Hi everyone, this is the thread to tell others about things which, if you were to find them in stories, you'd reject as silly, because "that just wouldn't happen", but which are or were, in fact, perfectly true somewhere in real life. What inspired me to this thread and have a good laugh is this: Fact #1: "Fucking" (IPA: ˈfʊkɪŋ) is the name of a village in Austria. It is actually a plausible name, one of a class of many settlement names in the Southern German-speaking areas of Europe ending with "...ing(en)", meaning "the place of the people of [some personal name]". As if that wasn't enough, though... Fact #2: "Fucking Hell" (IPA: ˈfʊkɪŋ 'hɛl) is a German beer brand, derived from the name of the village and "hell" (meaning "light"), indicating a large class of pale light beers, as opposed to the dark opaque ones. It is sold at an online shop I won't link here because that might be interpreted as advertising. Just search for it, it's easy to find. Of course, the beer was named with the wordplay in mind, but it is notable that it was successfully registered as a brand name after a short controversy. The village name is authentic. Edit: Also derived from the real village name is the fictional village of "Bad Fucking" ("Bad", German for "bath", indicating a spa town), featuring in the Austrian movie of the same name, an adapation of the book of the same name by Kurt Palm. So, now tell me of the improbable facts you know of. Attempts to correct misconceptions of "common sense" or "common wisdom" are also welcome.

On Jupiter and Saturn, It Rains Diamonds.
Here's Psalm 46. Interesting Fact: the 46th word from the beginning is Shake, and the 46th from the end is Spear. Sir Francis Bacon approves.

It's so common in Hollywood to cast adults in teen roles, that people frequently end up with a skewed perception of what the right age looks like for a given character.
The casting of Elle Fanning in Maleficent was frequently criticized, since she looked "too young" for the role of Sleeping Beauty, and yet the actress was almost exactly the right age.

The ocean depths are still a very real frontier for science, as we are constantly discovering new species. One example; this guy discovered last year off the Marina Trench. A new species of Jellfish Don't forget the Vampire Squid & Coelecanth either

There is a place somewhere in Africa called "Kundam Kunda" - this literally means "Pussy to the pussies" in Czech.

A tree does make a sound even if no one is around to hear it. How would you know?...Besides, quantum mechanics seems to indicate that some things can be influenced by observation. Presumably the tree is in a forest, which would indicate that there is a high chance of life (squirrels, rabbits, birds etc) being around said tree. If the tree falls, the local wildlife would react to the tree falling in order to not be crushed by it. The ways our eyes see the world is quite interesting (although it is a misnomer as our eyes don't actually "see", but that's not my point at the moment). Our eyes are split in the middle, with the left half seeing the left half of the world, and the right half seeing the right half of the world. Things get even more confusing when you consider that the left portion of our eyes are routed to the right side of our brain, while the right half is routed to the left side (technically to the occipital lobe). Our brain then processes these split images completely eliminating the split images that we are actually seeing.

Not sure if its still there. Its also the most stolen village sign in the whole country, they had to set up a new one a dozen times already I think. There is several other villages with similar names, like Pucking. ''Fucking'' does not mean anything in German though, so it really just a name.

If the tree falls, the local wildlife would react to the tree falling in order to not be crushed by it. ... Ah, but that would mean that someone was there to listen. The original comment was about a tree falling without anyone there to observe. Then the tree would still fall. We do not live in a Bethesda game, where the world on goes on when the PC is present.

We have no evidence that things work differently when there are no human observers, and as I previously stated there would certainly be other forms of life to observe it.

Why wouldn't it? We have no evidence that things work differently when there are no human observers, and as I previously stated there would certainly be other forms of life to observe it. Well, who's to say that some kind of observation isn't sufficient to influence the results? We don't really know, we can only assume. I mean, obviously this is nothing more that pointless philosophizing, on the same level of hypothetical theories regarding the nature of reality - like the idea that we are all living in some kind of a Matrix. It's practically impossible to prove or disprove these kind of theories. Just for the record, there is ways to observe quantum properties of particles so gently they don't immediately jump into a state due to the observer-effect. Really fascinating:

Wait, you don't talk about how a blue/yellow fabric absorbs all the shades of lights (and some radio waves) except the blue/yellow (and some radio waves)?
Radio waves, ultraviolet and stuff. Forgot its name...

Forgot its name... visible light (about 400-720nm) this is best way to represent it www.wou.edu/las/physci/ch462/c-wheel.gifPretty much if anything has a colour it absorbs opposite spectrum colour from the wheel the strongest. So if something has a red colour is absorbs radiation of green light.
