to become tame but I was just so thrilled to have an emu in my life, that I spent a lot of time with him and around him and he let me pet him more and more. Now he follows me all around our 5 acres, like my shadow. When I scratch his head, he closes his eyes. Makes me feel so good that he trusts me totally. Sammy isn't the least bit temperamental but I've heard emus can be so. From what I understand, it's ostriches that can be even more temperamental. We've moved twice since we've owned Sammy and I even had to load him in a horse trailer but I just took my time (hours) getting him used to it and he did fine. You don't want an emu mad at you though because their talons can rip out a person's guts. The key with me getting along with Sammy is that I've always taken my time with him and he trusts me now, much the way I've been with my horses. Here Sammy is with my late goat, Billy Goat (they were best friends)

I've heard you don't want a mad emu coming at you and that they can be quite dangerous, that is so neat you were able to make friends with Sammy! It is such an honor when a wild animal like that shows it trusts you, it doesn't matter what kind, the fact that Sammy's an emu makes it even more impressive though, I would think, considering you didn't hand raise him.

Cats. Not that I don't really enjoy it when I regularly dog-sit for people, but I've had cats for most of my life. The aloofness of cats and their ability to look after themselves for the most part, does make them far easier to care for and less taxing than the constant energy and attention you have to maintain to keep dogs happy. Besides, when it comes to wanting to take frequent naps, having the temptation to jump into empty boxes and being slightly wary around strangers... I probably tick more boxes for cat than I do for human.
